I agree that H & R makes top quality firearms. I got my shotgun in 1972 (my 10th birthday) and it still works like new. On a different note, Hickok 45 channel showed him shooting a smoothbore 12 guage with slugs at 230 yards. I was surprised that he hit the target about 95% of the time. That is a long way, and the target wasn't big. That is versatility.
As a woodsman myself. I must agree with you whole heartedly. I own a number of fire arms that would be useless if I didn't learn the lessons from the past. I ran a gun shop for years and saw the scarcity of ammo once before. So that inspired me to be sure I always had what I needed including reloading supplies. Rifled slugs are rifled to achieve lower friction while traveling down the barrel and to collapse easier when passing through the choke. The rifling imparts no spin on the slug, stability during flight is because of the hollow opening in the rear and weight forward design. - Love your stuff man keep it coming!
I've had a H&R 20 gauge since I was 12. You are right Dave, they are bulletproof. I even used to duck hunt with it back before they outlawed lead for that. I also have a .410 and will eventually add a 12 gauge, but so far I haven't found a used one that was acceptably priced.
Bought a H&R 20gauge shot gun off gunbroker awhile back when you first had a video for one, (real cheap) bought a few adapters to match my rifle rounds. (using the pathfinder discount code). Solid advice Dave!
Another nice thing about the H&R muzzle loader is that you can switch between the #11 and 209 by switching out the nipple on the breech plug. Safety note with the rifle. If it is the type where the breech plug is held in with an o-ring, be carefull with a hang fire. A detonation with the breech open can shoot the breech plug back at you.

Shipping takes quite a long time (`bout 4 weeks priority mail), I also think they are currently understocked due to the impact of the bow in the states and abroad. I work in a smaller outdoor sports store in Sacramento, CA. California being one of the worst when it comes to restrictions on firearms we still have loads of ammo in stock but I do support Dave's belief on the 12 gauge being the best choice for availability and versatility. Everything stock wise is dwarfed by our cases of shotgun shells.
David. Been watching your vids for the last past 4 months and they have changed the way I think about hunting and guns. I live on a farm and have used my H&R single shot 12 gauge to shoot racoons, deer, rabbits and pesky birds trying to get at our crops. Taking it turkey hunting this spring too. I bought the choate survivor stock because of your first video on it. I cut my H&R Topper down to 18.5 inches and it breaks apart and fits in my pack very easily. I'm not a fan of inline muzzle loaders. Infact I go so far to say that they aren't even in the same class as traditional and shouldn't be considered the same type of weapon. However this H&R is a very beautiful blend of traditional and modern. I would buy one and infact I may just buy one. Thank you Dave, I always enjoy your work.

GAWD i love me some budget bushcraft! Dave you've been puttin out some of the most sensible product info around. For cheap solid and versital pick up a few wax rings. Yep the toilet ones. Just got done waxin my new leather work boots and decided to use the rest for a candle in a pellet tin. It burns well with a cotton rag wick and it makes for the best waterproofer i've found. Keep it up, us penny pinchers are waitin!!

One other thing that might be note worth adding about the 12 gauge is its cheap and easy to reload and as long as the shell can properly crimp it can be reused .I have reloaded 12 gauge for shooting sporting clays for some time and you can really fine tune your load for any situation you might need .I can not remember what I have in my set up but it was a lot less and is much easyer than my rifle and pistol reloading setups . its also kind of fun just as a hobbie , just some food for thought .

Marlin was purchased by the Cerberus corporation I think around 2009. They closed the New Haven, CT plant, where Marlins had been crafted forever, and moved the entire operation to a production facility in Ilion, NY. They didn't "fire" any of the longtime Marlin builders, they let them know they could move to the new facility if they wanted, but the new facility was to be highly automated. Many declined. Marlin quality and their reputation has suffered since.
I am hooked on these single shot 12ga. I keep one in each truck cut down to 20" barrel. Just picked up another one at a gun show for $80. this weekend. New they list for around $150. Just a warning to others. Buy the newer style with the break open lever by the hammer. The old style have a swinging lever behined the hammer. When you shoot those the recoil comes back and the lever can cut the web of your hand.

