  • We just got our new Haas VM-3 VMC delivered! Today I’ll be doing a machine overview and if I would make this purchase again!
    ✅ Tired of making 1 part at a time? 👉 piersonworkholding.com/pro-pa...
    It’s delivery day of yet another machine. No, it’s not a VF-2 SS, really popular machine. I’ve got several VF-2s. It is a Haas VM-3 vertical machining center (VMC). Now someone keeps saying there’s a recession. I don’t think so. We’re buying machines. We’re continuing to grow the company. We’re making smart buying decisions. Let’s get this guy moved inside!

    Currently have 3 mazak VCN-570c mills sitting on the floor. Electrician can’t hook them up because they need 150 amp breakers that are backordered and he assumed we needed 100a and got those ahead. 😭

    I always loved the X/Y T-slot of the VM machines for the flexible work holding, but I see that working better in a job-shop setting where you do a lot of funky setups vs a production setting where realistically once you set the job up, it stays that way indefinitely.

    Great video! Thank you for great content. I noticed that the Kaizen foam bins are 3d printed. Maybe make a lip on the one with the micrometer a bit higher so in case the micrometer is poorly placed into the foam it does not just slide down and falls on the ground 😁

    For the table configuration problem, you can take a upper table with standard T slot configuration on the original table, like a pallet. Haas has a different size in catalog. Othervise you can see to catalog from different production company to pallet machines.

    Thats so neat I didnt know they made a 5 axis rotary for the Haas! We have a few 4th axis rotary tables where I run production machines and adding a 5th axis (and finding a good programmer to go with it XD) would be fantastic for what we do!

    The air knife looks great. Misused brain power is a very good argument to automate the cleaning phase. I have one of those fans, it's a nice tool but it does create mist and a lot of noise. The nice thing is that I now know a job is almost finished as soon as I hear the fan blowing 🙂

    • @PiersonWorkholding
      @PiersonWorkholding  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I forgot to mention that air knives don't take up a tool position or have any moving parts to fly at the glass at mach 2.3 if they break.

    • @Mike-lt6sj
      @Mike-lt6sj ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why would you want to run your spindle at 8k rpm's unnecessarily?
      I can't stand those fans, but I pull spindles and don't like it when engineers run trochoidal cycles on box way machines, either.

  • @LubomirPotocki
    @LubomirPotocki ปีที่แล้ว

    Jay, appreciate your content and taking inspiration from you. 👍👍 Could you please tell us what is the key difference between Haas VF and VM series? Of course from your point of view. Yet another thing on airknife. I can see you blow the air straight down. This causes coolant and chips residues to stay on your part because they bounce back and forth with the surface of the fixture. You may tilt it a bit sideways to help those particle choose the direction of escape. Will it get rid of 100% waste - no, but it will massively reduce the remnants on your parts and fixture. Cheers!

    • @PiersonWorkholding
      @PiersonWorkholding  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll do a followup video on VF vs VM in 2023. No, the air knife does not cause things to bounce back and forth. The high volume of air causes chips and coolant to flow with the scattering of the air. We tried angling the air knife and it worked worse. Straight down is best.

  • @The.Talent
    @The.Talent ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I remember seeing that AvE put a crimped piece of copper pipe into his tool holder and using the through-spindle air, he essentially turned that into an air-knife and used that to blow off the work pieces after each setup. Perhaps a lot cheaper than an air knife, but maybe also not quite as efficient.

    • @MakeItWithCalvin
      @MakeItWithCalvin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could see the main disadvantage of the chip fan is you need an extra tool change, and it is one less pocket in the carousel to hold a tool.

      @tylergilbertson4086 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @PiersonWorkholding
      @PiersonWorkholding  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We used to use chip fans but they blow air on a smaller area and therefore are slower. As others mentioned, they take up a valuable tool position. They also have moving parts which are literally dangerous projectiles when they fail. Air knives have no moving parts, are very consistent and require no maintenance.

    I was wondering if you had any thoughts on TRT-160 vs TR-160? I'm wondering if the TR-160 will make better parts as it's supported in both ends, but it takes up more room though.

    table is a pain to clean. it's been a love hate relationship. my solution has been, i don't clean out the t slots until i absolutely have to. just keep it brushed off level with the table. don't want to let it go to long though or the crap really gets packed in. so usually clean the slot out like once a week.
