I have been a fan of Nanci’s for a long time, but have never seen a performance from this far back. Her style of singing, playing and songwriting was already well established. And she got better and better. My musical tastes run far and wide, but after more than 70 years, Nanci is right at the top of my list of favorites.

James, these videos just barely fill the hole in my heart left by Nanci’s passing. I discovered Nanci totally by chance (the Chieftans album) and marveled at her brilliance. She didn’t start out good and get better. She started out brilliant and kept on shining. To see that raw brilliance in these videos is just amazing. You have my deepest gratitude for sharing them.

Nancy is the only artist I can clearly remember exactly the first song of hers I ever heard and what mile marker I was passing on a late night trip on a lonely highway. Looking For The Time (Workin' Girl). As I was on my way to Deadwood, SD, I will always be grateful to that unknown student DJ at a small college station who may have needed a smoke break leading to the full side A of A Fair Summer Evening . When Deadwood, SD played next I knew I had to get this album asap. It lead to finding a record store in Rapid City the next morning. She remains a must listen on any road trip.

“A hot night in August - so long to the goddess”. What a sweet and special gift Nanci was to this world. She faced her many illnesses privately with such dignity and grace. It is so uplifting to see so many people here who love her and keep her music and memory alive every day. She was a Goddess indeed.🩷

I first met her at the '79 Kerrville Folk Festival and fell in love immediately. She's only a year older than I am and it sure hurt when she passed.

Isnt it wonderful when a gem like this just pops up out of nowhere! Discovered her in England in the bottom of a basket of budget CD's in long gone Woolworth. Since then always a light in my woods.. Why she popped up in my feed could be the 'fault' of Salt Lake City . Do listen to the wonderful Kelli Moyle ( resident there) a similar shy star in the making here on the Tube. 😊

If I’m having big feelings and I don’t know what to do with them, or struggling to process them I turn to Nanci. I sang her songs to my babies (who are now 13 & 14) and they remember everything 🙏

Some great songs that I have not heard before until seeing this video.
Glad that Nanci knew grew up in the 1960's and 70's in hearing some of the lyrics to these songs about being in high school in the late 1960's . Songs I can relate to of this time period as I grew up around the same time.

In 1974/75 there was a house converted into a bar behind Inner Sanctum Record store. Nancy would perform there. A friend, Tom Pitman, would accompany her. I would show up early and be the only person in the room listening. How she performed in the beginning was how she did it her whole career. It was her way. And the critics that later claimed that she was putting on an act and faking it can all go to hell.

I have never seen an image of Nanci when she was so young. Typically her videos were made when she was in her 30's. Here she looks like she might still be in high school (she would have been 23 or 24 at the time). Thank you for this video, I am so happy to see her in this different time. A different way to see and hear Nanci.

Thanks for this. She looks so young here and pretty & cute But she has good songs she can communicate them she has her personality & way of speaking directly to the audience. Her guitar playing will improve in time & she will hone her skills to become one of the best in the business across folk country & even some pop songs. I saw her here in Ireland in 1987 and 1996 I think. I loved her live shows & a few of her albums have helped me through some difficult times over the years
Lovely to see this going back to 77. Thanks for posting. Nanci we miss you may God be good to you & bless you & keep you

That's about when I was strumming and writing songs, and had that kind of hair too! Thanks for uploading. The 60's and 70's were my formative years and I will always remember them as a time of much singing and playing despite hard times for my family raising me. We didn't have much, but back then we didn't need much except food, a roof, and for me, an acoustic guitar! Sorry for your loss of this wonderful person and musician. Thank you whomever had the camera to film Nanci and for sharing.

Pls help with lyrics to Looking Back is Easy When it's raining at 16:30!! to her first love.
Johnny was my dreamer when i was twelve
Read me history books his mama kept high upon the shelf.
Was a lanky boy with bony knees
We could laugh away the hours and the troubles with our dreams
Looking back is easy when its raining
I can let the thunder roar. Turning back the pages
A little like auld lang syne. Listen to the bluebird at your door.
Now we were sixteen back in sixty nine,
We were bouncing off the walls with the lightning in our eyes.
There were dances in the gym each friday night
Where the sisters lit their candles for the boys who lost their (fight?)
Looking back is easy when it's raining.
I can hear the thunder roar, let it roar.
Turning back the pages a little like auld lang syne.
Listen to the bluebird at your door.
Memories are shadows when the skies are blue,
You and I were more than just a swingin through?
Johnny was my dreamer and a boy who died
--heart of a man with whom i'd love to share my life.
Looking back is easy when its raining
I can hear the thunder roar.
Turning back the pages a little like auld lang syne.
Listen to the bluebird at your door.
Looking back is easy when its raining
I can hear the thunder cry.
Turn back the pages and the ghost will die
Fade away our ghosts to save our smiles
Johnny always said we would desert him in time.
He was just a bluebird singing auld lang syne.
Johnny always said I would desert him in time.
He was just a blubird singing auld lang syne.

This was about 12 years before I had ever heard of Nanci Griffith. She was quite different looking back then, Hawaiian shirt, faded blue jeans, bushy long hair as well as Budweiser chugging, cig smoking and talking about partying and too much alcohol. Interesting though to see her before she became the dress wearing, white anklet socks and Mary Jane shoe wearing Nanci. To tell you the truth I liked seeing this. It made me see a different side to her. Enjoyable.

Alabama Soft Spoken Blues and I Remember Joe were on her first album (1978) called There's A Light Beyond These Woods. Near the end of the video she makes mention of Michael's Song, also from the album but then sings another song instead. Unfortunately her first three albums are not on Spotify and probably not on other streaming services either. Her last album, Intersection, was on Spotify but then taken off, but it is still on TH-cam music. There seems to be no consistency to what albums are put onto which platform. I understand it may have to do with rights and contracts but it would be really nice if all of her albums were on the streaming services.
Her first four albums were pure gold in my opinion. I didn't know who Nanci Griffith was until 1988 when I saw her on TV singing Never Mind which is from her sixth album. I still cannot find the video I saw. When I first saw and heard her I was blown away. I bought whatever albums she released. I didn't know much about her because in those days it was much harder to do the research we can do today. In the early 90's I went to Nashville and was thrilled to find her first four albums in a record store. I had no idea these albums even existed. I couldn't wait to get the albums home and listen. And I loved those albums. I followed her career for decades and bought every album. Saw her and John Prine (with only their guitars) in the mid-nineties. I enjoyed her music throughout the years, but there was something really unique about her first four albums.

If you're any sort of fan of Nanci, you'll know this is her... 100% and without any doubt.

@SuperPepzz What expertise do you have on this subject? What evidence makes you believe that this is fake? Present the evidence that makes you believe that. I mean, what message are you trying to convey? Why? What is it that you are trying to say? Why? What point is there to disparaging Nanci with empty accusations? To draw attention to yourself? If you need attention, strive for good attention buddy. And remember, sometimes silence is golden. And with regards to accusations with no evidence, less is more.
Just about everyone else on here comments out of love for her. Where does you're comment come from?
"And if we poison our children with hatred, then a hard life is all that they'll know."
If that line describes any part of you, then I'm sorry for you. And me.
