    Thanks for the excellent demonstration. I used to have a car just like that, so I recognize it....54 Chevy BelAir 2 door hardtop.

    Great video and explanation. What’s the best way to install this style with front and back glass still installed? I have a 56 Oldsmobile and have 5 outer bows and 2 inner bows..

    It's a good idea to paint the car first then do the interior

    Great videos mate. Just a question, are you stapling straight into steel? Or what is it your actually stapling too? Also do you use stainless steel staples when doing this? Cheers

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank You! No not stapling in to steel. On older cars like this chevy there are channels build in to the body that hold "Tack Strips" its like a hard rubber that will hold staples. www.albrightssupply.com/Rear-Style-Convertible-Tack-Strip-p/tacr.htm5&Click=3957
      I typically always use stainless staples. Although Its not a requirement on headliners. Stainless is more expensive but much higher quality and will never rust. Defiantly a must on convertible tops and boats.

    Do you rivit the tack strip near the windshield?

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I glue them on with 3m panel bond or construction adhesive. Panel bond dries faster but is more expensive

    I have cotton 5-bow headliner (the bows having only 1 screw on each end) and don't have the luxury of being able to take out the glass on a 49 Studebaker Commander Starlite Coupe with a curved front windshield and the wrap-around 4-piece rear window. Therefore with the glass and rubber in place, I cannot clamp to hold tension anywhere. I assume I must start at either the centers of the sides and work front and back, then repeat for the windshield and back windows? What is the technique? Please advise the process.

    can you use a blow dryer instead of steamer for applying heat?

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you could but it wont work as well

    • @marclapine1305
      @marclapine1305 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess like using steam on an iron the application of moisture allows the fibers in the material to stretch, such as ironing a cotton shirt collar and along the seams where it puckers after washing, and the weight and steam stretches it back out.

    can this be done without remowing the glass ?

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the car. Some cars yes some no. If the car windows are held in by rubber molding and that molding goes over top of the headliner to cover the edge, Then you will need to remove the windows.

    Nice video, how hard is this to do in a 69 Camaro? I am having a hard time finding someone in my area to do it.

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not too bad. You car will have a different method of attaching the fabric around the edges but the process is very similar.

  • @samstone3185
    @samstone3185 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree, very helpful. However, every video on youtube in regards to headliner installation assumes that you know which holes the bows are suppose to mount too. I would like to see a explanation of the process, of which holes the bows go into and how if you guess wrong on the holes what it will do as you try to install and stretch the headliner.
    On some vehicles, you may have 4 - 6 different location spots for each headliner bow and not every car you buy has the bows still in place. Usually they are in the trunk. So a person does not know where to start.

    • @Theluckyneedle
      @Theluckyneedle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If some one was kind enough to leave you that puzzle in the trunk then you just have to put the bows up in there and figure out where they go. There is no special process. It may take a few times. Do this without the headliner first. You'll be able to tell if one of the bows it out of place because it wont look like an even transition from one bow to the next. Its not hard. Just a little time and common sense you'll get it figured out.

    • @samstone3185
      @samstone3185 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. Yes, I know I will figure it out eventually. I'm retired; I have the time.
      I will take notes of this car's headliner bows placement, make notes, and photos and post it on the Pontiac Forum....just to make life a little easier for the next person with the same question. Of all the videos I've watched, no one reveals the location of the headliner bow placement on a certain make & model of a certain car. That is all I was looking for.

      This is all worse with a vinyl headliner and a curvy body shape. My 60 year old Porsche has both. I have installed a few. The woven cloth backing on the vinyl means you can only stretch it diagonally. Lots of stretching and clamping the edges, then contact cement and no staples.

    Staples ? last time i looked my car was made out of metal.
