Florence + The Machine - Big God (Lyrics)
You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up
You keep me up at night
To my messages, you do not reply
You know I still like you the most
The best of the best and the worst of the worst
Well, you can never know
The places that I go
I still like you the most
You'll always be my favourite ghost
[Chous]
You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up
Sometimes I think it's getting better
And then it gets much worse
Is it just part of the process?
Jesus Christ, it hurts
Though I know I should know better
Well, I can make this work
Is it just part of the process?
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, it hurts
(Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, it hurts)
You need a big god
Big enough to hold your love
You need a big god
Big enough to fill you up
Shower your affection, let it rain on me
Pull down the mountain, drag your cities to the sea
Shower your affection, let it rain on me
Don't leave me on this white cliff
Let it slide down to the, slide down to the sea
Slide down to the, slide down to the sea - เพลง
We would like to thank Miss Florence for levitating the women in the video. It really saved us a lot budget-wise.

Florence trying to convince people she's not a witch but I'm over here like I think we found our new supreme
i think she should make a soundtrack for AHS new season!!! or imagine her being part of the cast and she's like the supreme of the british coven
😂😂😂💀💀💀
Stevie Nicks is supreme for the moment i'd say but Florence is definitely part of the coven :)
she has her own coven in london hahahaha
Read the book "Witch" by Lisa Lister. She references Florence as a friend of her little "coven". Stevie Nicks, too ;)
i can't believe this huge epic hymn was written about not getting a text back. girl me too
Call me a villain but I was convinced this was about something more adulterated. Not sure what, but something.
Only a true lyricist can take petty problems and turn them into rhapsodies
Yeah and what I love about this song is that she doesn't use gender pronouns
saraeli she's probably talking about how God doesn't respond to her prayers, it has a very religious undertone to it.
Whoa!!!!! I love that.
Me and girls having a sleepover, being feral, practising witchcraft, summoning the old gods. You know, as you do.

the song is about a man she was talking to and he ghosted her.not about new or old gods.

they didn't need any wires or ropes to lift the dancers up, florence welch just does that.
I’m Dead 💀
I still haven't found a way down from the ceiling, tbh. She got me, too. :/
Is she an actual witch?
Storm Lee yeah from the olden days, it's on her wiki
Like,an actual flying witch a spell casting witch?
Flo doesn't get enough credit for her dance skill. She has this sultry, dark vibe that captivates me every time I watch her.
She has at least some formal training, but I don't know how ling ago that was. As a trained dancer myself, I think the way she moves is amazing. She understands things it can take years to teach.
You can check out a video of Florence dancing to a few songs from HBHBHB on Vincent Haycock's website. They're equally powerful!

Thanks. Followed her immediately 👍🏼💪🏼💃🏻💃🏻
I honestly love how she shows us women. Yes, beautiful but not moving within the male gaze but as ruthless, of the earth, beastly, brutal women
That's a great description. It's such feminine dancing and yet not sexy, more animalistic, pagan, ecstatic. Like the kind of dancing I'd imagine priestesses of mystery cults did in the ancient times.
I've also noticed this is the kind of dancing I do in my room when no one is watching. It feels a natural way to move my body like that, express my emotions like that. Powerful.
@@ladyreverie7027 your comment struck me because that's the way I tend to move and dance when I'm alone too! There is something innate and freeing about this kind of movement and maybe that's why it's so fascinating to see Florence's choreographies

I love the part where they drag their hands across the water and then kick backwards in rhythm. 2:31-2:38. Seriously messes me up. Every bit of dancing in this video is so amazing. Florence. I love you.
Thats one of my fav parts too!
One of my all time favorite things about this video is the fact that the dancing and clothing shows the explicit strength found within each of these dancers. They are powerful, they are angry, and they can and will hurt you.
The dancing in this is fucking fantastic. It's this surreal, unsettling war dance, and that kind of movement combined with the colourful veils and the long, long hair is just eerie and threatening in the best way.
And the water... yes! Florence the tropical storm out in the Atlantic brought me here. 😛🌀 Really enjoyed this.
i think florence did the choreography herself
Yes
She clearly studied the art of Pina Bausch ;)
I often ask myself, what would women look like / move like / feel like if there were no male gaze. This video managed to find one way of answering it.
The song “Big God” is about “obviously, an unfillable hole in the soul,” Ms. Welch said, “but mainly about someone not replying to my text.” -Florence Welch. #NewYorkTimes