This would seem like a good option for a second quick follow up shot, and the versatility of having the ability of two different loads in two barrels appeals to me. "Two is one, and one is none."

Dave, have you done any vids on the pieta bp revolver to back up a rifle. Cabelas sells them for around 200. I have two 44 s and two 31s . Very accurate and 6 shots. Also you can buy a conversion cylinder with no paperwork to convert it to standard ammo!!!
Thanks for the info, I've been thinking about getting another gun and now i have an idea where to start. I've started going to Walmart every morning around 2am when they are unloading their palettes. I take a friend with me since we are only allowed to buy 3 boxes of ammo per person per day. Like you said plenty of 12ga hardly anything else. Out of the dozen times I've gone we have found 1 box 9mm, 2 boxes .45 acp & 3 boxes .40 s&w.

Im not sure what the rules are for Americans buying ammo in Canada and returning to the US, but you may want to check them out Dave. 500 rounds of Winchester .22LR is about $15 to $18 bucks and I have no problem getting it up here, or any other calibre. 12ga, .308, 9mm, .303, .270, you name it, we got it. Just got rid of the federal registry for long guns (black or smokeless). Safe shooting and best wishes from Canada brother.
Nice Video Dave, I've been looking at H&R for a few months now after watching your Longhunter series. I think you mixed up the receiver on the Handi Rifle. The SB1 receiver is for the shotgun, pistol, and muzzle loading (Huntsman) ammunition. The SB2 Reciever will work for those and the rifle ammunition for 22 Hornet and larger. They have a different receiver for the 22 sportsman. I will be investing in the Shotgun and muzzle loader soon. Thanks for introducing me to H&R.
Dave i took my H&R 12ga and put a factory H&R straight style buttstock like off there 45/70 rifle i got off ebay and then ordered a Kentucky long rifle trigger gaurd from dixi gun works and did a little grinding and bending to in then drilled and tapped the holes on my H&R. It looks great and more like a trade gun. The Trigger gaurd was like $15 and i got the straight stock for $20

Rifled slugs do not spin in a smooth bore. Remember there is a wad surrounding that slug. The "rifling" on the slug is simply to allow for compression through tight chokes.

It is interesting to see the regional variations. Here in NY we have plenty of .22LR ammo (at least at my store), but 12 gauge keeps disappearing. That being said, things seem to be improving here. Over the last few months I haven't had any issues finding most types of ammo.
I love your videos but you made one comment I can't ignore....rifled slugs do NOT spin when fired from a smoothbore barrel, what the rifling does on a rifled slug is allow room for the slug to deform as it passes through the barrels choke. The design of the slug, with its weight forward and hollow base is what stabilizes it in flight.
Hey Dave, have you ever heard of the Rossi "Wizard" series of switch barrel guns? I have one I bought in .223 and have since added 12 & 20 ga. a .308, 45-70 and a .50 muzzleloading barrel. I've had it for about 3 years now and have shot it extensively in all calibers with absolutely no problems. I paid $235.00 for the .223 new, and picked up the other barrels used from $35.00 to $115.00 each, drop in, no fitting needed. It's a good system. I only wish Choate made a survival stock for it.
Is there any reason other than price to choose a single shot over a double barrel? They all seem to weigh about the same (5-7lbs), but a double with two triggers seems to be much more versatile. Apart from a quick follow up shot, keeping a slug loaded for defense while hunting sounds like a good idea.
the new England barrels will swap between the h&r gun too for the most part and i was under the impression that a sb2 reviver would work for shotgun barrel
8 years ago or so an NEF (which is now H&R I guess) single shot "pardner" was around 80 bucks new! Now they are 200...For the price I would get one of 5 or so different pump guns on the market for the same price. Pretty bad the price of the gun more than doubled in that amount of time.
Dave, Have you considered an airgun? Crosman ammo is cheap. .177 and .22 calibers are very capable of taking down small game up to racoons. They are silent. They offer an outlet for those that want to still shoot, but can't find any ammo.

