Probabl the best videos I've seen about gardening.... BUT OMG that woman asking SOOOO many really SILLY questions, all the time... killed my vibe.
I had just said “No matter where or what “soil” I buy, it’s all just a bunch of sticks!!”. Now I find out, it’s true! My best growers are orchids in semi hydro- leka and spag moss. One is actual rocks and algae. It’s beautiful so I haven’t repot it in years.

I'm in Sacramento and planted a Jacaranda tree in clay soil that I heavily amended with a sandy multiple compost blend, old wood chip mulch I had there for 3 yrs, shredded paper and sawdust from tupelo tree stump I had ground up. I removed all the old roots of a 30+ft tupelo tree and raised the soil up with this native clay+sandy compost+aged woodchips+leaves+shredded paper and used a lawn toller to compress and level it out. It's by far my best soil. Easy to dig, rich, dark black, moist soil that can no matter much rain or water comes down drains in just over two minutes. Havent lost one plant because of the compost in the soil and I added a dwarf jacaranda, royal poinciana, lavendsr, rushia nana, wisteria, bougainvilleas. All the rain we got here up north didnt kill any of the plants in that soil unlike another tree I planted in my backyard that got root rot from the rain last winter when I planted in unamended native clay soil. I'm now experimenting with using red lava sand in mh backyard with my inground avocado and plumerias and red lava fines+peat moss+little finished compost in my potted plants.

just one suggestion, maybe you can ask the audience to keep their question for the end of the presentation. This lady seemed rude and kept interrupting your presentation. It is very annoying to hear someone keep on interrupting the flow of a presentation.
Thank you for your comment. For the class on this day, the lady you are referencing was actually the only person attending the class. This made it feel more of like a discussion for her than an actual class. We apologize for any interruptions that occurred throughout the class.

Very balanced information... Clay pellets are very good. I feed my citrus vermacompost that has been aerated for a minimum of 4 days. If I were to plant my citrus in 100% vermacompost it would die over time.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, this is fascinating. I am curious, you said that the peat/pumice mix can be used in the ground. How would that work with a tree in a clay soil? You would dig the hole and fill it with peat/pumice only or reuse some of the clay too?

I learn much from your lecture Sir You are a knowledgeable person it’s good to see more people who impart knowledge of wisdom . In Canada I have to learn different methods. My late Father was good coconut and rice farmer but he also planted other fruit trees and at the same time cared native chicken and tilapias in our fish pond . We visited Laguna nursery before we retired from DAR mas maganda sa aton .maybe after Pandemic I will visit Philippines Sorry we are on luck down ..

Another great video Gary. I will be slowly taking out all the dead wood compost from my raised garden beds and replacing with sandy soil including some peat moss. Is it OK to use sand sourced from the beach?
IMHO the sand from the beach depends on what type of water the beach is on. If it is a fresh water lake the beach sand would be fine because there is no salt in it. Same thing for a beach along a river bank. A beach on a salt water ocean would have salt in the sand. If you could rinse the salt out of the sand, before putting the sand into your garden or pots, then it would be fine.

Nice explanation of soil, but very annoying to have that woman who we can not hear, constantly interrupting. If you allow that, you really should turn the camera on her or tell her to shut up while filming.
For this particular class, this lady was the only participant. She felt it was more of a discussion between her and Gary, so she felt it acceptable to interrupt as Gary continued his class. Sorry for any inconvenience this caused.
Thank you Gary for the subject. I agree to the point of no compost for trees, but can it still be applied to a vegetable? For example, I hear much about adding a lot of compost to soil when plant asparagus. It is known that asparagus have a long deep root, which could be as long as 3 feet, in its long life. Should we only add compost on the top of soil for asparagus? Or vegetable prefers different soil from that of a tree.

What about using renewable coconut coir instead of peat moss? How does the decomposition time differ?
Other than being heavier, is it OK to use Coarse sand+peat moss instead of pumice?

@@GarysBestGardening I may have missed it but I don't remember hearing you mention vermiculite in any of the lectures on soil. What are your thoughts on a sand, peat moss and vermiculite combo soil mix for containers? I don't have a problem with using sand as it is more cost effective for me than pumice rock and I like the added stability it gives my containers as they (containers) is my method of choice for gardening. But I am also concerned with water retention as summers can get very hot.
@@msfullroller Vermiculite is an okay substitute, but it doesn't seem to be as aerating as pumice and sand. It will definitely help with moisture retention and provide a healthy medium for your plants.

You can add Peatmoss and Pumice to help improve drainage. -KC
Pumice is hard to find , can I substitute with more perlite?
Can trees be transplanted once they have been planted in clay soild & compost? I planted mine about 3 weeks ago on a raised bed, but I now after watching this, I'm thinking I should till the raised bed with your soil or sand or pumice. I don't want slow growing plants that are just bound to die Lol

Hey Gary. I believe I'm having the same problem with one of my citrus trees as you mentioned in the presentation. The tree I planted now has a couple dozen leaves and is quite twiggy. I believe my soil is clay/sandy clay, do you have any suggestions to get my tree going?
It depends on how old the tree is. If it is a young tree (1-3 years old) you can dig it up, wash ALL of the soil off, and replant it in soil that is 100% mineral, sand is preferred. Just make sure that you cover the tree for a couple weeks with shade cloth, as bare rooting put the plant in a shock state. If the tree is older, you can leave it in the ground and dig out one side of the dirt where the tree is. You can then fill this hole with 100% sand or pumice. Then wait a month or 2 and repeat with the other side.
Gary, a youtuber called Jake Mace moved from arizona to canada, he is used to planting into the native clay, but hes in a prestine wooded area near the coast now and he dug into the forest floor and he couldnt find the soil, how would he plant his fruit trees in that? i asked Pete K from Green dreams florida who is a permacuture designer what he would do and he said he would just plant into the duff, what would you suggest because i imagine if he tried to plant down in the top soil all the duff would just suffocate the trees or cause collar rot or trunk rot as the surface settled, he would deffinatly need to plant high and dry.. but how.. lol
So what is the formula for good container "Soil"?
sandy soil has no plant food so how do you suggest is the protocol for that
It is the same protocol as to what happens in nature. In nature, dead matter falls above the soil line and decomposes. This forces the nutrients to travel downwards with water. We recommend using any organic fertilizers or composts, and applying them to the surface of the soil near the base of the tree. Dr. Earth is a very good brand that we frequently recommend.

So if this is true why is so much vegetation growing naturally in very clay rich soil. Also don't plants need nutrients and minerals? Where do they get those from with this kind of soil?
How can I purchase this type of soil? I have raised bed garden beds. How do I change the soil?
Depending on where you are located, we recommend calling/stopping by our store. How big is your raised bed? With changing the soil, we don't recommend to mix it, if you can, replace all the old soil. -KC
If grass needs low oxygen and palms are grass why is it too wet in the U.S for palm dates?

Vrinda Bhalla just buy sand, and mix it 50/50 with your native soil (assuming it has too much clay)
Really any building material store. Just make sure not to get any topsoil, because that is what they will try to sell you, which will have quite a bit of mulch in it. Pure sand or sandy loam is the best.

There usually aren't any rules about that, it is possible that they just might not want to go through the hassle of buying a new soil. The ID numbers are #100-01010 (Top Pot) #100-01011 (Acid Mix).
