@@cinnamon5675 True. I literally hate how people (mostly Americans) excuse blackfishing/intentionally appearing racially ambiguous because of person's nationality/nationality of their ancestors. Like dude, no. Have you even seen an Italian who's Caucasian irl? Like Ariana? Those people are unmistakably white. Same goes for white (I specify this coz you know people of the same nationality can be of different race, different range of skin tones of course) Spanish people, white Croatians or Greeks. If an American said this to a South European's face, that they are not white because they tan more easily, they would either get fuckin offended or confused lol. Italian doesn't equal racially ambiguous. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I live in Nebraska and we were always taught that people from Southern Asia or the Middle East weren't to be called Asian because they had darker skin. When I met a person from China for the first time (who had dark skin), we had a conversation about colorism pertaining to Asia. I had to unlearn all of the stereotypes and colorism I was taught. Sometimes I still catch myself hanging onto a stereotype, and people like Frederic really help the process.

@@gordonramsayslambsauce Yeah exactly :( it's horrible because we're taught to hate our skin colour for not being either peach or shades lighter in both Asia and the Western world, (while in Western countries white people are allowed to tan to our tones and get praised.) And then one day we just discover that no it's fine to be the skin tone you are, and infact you're absolutely stunning! And we also have to deal with getting kicked out of our continent because we don't define a stereotype of what "looking Asian" means. It's frustrating because people still say stuff like this. And don't get m started on how Southeast Asians don't exist to some people and are grouped in with East Asians. "Oh she's Filipino? I thought she was Chinese, cause I think Asia is just Chinese." I heard a classmate say this about someone else. Like how are people still this uneducated??

Like there's nothing wrong with a Tan but Ariana also tanned a WHOLE lot darker than her actual skin tone and adapted AAVE. Rather she knew it or not, she was taking from a culture that she didn't need to. Same with now, she's adapting to what's popular and I'm sure she'll do it again. And yeah, the fact that she takes these features that people of that race get shamed for is a problem. I just found out Ariana Grande got a Japanese tattoo that doesn't even match the meaning she wanted 🥲 also I want to point out that plastic surgery is 100% a factor into looking more racially ambiguous, and correct me if I'm wrong but as of right now, Ariana denies having any plastic surgery even though many plastic surgeons have pointed out that's not possible due to her face and eye shape changing. Someone actually said she received a surgery that lifts the eye, similar to the surgery Bella Hadid received and it actually makes the double eyelid/crease less pronounced. Mina Le made a great video about plastic surgery, I linked it in the description!
I want y'all to know that you should NOT look up to people who have had plastic surgery as the peak of beauty, because it's technically artificial and you'll set unrealistic expectations for how your body and face should look. Puberty does not change your facial structure into a different race. Accepting yourself is a journey, building self-esteem is hard (I'm making that video soon don't worry).

As a mixed person it can be VERY challenging to feel like you fit into any group - but people trying to be racially ambiguous for the aEsTHeTiC erase the voices and the struggles of ACTUALLY racially ambiguous people. Off topic, but thank you for bringing up, and at the very least being AWARE that "making everything about race" is a very US thing. As an Eastern European, I know it usually comes from US American marginalized groups as a way of poking fun, but it's pretty insulting to hear "white people have no culture" when my country fought for the right to exist for centuries. Americans rly do be acting like know-it-alls, my ex was a German-Italian and rolled her eyes at people trying to tell her "Italians are POC". I wish Americans made it less about race but more about their messed up racist system. Systemic racism is much less of a thing in euro countries, most racism here comes from xenophobia and "worse" and "poorer" countries like us Slavs will often get treated just as bad in the UK or Germany as darker skinned people.

Slavs are often made fun of and it’s never addressed, I’ve heard a few times from my peers in Canada things that are really rude to do with the tragedies in ww2 and they make jokes out of it when it’s a serious topic. In other places in Europe Slavs are as you said treated just as bad but nobody addresses it because we are the same colour as them so we’re just assumed to be never made fun of. In Canada the education system is better than the U.S when it comes to education but they still make candy the centre of attention in English studies and history.

The comment about "why do Americans make everything about race" and Frederic's response about the USA being a melting pot actually makes so much sense. Alot of countries aren't as racially diverse or big as the USA making the number of problems relating to race there larger then others. Also with countries where the racial diversity is basically non-existent (ones I can think of are some scandinavian countries and places like Japan) it makes sense for problems relating to race are really non-existent because, for the most part, the majority of the people think the same meaning less conflict in opinions and they won't be discriminated bases on race.
That's at least my take on it.