This song and dance feel so beautifully ancient.
In my opinion, this song evokes a little sadness, a little pain, and a little anger. It is pure art.
💫 The high as hope era is already so iconic 💫
I agree! So so stoked.
i used to think she was a witch. I was wrong. she's a pagan goddess
Demo what the heck 😂??
Well, a pagan by definition worships the goddess spirits and nature aka.......they've been duped by demons masquerading as whatever floats their boat.
World Light Warriors where do you roaches crawl from?
She is though
Is your profile picture a sapphire gem from Steven Universe?
I can't even count the number of times that keep coming back to this music video, it really is a masterpiece, absolutely mesmerizing
This video is criminally underrated. Feminist, pagan masterpiece.
.
..
Why is it feminist?
@@Kitsune-dono because it completely eradicates the male gaze. Florence made this video for her, and that in itself is feminism.
@@Kitsune-dono also because in many religions and cultures water is seen as feminine energy and power. It is seen a motherly and life giving thing, which it why is is associated with women in particular. The women dancing together symbolises their sisterhood which is strengthened by the water, but to outside eyes, especially males, it it seen as wrong. But, like i said, they are doing for themselves, which almost completely eradicates the male gaze. This video is packed full of feminism.
Give this woman a freaking Grammy for crying out loud
nejwa B who actually cares about the grammys. It's obvious that they don't even listen to the albums they are awarding, when Macklemore beats Kendrick in best Hip Hop album...
This album should be nominated.
I’d be disappointed if she won one. We’re talking about putting her in the likes of Taylor Swift...
+ TheatreofSymphony Yeah! Unfortunately the grammy currently sucks, seems to be all about sales and not about talent. In the past the awards were better.
Why stop at one? But no, seriously they miscategorize and give it to popular people instead of talented artists.
i can always rely on florence to make me feel like i’ve transcended into another realm with her music and the visuals, sometimes i question if the woman herself is even real
yessssssss
That is a question we should be asking of ourselves.
As some one who is dealing with a lot of religious trauma going into adulthood.... Every part of this moved me
when we give ourselves entirely to the spirit of the dance, it becomes our prayer
THIS WOMAN IS UNREAL !
Thats Because she isnt from here. Shes from another planet
ArseneVids I agree
She's an angel
She's a goddess
ArseneVids i agree!
I love when she’s all primal and pagan like this. She’s a fascinatingly beautiful creature and her music does stuff to my soul that I can’t even articulate. Can’t wait for this new album!!
Karliene She is so intouch with Earth and her Feminity. She is a breath of fresh air. One of those souls with no doubt was a healer of some sorts in a past life. She is amazing.
Although this song has nothing to do with paganism.
paganism is all about recognizing and honoring that mysterious something that is very much manifest in every rock, tree and human breath. there is nothing that has nothing to do with paganism.
Josh Scott you can even feel the paganism in her
The word paganism is derived from early Christian terminology referring to polytheism. Although the Christians didn't really understand that the true worship of the Celts of that time was monotheistic in it's true nature. So I am simply referring to the truth that this has nothing to do with polytheism at all. So paganism is not the appropriate term for the truth of where those ancient religions derive from.
This makes me wanna start contemporary dancing again so badly - so much soul in her art 🦋
She is pure divine feminine and it’s so powerful and beautiful to see her and hear her express it! Phenomenal 🙌🏼
That's how I like my Florence! Dark and Otherworldly.
So that's what the water gave her.
gumyumgirl I actually laughed out loud 👏👏👏

What even is Florence Welch? This is magic. Pure magic.
the choreographer for this video is a GENiUS !
The choreographer in this is Florence and some other dude... Soooo... Tell us something we didn’t already know.
@@DC-df8vk that "some other dude" is Akram Khan, one of the top choreographers in the dance world. Florence is amazing as a dancer, but he's the one who took her nad genius and interpreted it as a group number.

