The HPZ840 manual calls for the Z Turbo Drive 1st card (M.2 ) to be installed in slot 1 first then slot 6, I also believe how many processors affects this. I am assuming that Z Turbo Drive is the HP version of an NVME adapter card.

You'll have to do some troubleshooting to try and resolve the issue.
Double check the bios level and settings on the systems that are working and compare them to the systems that are not recognizing the SSDs.
Also, try moving the NVMe SSDs from the working systems to the systems that aren't recognizing the SSDs to see if that solves the issue.
      Good luck!

If you fail to get your drive to be detected after rebooting your system, try shutting down fully, and then restart your machine, to see if that works for you.
Seems like a lot of ZX40 have that fault, I have 10 workstations at work, and half of them will NEVER reboot, but are fine with booting up from cold.
Same Bios that has been copied into all the machines as well. Seems like a hardware fault to me.