I wanna get one of these in .30-06 which would be my survival caliber for where i live.. need a good punch out of a heavy bullet to take game in the thicket. then i would get a .12 Ga barrel for it in case i need to take a bird or other small game with shot. imho, .30-06 and 12 are the 2 best WROL and SHTF cartridges.. they are common, they are cheaper than most calibers, and you can find them in hunting cabins and stuff in a WROL situation as a just in case. plus you can scope both.
@wildernessoutfitters I have always been an avid 22cal hunter. My current best was 250 yrd head shot on a squirrel, and largest was a 220lb hog . Last year my family faced hard times due to the ammo shortage. It truly put new meaning to the old moto. One shot One kill. I was lucky enough to make 103 kills with my last box of 100rds . As this winter gets closer I still face the same issue with ammo here in FL. My question. How will i hunt small game with the more common large cal shotguns?
You can shoot rifled slugs out of a shotgun with a rifled barrel. The rifling on a slug doesn't really spin the slug very much at all. It allows it to pass thru full choke barrels. A rifled slug is accurate because the mass is forward on the slug allowing it to fly more like an arrow than a bullet from a rifled barrel. Don't spend $15-$25 on a box of sabots, when you can spend $4-$8 for a box and they'll work just fine. You dont want to use a sabot out of a smooth bore since it'll be inaccurate
First shotgun my dad got me in 1983 at 12. Lasted about 4-5 years, shot a 3” mag and the hand guard bolt to barrel snapped causing the barrel to fly up hit me in the face and 4 stitches in my lip 🤣
Dave, what do you think about Rossi firearms. They have a matched set that you can get with a 12ga, 22LR, and 50cal barrel that has an MSRP of like $420. Seems like a good deal for 3 options.
Got my H&R Pardner 12 gauge single and adapters ready to go. When i picked up a new sidearm from our local sporting goods store last week i asked him when his ammo comes in each week.He told me it doesn't because he isn't ordering anymore because it isn't worth it?.A new Cabellas just opened in my area and before 12 noon the ammo shelves were empty opening day.Too many folks reselling ammo and that ruins it for everyone that really needs ammo for hunting in my opinion.

hey dave was wondering your thoughts on air rifle's? something around .22, enough power to take down most small game not going to be as good as a 12g of course, but pellets... can carry lots of pellets for a longer term situation? 12g for bigger game, but for that everyday meal smaller rifle? personally i dont have a shotgun nor used one, few reasons.. but have had good hunting with my .22 air rifle and well other rifles.
I'd love to watch all of your videos but everytime you (or other bushcrafters) upload videos about weapons, I don't want to watch them since I know, that I will never be able to own these in my country... . . I like the common man series. H&R shotguns are fantastic guns! I still love my flintlock musket though!

Dave i took my H&R 12ga and put a factory H&R straight style buttstock like off there 45/70 rifle i got off ebay and then ordered a Kentucky long rifle trigger gaurd from dixi gun works and did a little grinding and bending to in then drilled and tapped the holes on my H&R. It looks great and more like a trade gun. The Trigger gaurd was like $15 and i got the straight stock for $20

Rifled slugs do not spin in a smooth bore. Remember there is a wad surrounding that slug. The "rifling" on the slug is simply to allow for compression through tight chokes.

It is interesting to see the regional variations. Here in NY we have plenty of .22LR ammo (at least at my store), but 12 gauge keeps disappearing. That being said, things seem to be improving here. Over the last few months I haven't had any issues finding most types of ammo.

