It takes the right voice but, once found, eternal scenes arise from Mozart's genius. This closing piece in Don Giovanni is as unworldly as the aria by the Queen of the Night in the Magic Flute, both intended to be supernatural.
Vocally, this is a knockout performance, one of the best of this scene I have ever heard. The staging is a bit static by modern standards, of course, although the camera work is excellent.
the statue especially needs to animate a little more. he sounds fantastic, but the way he stands absolutely still draws attention to the goofy faces the singer makes. like, i get hes a statue, but bend the rules a little for a scene where our... "hero" gets dragged to hell.
Brillante e profonda. Ideale !!!
Ah Mozart! and the voices! the voices! sublime! One of the greatest masterpieces in the music world! No need for grandiose and overwhelming sets. Extraordinary talent and Mozart eternal genius are all that is required. The best bass I have ever heard. The best voice interpretation. I am in music heaven.
@@pablodemarcos5379 Thank you for this - when I was going through versions it didn't come up. Superb conducting and so atmospheric. A great commendatore, and what a DG in Siepi too.
Before Giorgio was done singing the initial "Giovanni" I was blown away and found myself saying out loud, "Now THAT'S a bass!!" He's just awe inspiring. Blew me away.
"Hear the unrestrained craving of passion, hear the sighing of erotic love, hear the whisper of temptation, hear the vortex of seduction, hear the stillness of the moment-hear, hear, hear Mozart’s Don Giovanni." -Søren Kierkegaard, Either/Or
Ganzarolli and Bacquier are incredibly impressive. I saw the Falstaff recording with Bacquier, but I do really think this is his prime. His acting is so masterful, and he stayed in the zone until the very end of each opera. It’s so impressive. There’s not much on Ganzarolli, but he’s a real master. I really like hearing him as Leporello. He’s perfect for the role actually. Tadeo was also great in this scene, but remember these two were up there for 3 hours before this scene and still sounded incredible.
Impressive performance by Tadeo and it is a tribute to his clear enunciation that I've noticed that he sings a different text from any other that I heard until now: "cibo eterno" (eternal food) instead of "cibo celeste" (heavenly food), "altre brame" (other yearnings) instead of "altre cure" (other cares).
The spare staging and slow pace focus us on the drama: the statue of an incorruptible and fearsome leader comes to dinner, and slowly but unstoppablly, consigns an unrepentant villain to Hell. Seems more eerie and frightening than most richly staged productions with glittering stars.
Gracias!!!
I've only heard a few basses but so far Giorgio's voice is the most powerful. My prima voce is in the bass range but no number of hours could I practice where I would sound like him.
Bellissima interpretazione.
Certo che no!
I must hear more from this singer. A really superior instrument from what I can hear in this excerpt. Pretty comparable to Talvela in this scene & that’s saying something. Ashamed to say I was not aware of this bass at all.
Impressionante! Note basse profonde, da paura!
Scariest of them All = Powerful Dark deepest voice I've seen.
Voce di basso profondo meravigliosa e potente. Mozart non ha bisogno di commenti.
It takes the right voice but, once found, eternal scenes arise from Mozart's genius. This closing piece in Don Giovanni is as unworldly as the aria by the Queen of the Night in the Magic Flute, both intended to be supernatural.
Splendid music atonishing with the right interpretation
Venue, date, cast & conductor please!
Except the Queen of the Night and the Commendatore are complete opposites in affection for their daughters XD
Vocally, this is a knockout performance, one of the best of this scene I have ever heard. The staging is a bit static by modern standards, of course, although the camera work is excellent.
By modern standards? Most operas today have a black backdrop and it’s up to you to imagine the rest.
@@Dan474834 You are right. The backdrop is hand painted and adds immensely to the scene.
@@michaelvaccaro3129 yes! it even is made so that one perceives commendatore as larger than life, like a statue should be

No doubt: best Commendatore ever!
Actually, many sound amazing in this role. It’s Mozart more than the singers who thrill our ears.