    • @whatsyourname9581
      @whatsyourname9581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +81

exactly. While I think that the USA obsession with race is also from their very wild history of colonization and just everything being somehow related to that, its diversity is definitely an indicator. People also often wonder why many people in the kpop industry are being so insensitive of culture. It's mainly because many East Asian countries are homogenous, and there is simply no need for them to know about any other culture than their own. Why this is in no ways an "excuse" for their actions, it's an explanation for it. The internet is still incredibly young, and our society can't change fast enough to adapt to the new perspective it provides us.

    • @erikperhs_
      @erikperhs_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

I don't think that's the only reason... Here in Brazil we're not that aggravated by race, and we're even more diverse than in the US! For example, in the US if your grandparents are italian you'd say YOU are Italian, while here in Brazil we don't even take into consideration where our ancestors came from when it comes to how we identify ourselves because it's too mixed, so everyone is just Brazilian.
I think the main difference is how strong racism is in the US. When slavery ended here, the black community kind of spread out, while in the US you formed huge communities where *until this day* it can be a problem if you're white. You're too attached to your past, I'd say

In Japan there’s a lot of ignorance rather than hostility towards minorities because those minorities are so rarely interacted with. It’s a very safe country and it’s probably not too difficult to casually correct someone about a stereotype because those stereotypes are *not* particularly ingrained in Japanese culture.
In America, stereotypes are deeply engrained. It’s a country where many people immigrate here, but the largest group of immigrants is consistently hated across American history. There’s a lot of false justification for the dehumanization of black people that has been passed down for generations. America has harmed its minorities through the media with harmful tropes and charicatures.
That’s not to say Japan is the greatest. Again, there is ignorance and I had no idea for the longest time Japan had an indigenous population. I don’t know how well they are treated or have been treated in history.

Added clarification for the “white people have no culture” saying from the US: As a white person from America, what I hear when people say that is that our culture as white people is based on our ethnicity, not our race. Germany has its own unique culture, so does Poland and Ireland and Scotland, etc. But “Black Culture” exists as a subculture because of slavery and many Black people losing their ethnicity. White people in America do not have a subculture, we are a melting pot of different ethnicities. I would consider my culture to be from the traditions of Poland and Germany that my ancestors have passed down, as well as my American nationality, not because of my skin color.

@@lucikka3674 I mean tbf, as a euro-tunisian person, the usa/canada is the only place on earth I've seen being so defensive about cultural appreciation. Not that it's a bad thing really, it's also absolutely understandable considering it's history and ethnical mix; but most countries are much more lax so long as they are doing it from a place of appreciation, even if it's just esthetic.
Our relationship to culture and clothes is much more specific although, it's way greater than western and eastern europe. In france for example (I'm french born and raised but my bloodline consists mostly of brittanics and Netherlands/germanic folks although I have a good mix of other eu ethnicities from my mother regardless, and my dad is tunisian), here we literally call towns ans cities from different regions "The countries of [insert region name".
Someon from let's say lyon in the Rhône, will recognize that the culture of Auvergne is different than their's regardless of overlappings. So when exploring different regions and their cultures, food, clothes etc... it feels foreign to us, although familiar enough not to be totally lost; but we all identify more with our region/city/town than france itself.
So someon from the Rhone wearing traditional clothes from Brittany is fairly similar to us as a french person, regardless of the region, wearing traditional german clothes.
That's why the race pov doesn't work here too, we're on a region/ethnic basis that honnestly just makes more sense. It's like pounds vs grams, sure they both work but one of them is clearly more specific and mesh better with most of the world.
So back to your point, I'd argue that them being western european doesn't make much of a difference, beside you'd need to know where their bloodlines are from. I'm from lyon, border of the south/southern city, yet most of my bloodline came from and resided in the north and I wouldn't have known this if it weren't from transmission.
I honnestly wished, if they can afford it ofc, that "white" americans would take a dna test and try to connect more with their culture and heritage, I am certain that it would help ease cultural appropriation and other similar issues as they wouldn't have to cling to something else than their's to feel this sense of identity through culture.
Maybe i am projecting though, my mom was verry racist and so is france still so when I had to cut tirs with my tunisian side due to their abusive nature, I made myself forget about it. But I also struggled with my european heritage and when I got into japanese street fashion and just culture in general, i was so ecstatic to see that older traditions still lived on so well there and became infatuated with it. Thankfully I never became any kind of extreme weaboo, however; getting into american comunities and accademia talks about culture and identity really forced me to face that. I got such big fomo from not being able to claim a culture that was mine like I saw others doing and it really messed me up until I faced myself.
So yeah I'll stop the rambling but it's just much more complicated than the race system allows us to acknowledge

I think Ariana and a lot of people don’t even recognize they’re appropriating BIPoC when following trends. It’s clearer to me as an Asian because we’ve been made to be aware of our ethnic features in a negative way throughout history but even I partook in trends that I didn’t know came from black culture because it was popularized by non black people. The same way people do “fox eyes” because even the name lacks racial descriptions and is done by non Asians, they usually just don’t associate it with us.
BIPoC that feel appropriated can give celebs a hard time because it is frustrating and sometimes it feels too “obvious” for them not to know. But the issue doesn’t exist in just some thoughtless white girl; it’s racism that disrespects BIPoC in favour of white people, exoticism that fetishizes us when we’re appropriated or become mainstream, and beauty standards that make others perpetuate it without recognizing it.

