Purchased a 23 Highlander platinum 4cyl turbo (Toyota has extreme success with 4cyl ) it’s amazing power everything is going 4cyl better with a high bred ….. very happy with my purchase
I prefer the 3.5 due to reliability. I am glad we got our XLE back in 2019. Nowadays I’d get the Honda Pilot that got a new dual cam V6 this year that meets epa requirements. Honda was smart to keep the V6 especially when the gas mileage is the same, and it accelerates faster due to more horsepower. V6 is also quieter and smoother. That 4 cylinder sounds like shit, and that is my opinion. It you want a new Highlander, get the hybrid engine.
The 2.4 hasn't been out long enough to make any claims about long term reliability. People love to make assumptions about turbo engines based on VERY outdated thinking. Turbo engines are far more common now, so more attention is being paid to reliability. They've come a long way since the old days, especially from a brand like Toyota, the master at product development and testing. Just wait until the 2nd or 3rd model year and any issues will have been resolved.
The problem is that new hybrid is paired with a new ECVT transmission, so with GHL, you have to either get a turbo charged 4C or an ECVT. It's really terrible.
The hybrid has a CVT, but the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max has a six speed automatic transmission. That’s the way to go if you need a new mid size Toyota SUV. 360 hp too!
I wouldn’t get the 2.4 turbo at all. It is nice in the Grand Highlander because the hybrid system and design makes it as smooth and quiet as the V6. However, in the regular Highlander, it is horrendously loud compared to the quiet and smooth V6. Sorry to hear about your car. Smart move to get a reliable Corolla.
"My only complaint is that it's really obnoxious" I did this same test drive comparison a few weeks back. 4c Turbo feels & sound vastly inferior to the outgoing tried & true V6. Not to mention who wants to be a first generation adopter of anything? No contest. Happy with my 2022 V6.
@@Hernsama Yes I know they have been on Lexus models for a long time. The '23 Highlanders were the first to combine the 4c Turbo with this frame. If you drive a '22 vs a '23 you will know the turbo just makes this a worse car. ALL turbos have more parts, higher temps, higher pressures, more opportunities to cause problems. Any mechanic will tell you that turbos will cost you more if you plan to keep a vehicle for the long run. Give me the most refined version of one of the most reliable engines ever put on the road.
The question is whether the Turbo 4 cylinder is as reliable as the six cylinder. If there is anyone who watches this video and has the new engine with decent miles, it would be good to know if you have run into any maintenance surprises.
My here’s no way the forced induction little engine will be more reliable than the v6. Idk if it is Toyota that built it, those turbocharged engines will not last as long
@@LiquidSm0keThat’s actually a different engine, though I am not worried about reliability on the 2.4T as Toyota has been making turbo engines for many decades.
How is the lubrication to the turbocharger bearings maintained if the car comes off the highway and the engine is turned off.. for instance, at a rest stop along an Interstate highway.... when the turbocharger is still spinning at very high rpm but the engine oil pump is off because the engine has stopped.
The drone of the four-cylinder is horrible. I can’t imagine hearing that sound inside of a tacoma all day long. The fact that the chief engineer said they had to detune the engine just to mate it with a manual transmission in the Tacoma due to crank shaft hammering, means they are already pushing this engine to right under its limits. This is not the type of engine that you should flash or could add 200 hp to. This engine hauling and towing stuff around in a pick up truck for half a decade will show its true colors, whether good or bad.
The new engine may ride as good as the 3.5 Litre engine BUT it won’t last as long. A smaller displacement engine needs to work harder than the larger one and the turbo places a lot more heat so it’s going to be more maintenance involved. Governments placed unrealistic expectations on auto manufacturers.
I had a 15 highlander for my first car now I have a Acura TL that's about paid off but I'm into atvs and jetskis now and looking to trade for a SUV. Though I could put a tow hitch on the TL.
Those acuras are super nice! I’d say it sounds like an suv or a Tacoma might be in your future😂 I’m a big jet ski guy myself. I love the old stand up jet skis like the Yamaha superjet and the Kawasaki 750sx
My only issue is the reliability will it be able to last as long and say I load up the car with people and stuff will power be delivered properly since it's gonna be a heavy car it's gonna struggle alot if there's gonna be more load on the car than less load cause it's a V4 Turbo not a V6 and Turbo's tend to overheat alot and parts wear quicker than in a normal V6 Aspirated engine.
It may not be as reliable as the V6 but it is definitely more reliable than those v6 from other brands. The 4c turbo is more responsive and powerful than the v6 . I have 2024 lexus rx350 previously owned 2022 rx350 with v6, im happy with my new 2024 lexus rx350 it is more nimble and take off right away once you press the gas paddle from stop.
If you're interested in a drag race between these 2 midsized SUV models you're missing the point. Far more pertinent to most buyers would be which makes it to 300k miles. HINT: it won't be the turbo.

This is a BS video by someone trying to convince you to buy into Toyota hype regarding the 4 cyl turbo. I've owned 2 Highlanders, both with the 6 cylinder engine. Both were quiet, dependable, great riding vehicles. While the 4 cylinder turbo does have more torque, it is rated as less overall HP than the 3.5. His "scientific" comparison is rubbish. Note how he only compares it to the 6 cylinder from 0-40 mph (saying he doesn't want to stress the new one). That's because at freeway speeds or in hilly environments the 4 cylinder is whiny and much louder than the 3.5. He does mention he doesn't like that it "sounds like a Rav". Would have been better to have had a decibel meter to be scientific, although that would only measure the loudness differences. I believe that in a hilly environment the Highlander is much too heavy to be powered long term by a 4 cylinder engine. Also if a quiet highway ride is important to you I'd shy away from it also (probably ok for flatlanders who don't do a lot of distance driving and NEVER tow anything). They are rated to tow but that's nuts unless ya buy a new car frequently. I've bought my last Highlander because of the elimination of the 6 cylinder.
