Great video. A few points tho. Don’t use leather wipes to clean. They have moisturizer In them to hydrate leather and those same things will stop the glue or dye or finisher from properly bonding. Wash that area with acetone. The bond should last years.
You matched that color so well! I have two (free) faux leather couches and I did this very same thing however, I added fabric softener to the paint to make it stretchy. After 3 years, one couch held up great and the other...well, not so much. I'm going to order the acrylic this time and see if this does the trick! Thanks for the tip! Also! If anyone is taking off a significant amount of the peeling, a hair dryer and a table knife makes it come off like butter! Heat up that vinyl and it nearly slides off with the knife!
I'm impressed with you. I admire people that can do things themselves. I'm 81 and I'm amazed at how helpless so many young people are now. OK, now my ideas to help this go easier and faster. Use a 2-3 inch brush when covering a large area like you had to do. Also on this job if you'd laid the couch down on its back the paint wouldn't have run down toward the seat nearly as much. You did a great job but you spent way more time on it than was necessary. The couch looks great and my computer chair is jealous so I'll be doing it. Cheers, Neill
I used this method. Went to local Lowe's. Spend $20 total. It came out decent. I will buy a protector. I had insurance, so Living spaces refunded my money, and they said keep the couch! Thanks

PRO TIP: peel, sand with fine grit, spray with artist matt clear, spray paint (not brush) to exact color, spray over with gloss leather polish for shoes. It will last much longer and will not crack. Painting may look good but another six months of body heat, shifting while sitting, etc and you have the same problem but now it's cracking under the varnish you painted on. Spraying with leather coat will keep the spray color perfect for a long time and the underspray will stop the continued peeling.
Hi! So I am doing this patch right now and I have some notes! The paint you found works great but I could only find it in small bottles so I had to figure out how to make it last. Mix the right color, add a layer or two, then do the top coat (I found a satin varnish that is pretty spot on for matching a leather sheen) then keep painting to build it up! I found that the fabric absorbs the paint a lot and makes it hard to build up an even surface. My couch is looking so much better now though!
I have that same question. How much paint did you finally buy? I want to redo a handbag in bronze but I only saw the bottles in one ounce sizes and I have no idea if that will be enough for a handbag . I guess I'll buy 2 bottles and if there's any left over I'll use it on shoes or something.

I was honestly just considering buying a new couch cushion (that’s the only part that’s peeling bad) but this is sooo much cheaper. I’m definitely gonna have to try this. I’m tired of having leather pieces follow me wherever I go!

Absolutely brilliant! I watched your video and ordered the exact paints and the Black to mix my brown with as well as the acrylic (white liquid) for the finish. It looks fantastic! Thankyou. Mine was as bad as the one in your video and I bought two bottles of dark brown and 1 black. I have five sections to the suite and the paint was enough. I used approx 5 coats overall and it's amazing. Thanks again.
I am going to be trying this. I looked at all the patches but my peeling couch is too big for them. So I did a google search and here you are. Very helpful!
I think lightly sand the peeling edge. Also, I'd use a small foam roller for the final coats of paint and acrylic. Gonna give it a try! Thanks for the video

You did a GREAT job in your video. I actually just came back home from buying me a used faux leather recliner for only $75. The leather is doing the same as your video shows so I'm going to do just what you did. This recliner doesn't have as much damage as the one you repaired but still can use some repairing. I hope it works just as well for you! Only thing I might do different is use a bigger paint brush to make the job go faster! Also some people in the comments recommended trying sandpaper instead of peeling it by hand. Good luck!

thanks, alot ! it looks really good! for everyone that needs quick cash, go to all the offices in your home town and tell them that you will remove any old leather chairs for them for free. most time these offices throw away really good chairs all they need is to paint the leather over and that some quick cash in your pocket.
I used the dull corner of a 5 in 1 tool and the peeling came off pretty quick and instead of a brush I used a sponge. Nice work!! Thanks for the video and idea!!
Somebody need to do a class action suit for all these defective fake "bonded leather" couches. Plastic more Durable-- car seats don't peel as much as a fake leather couch. National disgrace !!! Nice try but you shouldn't have to paint your couch.
Real leather is so much nicer, I agree! But this couch set was actually given to us and we didn't have to pay anything for it, so I am grateful to have it, even if I have to fix it up a bit every now and then :) It really helped us have enough seating for all the family since we're just starting out. Thank you so much for this. 1,000 pound chair almost ruined some cleaning spray caught a gust of wind within days the seat the arms and some of the back looked like a flame thrower had hit it. been covered with fabric cover but it looks awful. 100% be trying this I cant throw a £1,000 chair, thank you

You did a phenomenal job!! I have a sofa that is peeling horrifically-the entire couch needs repair! I am currently covering the damage with quilts. The sad thing is that despite the horrific peeling, the sofa is in great shape. I hate the idea of throwing away furniture that has so much life left.

