I was at the 2006 game. Probably the best regular season game I've ever been to. Fun bit of trivia: That matchup was the first time in MLB history that a pitcher with 300+ wins faced a hitter with 700+ HR.
Baseball fans absolutely love coming up with the silliest records. "OH THIS WAS ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN HISTORY A BATTER HITS HIS FOURTH HOME RUN IN THE 9TH INNING IN THE 5TH GAME OF THE WORLD SERIES!!!"
More Maddox content, please. My favorite pitcher of all time. I grew up watching the Cubs on WGN, as it was one of the only two networks (TBS being the second) that had broadcast regular MLB games on cable in the late 80's to early 90's. Mark Grace, Ryne Sandberg, Rick Sutcliffe, the Prof, Mitch "wild thing" Williams, and Andre Dawson!
Maddux at 40yrs old, holding a Bonds-led Giants team scoreless while completing 8innings? Most young pitchers are coming out after 5 innings these days and not being allowed to go a 3rd time through the order. Maddux is incredible
I'm old enough to have watched a bunch of these games, and lemme tell ya, you kept a tally in your head of "how many guys till Bonds is up? b/c each time the game hung in the balance.
I remember early 2000s baseball...barry bonds vs troy percival. Percival threw a 99 mph fastball shoulder high and 6 inches inside almost as a pseudo brushback.. Bonds turned on it and crushed it over the right field wall
I always thought baseball and boxing were similar but for different reasons like reaction time and how hard it is to play baseball or fight for 36 minutes
I don't really know how baseball gets back to pitchers that can pitch rather than just trying to throw 100 every single pitch. THAT is what is killing arms mroe and more and more. Not the pitch clock, not the specific pitches themselves, and not that hitters are all of a sudden better.
It's a combination of two aspects. One is that pitchers are throwing very hard these days. But one of the biggest issues is actually baseball pitchers are throwing far more in high pressure situations BEFORE they go professional. So by the time they get to the minors and majors, their arm has already been through a great deal of stress. This is actually an issue that basketball players also deal with these days as they deal with more injuries because the play much more before they reach the NBA. So yeah, throwing hard matched with throwing more growing up and you get the massive amounts of injuries.
Bonds was almost like a Tony Gwynn with power 💥 😂. Best all around hitter I have ever seen. I am a METS fan,but Juan Soto(and I am elated to have him),couldn’t hold his jock strap 😂.
Actually through their first 6 seasons and roughly the same number of games played Soto had 60 more HRS, 30 points higher BA, 140 more walks, 70 higher OBP and 60 higher SLG. Bonds had less SO, more SB and was a much better fielder. But as offensive player Soto is better unquestionably. So saying he couldn't hold his jock strap is simply wrong based on their first 6 seasons. Stats don't lie. There's also that other detail that I'm forgetting...can you remind me? I mean it's significant right? I just can't remember what it is. I know it's important though...it was like sorta a whole big deal back in the day and completely changed the game...can you remind my what it was? Ya know whatever that thing that Bonds and other players at that time did that was so significant? Do you remember what it was? I mean you did see him play so you must remember right? I know it was on the news and stuff and there were like hearings in Congress. Perhaps you heard of it?
Roger Clemens was better than Gregg Maddux by a significant margin. 139 bWAR > 106 bWAR. Clemens also struck Bonds out twice in one game during a season where he only struck out 41 times.
@ the title calls Maddux the best player of his generation, he wasn’t the best by stuff, routinely was pulled from games in postseason when his team needed him. Johnson and Clemens clearly were the best pitchers of that era to anyone alive, it’s revisionist history cuz roid convo. He was at best around Pedro.
@ I think Peak Pedro was better than anyone round that era, even better than Peak Randy Johnson. Pedro was breaking records non-stop in just 2 seasons and he automatically won you games, even in the postseason… he saved the Red Sox from elimination, *in the postseason.*
Check out Barry Bonds’ stats online. His Batting Average isn’t even that bad. Barry Bonds had insane OBP and drew walks like crazy and avoided striking out. He’s Ted Williams on absolute Crack…
I always hated Maddux. Bonds was my favorite player since his first day in MLB. This match up may be the best chess game ever in MLB. I'm 51 now. I'm a lifetime Cardinals fan. These 2 were most probably the best that I ever saw.

Bro... How many batters in history have 700+ HR? 4- Of course that would be exceedingly rare.

A video like this about how Chipper Jones owned Randy Johnson would be cool
I love how this isnt about their stuff or ability, its about their heads. more young players need to be taught this skill.
And Barry had a huge head. Literally and figuratively.
@ that’s pretty funny😂
Imagine Barry Bonds numbers if he didn't lose full seasons to intentional walks
I don’t care about the steroids, they all were on em. Bonds is my goat
Or cheating. He could have been the best of all time ...
Playoff Barry. Less than average
@@doocies not in 2002

As a lifelong Greg Maddux fan this video was absolutely beautiful. Thank you.

This is a great essay and very satisfying to watch.
Lovely analysis
Thank you for stating that he is the best hitter of all time. There is no question.

Id much rather watch a guy like Greg maddux then a guy who throws 102mph

Barry vs elite pitching in the playoffs is a less than average hitter

People love to bring up steroids for Barry Bonds but not amphetamines with Willy Mays 🤡🤡
Or sign-stealing for Hank Aaron

Greg didn’t

Clemens and Johnson were so much better than Maddux

Barry basically had two hall of fame careers. One in Pittsburgh and one in San Francisco
The one in frisco he cheated and he’s not in the HOF…😆😄🙈

Natural vs steroids.
So, HRs and SBs are the only factors that define the 'best hitter of all time'? I dunno....
