Exactly this, I could not see the pitches from the center field camera because they were so darn far zoomed out to show those ads. And the gimmick umpire camera was terrible and if it did work the closed captioning blocked the action.

My god, finally someone has noticed! Thank you so much for this short take. MLB cameramen don't know how to watch baseball. They love their cameras waaay more than the game. It's always a close up, constantly. On the pitcher, the batter, even the fucking ball! Who puts their entire focus on the ball when watching a game, really? Thank you
No idea if this is a MLB fan thing, but i really hope you understand these people are basic workers who do a job and that the footage is decided upon, shown live, by their boss or their bosses boss.
Whenever you see "directed by" for a sports broadcast and wonder what it means....this is an example. This was poor direction and production. Could not agree more.
The TBS scoreboard is horrendously designed too. Everything about their broadcast sucks. The game has passed Bob Costas by. He needs to retire and get some good broadcasters back into MLB. It's gotten to the point where unless it's a close game late, I'm not tuning into any game on TBS. ESPN doesn't care for baseball at all anymore but at least their broadcasts do the bare minimum
The sportscasters for tigers infians put me to sleep, the bases logo always looks like someone is on second base, and the pitchers name or batters name shows only sometimes. Its been really awful baseball production.
People are saying the big networks should just use each team's regular seasons announcers for playoffs, but even that's not enough. It's not just the announcers. Every team's crew does ~150 games a year. They know how to shoot a game, and how to direct the live feed. Every time I watch a regular season game on ESPN, TBS, Fox, Apple TV, etc, it feels like amateur hour, even when they use great commentators like Wayne Randozzo, because the rest of the crew just isn't cutting it.
I will give bob credit on one thing. He made a great point about Staton not getting pinch run for in 6th and then what happens. Wouldn't have mattered no run score chance that inning. Staton comes up in next at bat and hits the game winning home run
The Mets - Phillies games were broadcast as though it was an epic battle that would decide the fate of the galaxy. They really should go back through some old baseball playoff vids and see how Vin Scully did things.
Costas is the greatest example demonstrating narration and live play-by-play are completely different skill sets. He narrates live games instead of calling them. He forces poetic waxing into everything so hard. It can make for some really awkward sounding calls at times.
I hate "Trying too hard" camera work. Another one that bothers me is in tennis, when they have a close up of the player's face until the MICRO SECOND before the serve. Sometimes the ball is already hit by the time they go to the regular wide shot.
Costas is not a Yankee fan, rather he is a lifelong Cardinals fan. That said, Bob Costas is the biggest fan of Bob Costas. His smarmy style and insatiable need to constantly talk is unbearable for true baseball fans. He needs to retire and spare us his obnoxiosness.
I remember the movie "Moneyball" deliberately doing a shot like the one you mentioned about how it looks like the ball was going to go 400+ feet. Then the "twist" was nope, it was a lazy fly ball and their season was over. Difference here is that was done for dramatic reasons and to tell a story, this was just bad camera work.
I had to turn off Fox's telecast tonight. They seem to be taking lessons from ESPN's producers.. closeup of pitcher's face, manager in dugout, closeup of batter's face, closeup of the OTHER manager in dugout, pitch.😖
I'm 43. My entire life we've had Bob Costos, for a variety of sporting events. Can we move on from this guy? Old people should be required to retire to give the younger talent their chance.
I was an excellent teacher. Teacher of the year winner, keynote speaker etc., until I wasn’t. But had to be gently removed. Father Time wins every time. Bob needs to listen to people who care about him.
I've not heard much of modern Bob Costas (heck, I keep thinking he retired from announcing like 10-20 years ago), but for what it's worth, I do recall him sounding more than a little butthurt when the Diamondbacks ripped apart the Dodgers at the start of last year's NLDS
I was just going to comment that if you really want to see Bob at his absolute worst, just get him going on one of his leftist woke rants. He’s always used his armchair as a podium for the extreme political left. Very unclassy.
Some of it is poor direction from the truck, cueing a less advantageous shot, and some of it is poor work on the part of the camera operators. If the only shot you're getting of a play at the plate is a close-up of the runner, rather than a more panoramic shot showing the play as it develops, you're hamstrung anyway. But I'm spoiled. I'm used to the stellar coverage of the Mets on SNY.
I did pick a few of these last night, specially the "hit" to center field. My thoughts: where was he doing at that time, pouring some coffee, I don't know but Costas looked awful in that play. As for the other plays I guess they often do that and in the heat of the moment I get anoyed and just follow the game afterwards. When you put them together like that is when I realize it's very bad.
It was horrible. Especially at the end when the yanks were celebrating. They zoomed in on judge and Stanton instead of the whole team jumping at the pitchers mound. So weird.
The cameraman losing track of the ball does bother me a bit, but not nearly as much as the closeup shots if players running that provide no context whatsoever of what is actually happening on the play.
MLB production requires the same amount of awareness of actually being on the field. You need to know where the ball has to be thrown in every scenario before the pitch. With every other sport, you just have to pan left or right depending on which way the play is going...
MLB fans might need a little help and it’s no surprise. I see people blaming the camera men like they’re the ones who decide what is shown LIVE as they are recording it😂😂😂
Serious question - is this not the KC crew? Or are the Tbs guys shipped around to games and they just suck? Like could it be that the KC cam crew just isn’t that solid? I’m genuinely curious cuz you’re right this is abysmal
No, the KC main broadcaster sounds like he’s one step away from a nursing home, so they bring in the “elite professionals” like Bob Costas who has always been a blight on baseball broadcasting. Ron Darling is one of the good ones though. No idea why they have to bring in Costas to ruin it for everyone.