It lasted for as long as we kept the couch which was over a year after I made this video. We got rid of the couch in October 2019 and it was still holding up in the spot where I painted (it had started to peel in other new unpainted spots though and so I just got tired of keeping up with it at that point. Plus we moved to a much smaller house and didn’t have space for it any longer).
@@SimpleMomming Could a person just spray the acrylic clear stuff on a new leather type couch say every 6 months or so in the normal wear spots to keep it FROM starting to peel in the first place?

Nice transformation. I have a human touch massaging chair recliner. Bought it about 7 yrs ago. Dark grey leather like. It’s peeling in thigh and calf area and arms. Looks terrible. Paid well over $3k. Very disappointed with human touch. Thought to get it reupholstered but it cost about $1,200 plus fabric! This repair might be an option. Thanks!

Fight The Bully! Yeah, like I mentioned in the video it doesn’t take it back to brand new but it does look pretty good. Mine was also a little rough because it’s fabric underneath the paint. One person suggested that I might have gotten a smoother result if I would’ve used some sand paper to smooth it out first. I’m not sure if that would have helped but I thought that was a good idea. The only thing I can think of is if there is something you could paint over the area first, like to give it a thicker foundation (it would need to be thicker than paint) and then paint on top of that once there’s a smooth texture. I’m not sure if a product like that exists and being a little rough hasn’t bothered me personally, but I know everyone’s couch is probably a little different. I’m sorry it turned out rough :( I wish I knew of a product you could just coat on prior to painting that would give it a smoother base. If you find anything that works, you’ll definitely have to come back and share it with everyone here! I’ll let you know if I hear of anything too!

Your couch looked amazing. Great work. Unfortunately my PU “leather” couch suddenly suffered a peeling frenzy (I wish I could show you). It will be gone the second Tuesday of December when the city picks up large pieces of junk from our curbs each month. I watched your video because it’s cited in WikiHow. PU leather is under, inside and on top of everything in the house. I appreciate seeing how repair actually works and skillfully it can be done - when the entire couch is not affected. If I remember correctly, I think I might of used around 2 of the brown and maybe half of 1 of the black... 🤔 I hope it works out for you! Some people in the comments suggested sanding it first to make a smoother surface which I think may have worked even better than what I did :) Good luck!

You make this look so easy. You matched the color perfectly. I have a dress coat with mixed wool and leather. The arms are peeling 😫 and I've only worn the coat about 5 times. It says in the closet on its original hanger and covered with the store bag it came home with. I don't understand why it's peeling. I have thought about bedazzling the arms, its only the under part that is leather and peeling. The side panels under the arms have some cracks trying to peel. After seeing your video I'm thinking about leather paint instead 🤔
I have 3 other leather coats in the same closet with zero issues. Two of them are at least 3 sizes to big for me. So I'm thinking another option might be to pay a seamstress to use one of them to repair my dress coat🙄

Nice job, You might want to add a step with some very, very fine sandpaper at the transitions from the skin to the underlayment. You could start more coarse to ultra-fine. You might start with 400 grit and ending with 1000, just need to play with your leather. We have a 10 yr old office chair that just started shedding its skin like a bad sunburn. May give this a try.
I think this is a great idea! I was wondering would some kind of latex filler for the edges. I was thinking hair glue as I'm unfamiliar with the latex options out there. I researched and the paint will stick to the latex. Also, maybe a drop of red to better match the couch; it has a red undertone.
My sofa has not started to peel but I can tell it's right at the point where it may want to. Do you think I could just put this on top or would I just need to peel it anyway?
If you paint it on top it will not hold. I tried that the first time and it peeled in no time! You have to have a totally solid surface to paint for it last unfortunately. Someone in the comments suggested trying sandpaper and a few others gave some other suggestions to make the job easier. Best of luck to you when the time comes! 👍🏻
That was better than most videos. How is the couch doing now 2 and a half year later? Maybe one could carefully disolve 1-2 mm of the rim of the repair -spot with acetone and a brush a few hours before painting to get more even transition. - Just an idea and might ruin the job. I especially like that you didnt make an overly long video. All the best and keep them coming :)
Thank you so much, this is exactly what I'm needing to do. I just brought a leather recliner sofa for $20 AUD with the same pilling issue but on the top back of the head rest cushion. I was sure I could fix it, if not 20 bucks was pretty good, but now I know I can :-)
Maybe I’m stabbing in the dark here but wouldn’t one of those nail sponges work better for paint applications? Would it be a little better to use less abrasive sandpaper where you can tape up a square and get the paint to blend a bit better, no expert here but trying to gauge if maybe someone allready has thought about this and probably have done so.

adding more points, a bit of light sanding might help too.

You did a phenomenal job!! I have a sofa that is peeling horrifically-the entire couch needs repair! I am currently covering the damage with quilts. The sad thing is that despite the horrific peeling, the sofa is in great shape. I hate the idea of throwing away furniture that has so much life left.

