You'll like it. Mine's been in use for over 5 years now and the blade still holds up great.

@@AlbertaBushcrafter that's great. That sounds like a good saw!

@@shimoda3339 I have almost a dozen 7-inch saws like this one. Silky saws top them all. I even have a series of Saw Shootout videos on my Saws for the Backwoods playlist, and Silky won all categories and that surprised me a little.

@@AlbertaBushcrafter That's awesome. I have always used axes and knives, but never really owned a saw for camping or the outdoors, but I always wanted to get one. They are great to have just in case you need to go off the grid. Whatever it is, it should be light and compact. These appear to be both. They seem like a great item to have.

I am researching the silky for a camp saw. Physically I am restricted to vehicle camping now, so I might opt for the longer blade. What do you think, would the extra length be an advantage for firewood collection or shelter building? Thank you for your thoughtful and well made video. I subscribed for watching more of your videos. Thanks.

+James Carmean Thanks, James! The PocketBoy 170 is great for backpacking, but for heavier work I would recommend a longer blade. Silky makes the GomBoy 240 which is 240mm (approx. 10 inches) and it's a very nice saw. But if you've got about $60-70, my current favorite for a Silky saw is the BigBoy 360 or BigBoy 2000. Both of these have 360mm blades (14.5 inches) and I've bucked up entire logs with my 2000.

Thank you. Most of my needs would be for firewood and shelter construction. Bad back, really bad knees and serious breathing problems. I think a twelve inch blade would be probably be all that my needs would be.

The Silky saws go from a 240mm up to a 360mm with nothing in between. But with that in mind, the GomBoy 240 does a decent job on logs up to 5-6 inches thick and it's cheaper than the BigBoy 2000 or 360. The latter cuts through much thicker logs - my BigBoy 2000 cuts 8-9 inch logs with a bit of work.

Alberta Bushcrafter Sounds like the 240 may be the one to fit my needs. Thanks you for your time and responses to help me out. I am looking forward to your next videos. Christmas and my birthday are looking so I may get a surprise.

Nice demo.... I use saws mainly for pruning and grafting so while speed is nice, getting into tight spots and making clean smooth cuts on 1-3" dia branches are my priorities. Can you recommend a saw to let me do this with minimal collateral damage? Thanks in advance!

+e pita I worked as an arborist for a while before I launched my channel. The Silky saws are the ones you want to use. I use them for pruning in my yard (though not grafting yet), and these saws are the sharpest and smoothest ones around. For the branches you want to cut, the saw in this video would be the one for you. Forget the other "bushcraft" saws and the Fiskars saws - and I've used dozens of these. No saw I've ever used has ever worked like a Silky.

btw, have you compared the cut of the fine teeth vs the medium teeth that you have there? I take it the medium already has a nice clean cut for grafting? have you tried any of the ARS folding saws as well? They look quite promising.

+e pita I've never tried the ARS saws but I'll look at them. The medium I have here makes a very clean cut for bushcrafting. However, I have tried the Silky blades with the fine teeth and the extra-fine ones as well and they cut even nicer than the medium so they might be even better for grafting. Big Bear Tools (www.bigbeartools.com) sells the entire line for $40.99 CDN each.

How "tall" are each sawtooth on the fine teeth silky blades? I know theyre 20teeth /30mm but curious about the height of each compared to the medium which I know is 1/4" each.

You might want to check directly with Silky Saws or Big Bear Tools on that one. From what I've seen the fine and extra-fine teeth are a tiny bit shorter than the medium teeth but the difference seemed to be in fractions of a millimeter (and I didn't have a micrometer on me). Still, it's understandable as finer teeth need to be a hair shorter to retain their strength, or they'll snap off.

SilkyChannel Thanks! I was a bit shocked at how well the Pocketboy cuts compared to what's basically a Bahco Laplander. The Laplander is considered to be one of the best folding saws out there and the Silky Pocketboy just blew it away!

Hello, based on your experience the hacksaw Silky Pocket Boy is truly the finest on the market?

    • @AlbertaBushcrafter
      @AlbertaBushcrafter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. I'd say that Silky saws are the finest folding and pruning saws out there. Even though they only cut on the pull stroke they're way faster than other saws, and their blades stay sharp a lot longer than BAHCO or Fiskars blades do. So while I know a lot of celebrity TH-cam outdoors folks push the BAHCO Laplander, I've actually proven that the Silky saws are better products.
In fact, one of my subscribers and I did a whole series last year called the 2015 Saw Shootout, with several categories. Those videos are on my Saws For The Backwoods playlist, and the Silky saws won every single category they were entered in.