We have been lucky in Canada, we still have as many firearm options as we did before.
I love your videos but you made one comment I can't ignore....rifled slugs do NOT spin when fired from a smoothbore barrel, what the rifling does on a rifled slug is allow room for the slug to deform as it passes through the barrels choke. The design of the slug, with its weight forward and hollow base is what stabilizes it in flight.

you can get a nice 410/45lc for the h&r sb1 or sb2 frame thats rifled
then you can load up some 45lc to get near 44mag power (if not more)
Hey Dave, have you ever heard of the Rossi "Wizard" series of switch barrel guns? I have one I bought in .223 and have since added 12 & 20 ga. a .308, 45-70 and a .50 muzzleloading barrel. I've had it for about 3 years now and have shot it extensively in all calibers with absolutely no problems. I paid $235.00 for the .223 new, and picked up the other barrels used from $35.00 to $115.00 each, drop in, no fitting needed. It's a good system. I only wish Choate made a survival stock for it.
Is there any reason other than price to choose a single shot over a double barrel? They all seem to weigh about the same (5-7lbs), but a double with two triggers seems to be much more versatile. Apart from a quick follow up shot, keeping a slug loaded for defense while hunting sounds like a good idea.
the new England barrels will swap between the h&r gun too for the most part and i was under the impression that a sb2 reviver would work for shotgun barrel
8 years ago or so an NEF (which is now H&R I guess) single shot "pardner" was around 80 bucks new! Now they are 200...For the price I would get one of 5 or so different pump guns on the market for the same price. Pretty bad the price of the gun more than doubled in that amount of time.

Have you considered an airgun? Crosman ammo is cheap. .177 and .22 calibers are very capable of taking down small game up to racoons. They are silent. They offer an outlet for those that want to still shoot, but can't find any ammo.

I wanna get one of these in .30-06 which would be my survival caliber for where i live.. need a good punch out of a heavy bullet to take game in the thicket. then i would get a .12 Ga barrel for it in case i need to take a bird or other small game with shot.
imho, .30-06 and 12 are the 2 best WROL and SHTF cartridges.. they are common, they are cheaper than most calibers, and you can find them in hunting cabins and stuff in a WROL situation as a just in case. plus you can scope both.
@wildernessoutfitters I have always been an avid 22cal hunter. My current best was 250 yrd head shot on a squirrel, and largest was a 220lb hog . Last year my family faced hard times due to the ammo shortage. It truly put new meaning to the old moto. One shot One kill. I was lucky enough to make 103 kills with my last box of 100rds . As this winter gets closer I still face the same issue with ammo here in FL.

You can shoot rifled slugs out of a shotgun with a rifled barrel. The rifling on a slug doesn't really spin the slug very much at all. It allows it to pass thru full choke barrels. A rifled slug is accurate because the mass is forward on the slug allowing it to fly more like an arrow than a bullet from a rifled barrel. Don't spend $15-$25 on a box of sabots, when you can spend $4-$8 for a box and they'll work just fine. You dont want to use a sabot out of a smooth bore since it'll be inaccurate
First shotgun my dad got me in 1983 at 12. Lasted about 4-5 years, shot a 3” mag and the hand guard bolt to barrel snapped causing the barrel to fly up hit me in the face and 4 stitches in my lip 🤣

Dave, what do you think about Rossi firearms. They have a matched set that you can get with a 12ga, 22LR, and 50cal barrel that has an MSRP of like $420. Seems like a good deal for 3 options.

When i picked up a new sidearm from our local sporting goods store last week i asked him when his ammo comes in each week.He told me it doesn't because he isn't ordering anymore because it isn't worth it?.A new Cabellas just opened in my area and before 12 noon the ammo shelves were empty opening day.Too many folks reselling ammo and that ruins it for everyone that really needs ammo for hunting in my opinion.

not going to be as good as a 12g of course, but pellets... can carry lots of pellets for a longer term situation? 12g for bigger game, but for that everyday meal smaller rifle?
personally i dont have a shotgun nor used one, few reasons.. but have had good hunting with my .22 air rifle and well other rifles.
