  • Five decades ago on the 7th of March, leader of the Awami League, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh, then known as East Pakistan. The proclamation led to a brutal crackdown by the Pakistani army on the people of Bangladesh. 3 million people were killed as Asia's new nation emerged into an uncertain future through mayhem and war.
50 years after its birth, Bangladesh has now emerged as one of the fastest growing economy in the world, overtaking even its closest neighbours, Pakistan and India.
But is the nation still haunted by its traumatic past? Has it fulfilled a part of Sheikh Mujibur's dreams of a democratic, peaceful and exploitation-free society called "Sonar Bangla" or Golden Bengal? Or has the price of independence been too high for the country to bear?

I was a student at the Engineering University 1969-72. Lost classmates. Professors. Immigrated to Canada. Still feels like yesterday. Only pray to God that someday Sonar Bangla will be really Golden Bengal. Read an article even today that Bangladesh is projected to be ranked 26 in world economy by 2028. Somebody please pinch me.

    Guys always remember one thing.
When India was helping the people of Bangladesh to protect them from Pakistan, the USA ,UK, FRANCE, GERMANY, SAUDI, IRAN AND all Islamic countries sent their warships to destroy Indian Navy at last only to be protected by Russian submarines who were called by India.
This is the humanity of USA and it's allies

I am an American citizen and son of Bengal (both East and West Bengal). This doco made me cry tears of joy and sorrow. I am so proud of the Bangladeshi people. The woman at the end who said Bangladesh paid with its blood really made my cry the most. I feel so proud to be Bengali. Both Bangladeshi Bengali and Indian Bengali.

My friend, I am sad at that loss of human life....but, let's be realistic, it HAS to be much much higher than that. Logic dictates that fact.
100 daily deaths in a city of 35,000,000 is way too low, especially when president Hassina has done nothing, or perhaps, is unable to do anything, for the Dhaka population.

The genuine truth: The main force in aiding the suppressed Bengalis in creating Bangladesh was India backed by the loyal USSR. Otherwise it is unlikely Bangladesh could have emerged that easily. We had highly educated, honest and nationalistic founding fathers who laid the foundations of modern India. Indira Gandhi made India into a military superpower. She fragmented Pakistan (thus aiding the Bangladeshis in having their own country) while the friend of Pakistan China ran out of fright from the scene rather than protect Pakistan and the USA was baffled in the 1971 war. Indira Gandhi had a sophisticated nuclear bomb blasted in 1974. She brought Sikkim, Siachen and parts of POK back to India, had the missiles made and earlier in 1967 liquidated more than 400 Chinese soldiers at Nathu La. She was the greatest politician along with Mr. Putin (is) on planet earth recently. The only major mistake she made was attack our temple when she had other options. Dr. Manmohan Singh a great leader gave our economy a boost. Today India a land of 1.4 billion people is the third strongest military power after Russia and the USA surely stronger than China which is strongly Jewish backed. Mr. Modi is only enjoying the harvest of crops laid by earlier great Indian leaders.

And the same family has been in charge since the beginning not exactly democracy no matter what they say it goes along with declaring your own country when it already belongs to someone else. He was somehow survived by runnig away. But still, I've no objection against Pakistan. It was the 1971th generation who did wrong. We can't blame their kids for that. But at least don't say it an one sided story. It was not a story. It was a real war. Bangladesh didn’t published it for the first time. It was Symon Dring, a British Journalist, who published it internationally for the first time, with a caption "STOP GENOCIDE ".

    Was richer than America also
British rule and east India company then Pakistan coup sucked, looted Bengal's resources, money everything. Killed almost all the intellectuals
    Bangladesh was called basket case
Pakistan mocked Bangladesh in many platform and denied genocide, also India who helped during liberation also tried Bangladesh to go after their rule and Indians called Bangladeshis poor termites and Bangladesh India’s responsibility remained under India’s shadow
    Bangladesh found it's own track
Bangladesh is now become fastest growing economy in the world
Our Bangladeshi people are working really hard to reduce poverty

If some politicians from India have recently made negative statements against Bangladeshi should not be held as a grudge against the help provided by India in Bangladesh Independence Struggle. India also accepted millions of refugees without subjecting them to discrimination at that time. Just as politically motivated people in Bangladesh attack Hindus in remote incidents, but they do not represent Bangladesh at all! Unfortunately India is in the grip of a right wing government since 2014 and as you can imagine they tend to create divisions for votes.
