    Is it really a good idea to put a "Stop Loss" amount? Because when you withdraw (by setting a stop loss amount) when the stock is going down, you are basically incurring a loss. Whereas if you just wait until the stock goes back up (which I was told it usually does) and hopefully get the "Take profit" amount.
    Am I making sense or are there factors that I'm not taking into account?
    PS: Not an expert. Just my understanding. Im a novice at this.

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey there. I'm also just learning, so please just take this as my opinion rather than the total truth. Yes, the value may go back up and then hit your take profit. but it could also keep going down for hours or weeks or months, and then you have to either cut the trade off at an even lower price, or wait for a potentially very long time before it makes its way back up again. During that time, you could have been using the money for a more productive trade... It's something people are always trying to balance - how do i not lock in my losses unnecessarily, but on the other hand, how do i know when to cut off a losing trade and use my money elsewhere...
      A 'stop loss' is basically a very basic tool which can help with 'risk management' - which is the name given to all of the actions you can take to safeguard your capital and not incur very heavy losses. (Remember most new retail traders lose much more than they make).
      There's a lot to be said for patience and waiting until your trades are in the green, but traders will learn technical analysis, and fundamental analysis to back up their theories of why an asset is going to do well - they don't just wait blindly thinking "Well surely everything goes back up eventually" - there's no certainty in that way, so they do their best to use analysis to pick which assets to buy and inform their decisions about where it could be going next. They plan their entry points into a trade and their exits from trades accordingly. The more you know, the better really. (At least I think so!)

    Hi - Have you done a video showing an actual trade using leverage at all ? What I mean by this is that, when you go long or short, and you set a stop loss, sometimes it does not hit the stop loss figure you had on the chart yet it stops you out - this is because of the spread so how do you ensure you stop out exactly where you want to rather than prematurely ? what figure do you have to use - is it whatever figure stop loss you have then MINUS say 10 ? thanks

    Hey! I have a question. If i buy an eft like the (VIT) or (VOO) with 1x leverage, i still get the cfd symbol. But it’s still says its no fees in weekends or normal days. But does that mean i buy the etf with the same consept as i own it myself, and get the same profits like i would without it beeing bought as a cfd? Cus i have no leverage, so why is it still bought like an dfc?
    And another question. Can i hold an cfd for as long as i want? I want to buy an eft with 1x leverage. And i know there is no limit on the hold time on index or mutual founds or eft’s that are bought in your name. But i dont know when it get bought like a cfd…

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you use leverage you'll have overnight and weekend fees. it depends how long you plan to hold the trade open. if youre asking that though, I'm assuming (possibly jncorrectly) that you're a beginner. when I started, I got into a lot of trouble using leverage as its shocking how quickly you can make or more importantly lose money on the trade. the problem is that when the trade is losing money most new people panic, make bad decisions and end up losing their money. it happens to the majority of people statistucally... in my experience that was true.

    Hi Tom, very clear and concise. I did notice that l although your three Amazon trades were taken out at exactly the same time, the x1 leverage opened at 1777.34, whilst the leveraged options were 1777.25. Why is that? Is it because the spread fee is actually slightly less for an un-leveraged long? I thought all spread fees were the same.

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe because the CFDs are just mathematical instruments so they can open instantly as database entries, whereas the underlying asset takes some time to actually open due to the order book? Therefore it was delayed and the buy price was different... I don't think they charge any difference in spreads, or surely we'd see that stated somewhere.

    • @SocialTrading

      Thanks :) Leverage amplifies the size of the trade you make. So if you trade $100 with X10 leverage, it's like you're trading $1000 worth of the asset. There's no way to have no money, and just use leverage to make trades.

  • @marksmanm4325
    @marksmanm4325 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Tom, thanks for your vids. I wanted to clarify, if you use $500 on a higher leverage, ie, x5, that means that the loses will be amplified, in other words, the rate of losing $500 is greater due to the increased leverage (as it would be the same as investing $2500). Is this the only thing that will be lost, ie, only the $500 (+the fee of keeping the leverage overnight etc) or can you exceed the loss further? This was my fear but from what I understand, it just means that if the market goes against you, the $500 could go quicker than if you had used your own capital with x1 leverage. Is this correct?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really good question... So you have 0 available balance and it let you open a CFD trade with so that 100% of your balance is used, and there are overnight fees due on your open trade? Hmmmmm. I'm not sure... How long has the trade been open? What's happened so far? IF you look at the fourth item down in the list of topics here: www.etoro.com/customer-service/help/343575/what-are-overnight-fees/ you can see that it says they take the fees from your available balance. It's been so long since i manually traded that I can't remember what happens if there's no available funds...