It lasted for as long as we kept the couch which was over a year after I made this video. We got rid of the couch in October 2019 and it was still holding up in the spot where I painted (it had started to peel in other new unpainted spots though and so I just got tired of keeping up with it at that point. Plus we moved to a much smaller house and didn’t have space for it any longer).
@@SimpleMomming Could a person just spray the acrylic clear stuff on a new leather type couch say every 6 months or so in the normal wear spots to keep it FROM starting to peel in the first place?

I have a human touch massaging chair recliner. Bought it about 7 yrs ago. Dark grey leather like. It’s peeling in thigh and calf area and arms. Looks terrible. Paid well over $3k. Very disappointed with human touch. Thought to get it reupholstered but it cost about $1,200 plus fabric!

@@SimpleMomming One question. I did everything you said. It looks great, but the the painted area isn't as soft as the rest of the couch. It's pretty ruff in that area. Any ideas on how to smooth it out? Thanks.
Fight The Bully! Yeah, like I mentioned in the video it doesn’t take it back to brand new but it does look pretty good. Mine was also a little rough because it’s fabric underneath the paint. One person suggested that I might have gotten a smoother result if I would’ve used some sand paper to smooth it out first. I’m not sure if that would have helped but I thought that was a good idea. The only thing I can think of is if there is something you could paint over the area first, like to give it a thicker foundation (it would need to be thicker than paint) and then paint on top of that once there’s a smooth texture. I’m not sure if a product like that exists and being a little rough hasn’t bothered me personally, but I know everyone’s couch is probably a little different. I’m sorry it turned out rough :( I wish I knew of a product you could just coat on prior to painting that would give it a smoother base. If you find anything that works, you’ll definitely have to come back and share it with everyone here! I’ll let you know if I hear of anything too!
@@SimpleMomming Ok. Thanks for the reply and will do. I will try to buy cuts of the same fabric or something similar and stitch it to the piece I cut out and blend it in with the paint. Your couch looked amazing. Great work. Unfortunately my PU “leather” couch suddenly suffered a peeling frenzy (I wish I could show you). It will be gone the second Tuesday of December when the city picks up large pieces of junk from our curbs each month. I watched your video because it’s cited in WikiHow. PU leather is under, inside and on top of everything in the house. I appreciate seeing how repair actually works and skillfully it can be done - when the entire couch is not affected. If I remember correctly, I think I might of used around 2 of the brown and maybe half of 1 of the black... 🤔 I hope it works out for you! Some people in the comments suggested sanding it first to make a smoother surface which I think may have worked even better than what I did :) Good luck!

You make this look so easy. You matched the color perfectly. I have a dress coat with mixed wool and leather. The arms are peeling 😫 and I've only worn the coat about 5 times. It says in the closet on its original hanger and covered with the store bag it came home with. I don't understand why it's peeling.
I have thought about bedazzling the arms, its only the under part that is leather and peeling. The side panels under the arms have some cracks trying to peel.
After seeing your video I'm thinking about leather paint instead 🤔
I have 3 other leather coats in the same closet with zero issues. Two of them are at least 3 sizes to big for me. So I'm thinking another option might be to pay a seamstress to use one of them to repair my dress coat🙄

Before painting you can use a leather filler. This should help give you a much smoother finish.

Nice job, You might want to add a step with some very, very fine sandpaper at the transitions from the skin to the underlayment. You could start more coarse to ultra-fine. You might start with 400 grit and ending with 1000, just need to play with your leather. We have a 10 yr old office chair that just started shedding its skin like a bad sunburn. May give this a try.

I think this is a great idea! I was wondering would some kind of latex filler for the edges. I was thinking hair glue as I'm unfamiliar with the latex options out there. I researched and the paint will stick to the latex. Also, maybe a drop of red to better match the couch; it has a red undertone.

My sofa has not started to peel but I can tell it's right at the point where it may want to. Do you think I could just put this on top or would I just need to peel it anyway?
If you paint it on top it will not hold. I tried that the first time and it peeled in no time! You have to have a totally solid surface to paint for it last unfortunately. Someone in the comments suggested trying sandpaper and a few others gave some other suggestions to make the job easier. Best of luck to you when the time comes! 👍🏻
That was better than most videos. How is the couch doing now 2 and a half year later? Maybe one could carefully disolve 1-2 mm of the rim of the repair -spot with acetone and a brush a few hours before painting to get more even transition. - Just an idea and might ruin the job. I especially like that you didnt make an overly long video. All the best and keep them coming :)

Thank you so much, this is exactly what I'm needing to do. I just brought a leather recliner sofa for $20 AUD with the same pilling issue but on the top back of the head rest cushion. I was sure I could fix it, if not 20 bucks was pretty good, but now I know I can :-)
Maybe I’m stabbing in the dark here but wouldn’t one of those nail sponges work better for paint applications? Would it be a little better to use less abrasive sandpaper where you can tape up a square and get the paint to blend a bit better, no expert here but trying to gauge if maybe someone allready has thought about this and probably have done so.