@@Johnfisher12345 that’s not what I’m talking about tho. Ignoring Costas, the camera work is really terrible here so I was wondering if that’s due to the camera crew just being not up to scuff somehow.
One reason baseball is hard to watch is the Jump Cut after batter hits ball that goes behind pictcher to ball cam. Cam should be behind Batter in my opinion.
Someone below commented on a possible deal with Nike on the home plate close ups, but the other theme I saw with where the cameras focused was spots in the outfield with large advertisements on fences etc... just a theory they either want to arract more and better advertising fees covering the games or they were offered a bonus for doing whatever they could for the advertisers extra getting screen time. Just a guess

No idea if this is a MLB fan thing, but i really hope you understand these people are basic workers who do a job and that the footage is decided upon, shown live, by their boss or their bosses boss.
Bob costas will always be famous for getting an eye infection in Sochi. Watching that get worse and worse was hilarious
oh shit! thanks for reminding me of this
Whenever you see "directed by" for a sports broadcast and wonder what it means....this is an example. This was poor direction and production. Could not agree more.
The problem is the directing not the camera work. Director is the one that is calling those camera shots.
The camera guy went home, ate dinner, had a drink and went to bed thinking about tomorrow.
Love your vids!
I think I hurt myself laughing at that Costas call! As a NY-native Mets' fan, I think he was doing a subtle tribute to Phil Rizzuto ...
Its a shame. Costas is legendary. Hes obviously lost it, but we can't forget how well he did back in his prime
I muted the tbs broadcast and used the yankees radio broadcast as audio. Much better lol
Solid take. The internet agrees. Either shots to get the logos in frame or a producer that isnt paying attention.
Bob Costas is a legend but my god it was unbearable
a legend in his own mind.
I thought I was going crazy but every time I switched to this game I felt like something was off. Glad to know I’m not crazy
That has to be AI Bob Costas. He sounds exactly the same as he sounded when I watched baseball, back in the early 90's.
I hate "Trying too hard" camera work. Another one that bothers me is in tennis, when they have a close up of the player's face until the MICRO SECOND before the serve. Sometimes the ball is already hit by the time they go to the regular wide shot.
Incredible that this is the same network that had such stellar broadcasting standards when it produced WCW
Could have fooled me, the way he kept going on and on and on about the Yankees that entire broadcast.
After watching the Fox NL broadcasts especially, you really feel Bob's weird ghoul living in a basement vibes
This is what happens when you purposely don't hire the most qualified applicant.
Really good analysis
Last year they had the Spanish broadcast for these games and they were so much better. This season they were on Unimas and still better the TBS.
Oh my gosh! I'm a broadcaster? I didn't know if I was or not! Baseball? All right, then, baseball!!
"Mark McGwire-Grace laces one up the middle right left outfield side. Oh. He's out?"
Can someone explain what “an atmospheric shot” is? I have never heard a producer or director ask for one.
Totally agree and felt this series was way off on energy and cameras. What's the reasoning?
Bob Costas needs to worry less about trump and more on calling a game
I was just going to comment that if you really want to see Bob at his absolute worst, just get him going on one of his leftist woke rants. He’s always used his armchair as a podium for the extreme political left.
Very unclassy.
@@jeffbrooks8288no one likes right wing policies or their propaganda spewing candidates
This is the way it has always been on all tv 📺.
So weird.
Game four wasn’t any better. They cut out the key hits that set up the big hits.
The cameraman losing track of the ball does bother me a bit, but not nearly as much as the closeup shots if players running that provide no context whatsoever of what is actually happening on the play.
Costas was not tolerable. He had to remind us 5 MILLION times of Judges postseason struggles. I mean, EVERY single at bat.
I don’t think Bob does well calling baseball. Basketball sure, football maybe, baseball no. 😂😂
MLB production requires the same amount of awareness of actually being on the field. You need to know where the ball has to be thrown in every scenario before the pitch. With every other sport, you just have to pan left or right depending on which way the play is going...
Bob Costas is embarrassing himself
MLB fans might need a little help and it’s no surprise. I see people blaming the camera men like they’re the ones who decide what is shown LIVE as they are recording it😂😂😂
TBS is not going to do better because in their minds, they're doing a perfect job covering the MLB postseason.
I’ve never actually noticed that a broadcast was bad until this series…tbs needs be removed from broadcasting big games
To be fair to TBS, the Yankees are playing. Of course it's unwatchable.
😂😂😂
Awwww, your team must be sitting at home right now.
@@saygoodnighttothebadguy ROFL good one bro! U have no idea. Been an A's fan since I was a little kid. My team doesn't even exist anymore.
Yankees are baseball
Ive hated the camera work of baseball games for years. They should show the WHOLE FIELD when the ball is in play. Save the closeups for replays.
The director is probably Gen Z who watches everything on a tiny phone, so "zoom in on everything!" And coming soon: "shoot it in vertical mode!"
mmm, no.. probably not 🤦🏻♂️
One reason baseball is hard to watch is the Jump Cut after batter hits ball that goes behind pictcher to ball cam. Cam should be behind Batter in my opinion.
This makes me pine for days of Mel Allen and Red Barber on radio.
The local sports radio guys in NYC are defending Bob Costas and I was wondering way?
The 2000s called and they want their score graphic back
At least we have plenty of footage of Ohtani eating sunflower seeds.
Joe Buck is THE VOICE of the postseason. I hate that he decided he was done.
Bob sounds like an AI doing play by play. No emotion and says random things.
Get Bob a phone book to sit on so he can see