    Btw if you are trading with leverage and you close all of your positions within a day then you don't pay any of these fees (night or weekend ones)? Is there anything else that you need to be careful about with this type of trading for example is there a limited amount of trades you can make?

    What I don't understand is the fee. If your amount is 500 usd, you chose 5x leverage and the cost is 0.59 usd/day it means they borrowed you 2500 usd. Then you can buy cfd from 3000 because you had 500 usd. Am I right? Or you are not able to invest your own money?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can stay open indefinitely as far as I'm aware, but you'll be paying those little 'rollover' fees every day you hold the trade open - they're very small, but over a long enough time, they can be significant. I think there are a variety of reasons people sell - they suddenly need the money for something else out in the real world and have to close their position even though it's at a loss (very common with newer traders who haven't thought it through...), or they might just fear that the trade is going to lose even more money in future, so they close it now to avoid an even bigger loss down the road. There's an awful lot of pyschological pressure which the new trader experiences which is really hard to deal with - it usually takes people time and experience to handle it well.

      I genuinely don't know how they can afford to absorb people's losses with the 'negative balance protection' if that's what you're meaning. I find it quite incredible too... Maybe it's just that the value of the marketing opportunity the guarantee provides them outweighs the losses they need to absorb from people blowing their accounts...

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      leverage increases your position size - so if youre used to calculating profit based on the amount of untis you've bought, you'll see that when you open a new trade and use leverage it just increases the units you're buying. you can calculate from that but will have to take rollover fees into account. it'll show you the active profit or loss on that trade in your portfolio for as long as the trade is live.

    There are also CFDs with fee refunds. Can you please explain how they apply?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically, if you look at the list on the fees page, some assets offer refunds for holding them overnight... So, instead of a negative number in the fees column, it adds a positive number. I think they can switch though, so something which offers a refund at one time may not offer it later on. The trader 'Grepod' in my portfolio is the only one I'm copying who currently actually has a positive number in the 'fees' column in my portfolio :) I'm not sure exactly which instrument has been giving him the refunds though, as he's been mainly trading ETFs, and I just checked the fees page, and they're no giving refunds. I'd have to do some digging around to see what's been happening there...
      Here's the fees page:

    Hi guys I am currently long on a CFD for DJ30 using 20x leverage in eToro and I am planning to hold this long term. Is this a good idea? I want to re invest my dividends and let compounding interest do it's magic. Based on my calculations the fees will be covered by the gains and dividends however I am worried that I missed something specially on compound interest since I am using 20x leverage technically I am borrowing eToros money so does this mean I will pay the compounding interest and loose money instead of gaining? please share your ideas.

    1 question. Do overnight fees change if your position goes up? for example: i buy silver cfd, it sais my overnight fee is 0.17 eur and weekend 0.50. Then silver goes up 100% the next month, are my overnight fees still same or do i have to pay more now?

    • @SocialTrading
      @SocialTrading  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. On this page:
      www.etoro.com/customer-service/help/1121836682/how-are-the-overnight-fees-on-stocks-calculated/
      It does say that :
      "For leveraged BUY stock positions and SELL stock positions, the daily fee is calculated based on the size of the trade (in units), as follows:
      BUY Position: Annual interest of 6.4% + 1-Month LIBOR, divided by 365 and multiplied by the opening BUY price
      SELL Position: Annual interest of 2.9% + 1-Month LIBOR, divided by 365 and multiplied by the opening SELL price"
      So that would seem to indicate that it's calculated on the price of the asset when you open the trade or close it, but I genuinely thought that the overnight and weekend fees were subject to change throughout the duration of the trade's lifecycle... To put it plainly - I'm not sure. This quote above seems to contradict what I had previously thought, so it may be best to ask eToro directly about that one. Sorry I can't be of more help.

      if you lose more money than you invested you are going to owe etoro that money. Because you have borrowed it to trade with. They expect it back obviously so using lever on a stock longterm is only good if you are sure it's going up. Those fees accumulate