Learning about Asian culture and what is appropriate and what is not appropriate , is tough because Asians are not a hive mind. I feel it's understanding that we, as a cultural group of asians, can reflect and understand on the broad terms, yet listen in on the specific and true events happening in other smaller cultural communities.

I wonder if her constantly switching her entire look- to the point that people think she’s a different ethnicity, has anything to do with Nickelodeon and her current persona. If you saw her when she was really younger, before Victorious, she had dark brown curly hair, light skin, button nose, small eyes (with not really visible lids), and an overall extremely youthful look. Then she was on Nick, where she had aggressively straightened red hair, really pink pale skin, and was constantly oversexualized. After this she had her straight hair with a balayage wearing Black short clothes, looking very obvious white. (I’m Black btw). Then she started getting tanner, and her ponytails occasionally had texture in them. Makeup trends shifted and so did hers, to big lips , more bronzers, and an overall darker appearance. Then looked again the most obviously white in 2021(imo), and now in 2021 she looks more possibly asian. She has said before her look on Nick wasn’t up to her but up to Dan and the people working on the show, and that they took drastic measures to make her look this way (keeping her out the sun at all times, damaging her hair with the straightening and dying so she had to wear a wig on Sam and Cat). She looked like an idealized sexy white girl in the 2010’s . After her Nick career was mainly over, she looked white, and more like she used to, and she was sexualized so much. There are so many interviews. Then, she started looking less and less like herself. And her personality changed more in appearances as well. More bite and sass. People say she started talking in a blaccent. She sounds a lot like her friend, Victoria Monet, who is Black. Looking more racially ambiguous, leaning towards Black, was definitely at it’s height then. Currently, she’s looking both sexy and cutesy but in a different way than before. She’s paler, and definitely reminding everyone she loves “Asian culture “(in quotes because an entire continent can’t have one culture ). (I cannot claim that she is or isn’t asianbaiting , but this is the current defense aggressive arianators have)Right now, looking racially ambiguous leaning towards Asian is in. She always looks like the most idealized person of the time.
She said recently that she probably won’t wear her naturally curly hair out. She’s not comfortable with it , and doesn’t want to merge real Ariana with her persona. It seems as though she always tries to make herself look the most desirable. I’m not trying to diagnose anything, but I’m certain that she was told that she had to look a certain way to be popular and to have people like her while on Victorious (based on the things other girls on Dan Schneider shows have said, this seems par for course) . She was 15/16. She’s probably internalized that, while also making her “desirable” persona look completely unlike she does with no makeup or tan on. That’s a great way to distance yourself (disregarding racial insensitivity). Definitely not an excuse, but just something I noticed.
Tldr: she may not be trying to intentionally change her race, just look trying to look different than she naturally does and keep up with trends(and racial features being trends is in itself an issue that’s bigger than her)

hey guys, I saw a discussion on whether or not italians (and especially southern italians) are POC.
I'm italian and this is a Very Very Delicate Topic, so please don't talk about it with just your american standards in mind, because there are things you might not know.
let's start off by saying that "Italian" is a nationality, not an ethnicity. Italians can be any ethnicity.
there are black italians and asian italians just like there are black americans and asian americans.
would you say "oh, (PERSON) is american, so they are POC"? no, of course not. same thing with italians.
one thing you might not know about is the century long discrimination between northern and southern italians: southern italians are considered lazy, ignorant, dishonest, criminals. tied to the m*fia.
We're victims of discrimination (not racism, discrimination! It's about where you were born, not what you look like.).
Some political parties push to separate north italy (= the good, rich italy with the smart and honest people) and south italy (= the bad, poor part of italy with the stupid criminals.)
these political parties are EXTREMELY POPULAR. i'm talking about... a good third of the population roots for them. So they can stop southern italians from stealing their jobs. it's a tragedy.
Please don't EVER say something like "southern italians are POC, while northern italians are white".
    Never.
That's an old f*scist argument to further separate us. Say we're a "different race" to make us look more different.
BUT THE THING IS, we're not.
it's literally wrong. some of us are white, some aren't. same for northern italy.
