I’ve been trying to grow plants all my life and had little success, until I watched one of Gary’s videos...now I grow everything in large plastic pots with NO COMPOST just 4 parts coco coir 3 parts sand 2 parts perlite 2 parts vermiculite and 1 part charcoal..I have 25 different fruit trees and six avocados trees and everything is AMAZING! The secret is the soil. From Australia
What do you use to fertilize?
@@jarrodschannel Hi Jarrod here in Australia we have a product called Seasol (complete) its a seaweed extract, works great.

New to this kind of soil building, trying to work out what to feed my baby fruit trees I've recently potted in a sand, peat, perlite, charcoal mix. I used a mix of Seasol and Charlie carp to water them in after transplanting. Been a couple weeks now and they're all looking great, haven't lost a a single leaf. So you do you just use seasol to fertilise your fruit trees? how often do you apply it? thanks
Great! Coco Coir is less expensive than peat moss in my area (USA West Coast), so that would work. How do you fertilize? Compost on top, etc.? Thanks!

I remember reading a similar article in Science mag I think back in the 90s that said researchers from a Michigan university have identified the mycorrhyxae fungi when looking at the whitish roots under an electron microscope. Otherwise it just looked like part of the root system.

Do a home comparison test .one pot compost one pot sandy lomy mix .I'm going to try it . there is nothing to loose and everything to gain

I mix Gary’s Top Pot and Acid Mix and fill all of my containers. So far my veggie plants and flower plants love it. Can’t wait to finish assembling my strawberry pallets and transplant my existing strawberries.

I work at a large garden center, most people just want what's easy without having to think about it very much. Only 1 out of a hundred (or less) understand when I explain that garden soil or potting mix isn't soil. They say I make things too complicated and go on buying composted wood chips and peat moss they think is soil. And then they wonder why their plants never really do well and they dump it out every year and buy more the next. They'll spend hundreds of dollars every year on bagged growing medium to refresh their pots and raised beds. Amazing. Thanks Gary. The Dr.Earth fertilizer is great though, buy it in winter. You can find it on sale
Gary’s comments @43:00 about the cooler winter cycle seems to be coming true. Here we are with some wet and cold winter 2023 blanketing the US/Canada.
I had great results with dill in the tropics, everyday highs of 85 or bit higher. Couldn't kill the dill. Didn't know about this soil, so grew in compost and clay, but eventually dill died I didnt water and neglected the plant. When it did grow, it was at least 5 ft high and bushy, lots of branches. Fresh dill was a world of difference when cooking.

Gary, what is your take on pouring hot boiling water unto the seed starter growing media to kill fungus gnat eggs?... of course, let it cool first before sowing the seeds. Also, there is a product called Mosquito Bits that I find effective in controlling fungus gnats wherein I mix a few of the granules with the dirt.
I feel so duped by the industry. For years I’ve been half growing , buying more bags of “dead stuff” buying more of their fertilizers, now I find out I’ve been doing it wrong and making them money... well no more. I’m going to educate people to this and hopefully help stop this perversion.
How is your plants since you changed over soil mix
I'm on pure sand here in Melbourne Australia and the native sand in my area is herrendous. It's hydrophobic and has no soil structure. Nothing is alive in it. I've had to add compost to it and it makes big difference, as does some clay, ashes, rock dust. We added 2 feet of wood chips down in one area and it's actually holding moisture there finally. I wouldn't ever add compost to heavy clay. It would just go anaerobic.
Shocking but if u watch every single overstating one of these videos you are trying to grow in the most perfect soul structure sand
@@jondoe5536 Update from a 3 year old comment, try and get in touch with an excavation company and try to get them to dump a load of clay on your lot. Lots of work to get it worked in but thoroughly worth it.
what about worm castings as a growing mixture. have not heard you mention it in any of the talks I've listened too yet
We typically don't use worm castings as a soil medium, as it is still in a highly organic form. Worm castings works very well as a fertilizer, and the is what we recommend using it for. It is also not very cost effective if you are looking to plant things in it, as a 25lb bag can cost you upwards of $20.
Do you recommend placing worm tea or castings only on top of the soil?

