I've listened to about 20 of your videos. I now know more about soil then almost all of the phds in the universities. Lol thank you so much. In reality everything you say should be common sense. In nature plants and trees grow in dirt. It just goes to show you that the majority of experts can be completely wrong about anything.
Gary is 100% right. I’ve been growing my orchids in clay pellets and pebbles for years instead of fir bark and never had any root rot and I can water them everyday in the summer. But when it came to Gardening, I’ve always given up because of fungus gnats and never had success. I did not realize it is the same concept for other plants. Recently changed all to inorganic media and am not having any issues with fungus gnats. I am excited to start gardening again. Thank you Gary!
I've been watching you all day for 3 days you're giving me life-changing information I've been trying to turn my property into an edible farm and I have no success my biggest problem is putting things in the ground and I have Clay you have totally got my mind changed as to what I'm going to do in a pot but I am a little confused at the what I'm going to do in the ground that's why I keep watching you I'm trying to get bits and pieces so that I can understand what I can really do obviously for all the planting I have to do I cannot afford to buy your medium I'm having 10 tons of sand delivered to my property on Wednesday I can mix Pearl light in holes and sand in Holes the pumice I cannot get it in bulkhead and affordable price cuz nobody locally sells it like that so basically I am left with I think Pete Moss sand,charcol and perlite in a clay hole does that make sense to you based on what you've shown me I can buy avocado tree take a hose rinse it all out plant it in sand,charcol perlite and peat moss in the hole in the clay hole cover it up with a top layer of mulch in wood chips and feed it some other nutrients as well now my concern is and my plugging up the sand if I'm putting mulch that's too fine on top of it I'm going to cut this off now so that I might get an answer I have lots of questions for you I'm very excited I have so much to do I have to start over with everything cuz everything's planted in dead stuff LOL

For the homeowner, you can make enough charcoal in your backyard webber bbq using empty large steel cans of tomatoes, or any large empty can. Stick open ends of 2 cans together makes a retort, fill with any hard biomass (DRIED tree limbs, bones, roots, bamboo ETC). Poke an icepick size hole in one can and pretendyou are roasting a large turkey. Make sure there is lots of fire in the webber. Burn for a couple of hours, cool overnight and you will have more than enough fro 2% char for your potting needs.

I've been using a bucket of water and swishing the root ball in it until the compost washes off. I can usually do 2 or 3 plants before it gets too muddy. Then I pour the bucket out onto something that needs watering and won't mind a bit of mulch. Is this a reasonable thing to do?
You can use the same method of repotting on all plants/ trees???

How would one do a fresh planting using sand on the bottom and compost on top? Percentages would be interesting to know.
gary my avocado tree lost all its leaves due to root rot so I pulled it out of the ground washed off its roots and repotted it in cactus mix . It's stopped dying off but also has no leaves ...........any ideas what else I can do to revive it ?
Hi Gary i watched one of your videos and you recommend "garden phos" to help with avocado root rot i bought some, any chance you could look at my channel and give some recommendations...mostly worried about the mixture and technique to inject into the tree trunk?? it is not in the directions...

Hello Gerry same thing happened to food industry in 1980s every body got advised low fat high sugar carbs diet and look the diabetes in the world. Even children’s are having fatty liver same as alcoholic liver with sugary drinks and cereal.
if the trees want sand why are the roots on top where all the organic matter is not disagreeing just a question. Everyone I talk to says not to use straight compost some say add 50% and others say 10 %
The feeder roots are on top. The top of the soil has plenty of oxygen so it isn't a problem on the top. It is a problem down lower where there is less oxygen.
I am not trying to shoot down the premise here that tree roots need to breathe. But how would anyone explain cases where trees are planted in parking lots. And these have maybe 5 sq Ft of uncovered ground. the rest is sidewalks and asphalt.

A 5x5 area isn't a small area. Concrete is porous. It is gravel, sand, and a binder.
You haven’t watched the video. There are some plants which do survive in low O2 environments and ones which are very sensitive. Your premise doesn’t assume anyone added compost in the planting hole
how can you garden organically without some compost I understand you don't want straight compost.
The compost (or organic mulch) belongs on the surface not in the soil, just like in a forest in nature.
@@jeremyrisher5400 that was my point exactly I never mix it in. Although I do know several people that use straight compost in their gardens and they are thriving and beautiful I personally don't do that because I've been taught otherwise but it works.
Well according to when I'm learning here the reason it works is because you're basically planting your plants in the food it's a temporary works it's working temporary if you go long-term it rots away
@@wanesweb like I mentioned earlier I don't use straight compost myself but I know several people that do and they know a lot more about gardening than I do and they've been doing it for years and they have no issues I'm not going to do that cuz I don't want to take the chance but it's working for them.