This is why we need art. To feel emotions we've never felt.
powerfullykot you're so gay
Joshua Higgs i'm soooo gay too. any problem?
there is a section in the book The Holy Wild by Danielle Dulsky, that tells a story of Salome, and it’s so similar to this video. she stands in water and removes veils, and at the end she kneels in the water and leans back, and she splashes and shrieks and dances. casting off the veils of the things men have held her accountable for. it’s on pages 66-70 if anyone is interested in reading it:)

If anyone's anything like me and can't rest until the little hidden meanings are understood, this is what the director has said:
“It’s about the power the darkness of longing can give you when you embrace your inner beast alone.... Women who bond themselves together like this, and rise up together like this, are usually accused of being witches, so I wanted to explore that. I also wanted to create an abstraction of Florence as if every woman was a small piece of glass that had shattered inside her. Now they join her outside her body and fight with her, love with her, go to war with her"
For the witches reference, take a look at the painting by Goya called 'Witches’ Flight' :)
I like this interpretation, because I always feel like "witch" is a word that is historically misused and when it is used it is used derogatorily at women. I'm familiar with the paint by Goya. I very much remember from a class I currently teach called The Theology of Rebellion in Colonial Jamaica and a woman known as the "Nanny, Queen of the Maroons" who apparently sustained over 17 gunshots by some accounts and kept fighting with her hack blade against the British who mercilessly abused and enslaved the black population on the island. Even so, the Nanny fought alongside "her boys" and she didn't fight for black women alone - she certainly wasn't fighting for white women who were all too comfortable with watching the abuse the slaves endured - she was fighting for the black men and women. She was of a single mind in some sense, she had to kill to save her people, her fellow black slaves who were held captive and tortured by British men and women alike. The theology of it all comes into question when we start discussing a sort of witchcraft that is actually banned in Jamaica called Obeah, and it exists in some other Caribbean nations, but Jamaica is known for banning a large book (which I own for the purpose of studying) common called The Obeah Bible, which gives very precise instructions on how to perform rituals and other rites that call upon spirits to harm others, often during the victim's sleep, the astral body is attacked and when the person wakes the damage done is real and so some people attributed the power of the Nanny to Obeah, but this is a conversation for another day and another time. Obeah is less influenced by Catholicism because Britain infamously followed in the footsteps of the murderous King Henry VIII and now the Anglican community, in all of its disarray, is very divided between The Anglican bishops of Africa, where the faith and practice of followers closely resembles Catholicism much more than what is referred to as the American branch or the Episcopal community, which many of the African bishops have condemned as being unfaithful to the teachings of Christ. All these things tie into together, but I can't give the syllabus for the class on youtube or you would despise me all the more; however, I can simply say that my point here is that while I appreciate this explication, it forgets that women and men need each other and separatism has never worked for any person or peoples. Even St. Anthony the Hermit had to make his way to the nearest Egyptian town every so often to obtain some supplies for daily life. The part about embracing your inner beast is perhaps poorly worded, because I'm trying to give you the benefit of doubt here - but if you can't explain that a bit more, I would rip that apart as preposterous.
Oh yes! They totally took inspiration from that painting! Beautiful
thank you for this, i spent a good deal of time just staring at the Goya painting whilst listening to this and it actually brought me to tears.
I imeidiatly noticed the reference to that painting
I'm trying to understand. Sometimes it takes a little time to settle, before the intellect catches up...at least in my case. I hear you, though and I'm doing my best to get what this means. Thanks