I would imagine "parts," so volume and not weight or mass because there are things that are more dense than others, such as sand being denser than peat moss
My trees in Florida made the best compost mixed with my native dirt..
I didn't know researching about gardening would lead me to the idea of dead bodies of relatives in my house or chopped off body parts. This guy is legendary.

Starts talking about soil...compost...and sand = Mind blown! I have been doing it completely wrong and my logic is completely backward to what Gary is talking about. I just planted a guava earlier this week and amended the hole with a bunch of compost. Urgh...I feel like uprooting all the trees in the ground and in containers. I need to seriously start rethink my soil mix. Gary, I am not local. Where can I find bulk pumice stone/sand to try and make my own mix?
You can try any building material store in your area, they might even have what is called "sandy loam", which, what we believe, is one of the best kinds of soil you can have.

@@SillyHerpFamily How old are your trees and plants? It really depends on how established they are.
@@GarysBestGardening I just purchased them about a month ago. Some have blooms and buds already and others are still only foliage. I am guessing they are probably 1-2 years old. Only been planted in their new containers between 3-5 weeks. I have about 8 semi-dwarf trees that I purchased in the past couple months.
@@SillyHerpFamily It would probably be a good idea to take them out and fix the soil, however, however you will probably be sacrificing the new blooms that are coming out, as those are some of the first things that go when you are fixing the soil of a plant. You can refer to our video on fixing plants in bad soil for more of an in depth discussion on this topic, it is one of our first videos and we have repeated it in our classes several times.
I just placed n order for my first avocado tree. I have clay soil n live in NorCal. I plan on planting the tree at the end of my yard. My neighbor’s yard is right behind that but with a lower grade, so my property is 1 1/2 feet higher with a retaining wall. Would you recommend I dig a hole n fill with sand for the tree? Any recommendations welcomed!
Can we use river sand? the kind of sand for building? Would plants grow in it?
I believe most Sands will work, with the exception of Beach sand, you might run into salt issues if you try using that type. - KC
How about basalt sand. The quarry close to us makes a #4 mason sand.

As we better our technology, we could have the options to zoom in to certain products. If you have an inquiry about a particular product we we could always tell you the name of it or refer you to a website with the information.
Cut an orange in half and put them on the soil. Each morning it will be covered with pill bugs. Drop bugs in dish soap water. Repeat.
What does this guy say to do about clay soil compaction?
If the fungus is depleting the plant of its sugar, then you'd have less sweet fruits going on fungus-infected plants - no?
Why can't you grow big trees on the beach then? You're saying if the tree was back from the ocean and watered all day, then it would grow to be as tall as it would in typical midwestern soil? What exactly is missing from the sand so they could do so?
He mentioned salt is the reason for beach sand not being a good medium. Anyways, likely the video on soil is the one you’d want to watch for more info.

i agree theres no humane way to kill a rat, or anything else.. how could you kill anything that ate your food when theres a supermarket down the road a life is a life the only real difference is size and situation, i dont discriminate against the small and poor yano i see them like i see kids.. infact caring for local possums (the "food" id be killing to eat one day) showed me just how un natural it was to eat animals when you dont have to, ignoring your conscious is sickly.. we were rats once upon a time lol i may be vegan and focused on self sufficiency but im not that desperate ill always find a more preventitive peaceful sollution cause i love the all animals, i dont even kill mosquitoz i cup them in my hand and blow them outside haha i get really pissed off if some kills something aswel i guess i just dont tolerate bullies :p we have to be reasonable and respectful of other species, theres actually a word called speciesism lol i am not speciesist, im a champ lol

Both of your views are a little extreme and unrealistic but the difference is that his views, although misguided, at least come from a place of empathy. You just went right to being a bully.
