You can set the Service Tag in BIOS. You need to enter bios and under service tag. You can finde the service tag in the old bios or under the Backcover. Also on Dell page.
    Nice Work.

That's great, but same as with the xps we need more details on the bios cooking process. It's weird that service tag hasn't been asked and they are only asking random numbers from board. Please check you original bin file with the one they fixed and find out what changed. You only need a hex editor program to compare files.

As an ex Dell warranty engineer, we used to have a bootable dos CD with the flash tool on it. Latitude and Inspiron boards were the same but we just flashed the replacement board with the correct BIOS and then use the service tag util to re-input the service tag.

It's just like I told you on the last live session chat... Those BIOS faults are not new, they've been there for many years before... and quite frequent on all Dell laptops, not only XPS and Precision, but also Inspiron and Vostro alike. Seen so many cases before, even under warranty, and strangely enough, Dell service usually chooses to replace the motherboards entirely when this happens (if it's a warranty case) or deem a no-fix outside of warranty...
Crazy, I know, but that's the situation unfortunately...

    • @silvake

The key point here is they deliberately made reprogramming the BIOS/UEFI so complicated, so ppl will somehow be forced to take their official advice and buy another new mobo instead. Pretty much the same Apple does, knowing it's an expensive device, so ppl will not abandon them easily...

Hardware & Software go hand in hand today (together). Personally, I feel that I am several steps behind in this field (software for current laptops) but if I acquire the appropriate programmers accompanied by their operation manual with well-detailed instructions to handle them, I could familiarize myself (I remember with nostalgia the manuals for oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, etc. ., from the old days).
On the other hand, excellent intuition and analysis to solve this high quality device and for that very reason of its cost. Thank you very much for sharing. All the best.

The most interesting part for me personally is to find out what is actually causing data in bios chip to become corrupt!? This was never an issue with the older laptops. I can only guess that this has something to do with the process of production of the chips. Please share your thoughts! Thanks for another interesting video!

    • @justinspiredfallout

Older BIOSes (non UEFI) could also become corrupted but I think now they are getting so big and complicated, there are simply more points of possible failure. Add to that the relatively new business of Windows Updates updating BIOS (and other firmware) without asking is also another possible failure point. All it takes is an impatient person to forcibly power off their laptop even if the message on the screen says not to.

Dealing with BIOS corruption will be more easy if first you try recovery methods.
Long time ago was so called bootblock that can recover BIOS from image on floppy CD or HDD when triggered
These days there are still methods to do that on UEFI , but every vendor implement it different.
You need to have BIOS recovery file or stock BIOS image file on some media, on right path, then trigger recovery mode by some key press at startup or some other things required.
If works then you don't need to deal with recovering serials, service tags, mac address etc.
Don't know for newer models but if memory doesn't trick me on HP's was Win+B pressed when powering up and files must be on predefined path. On Dell's was keeping pressed Del and insert charger (no battery) or Ctrl+Esc

maybe it has something to do with lower version of windows probably since i always reformat laptops for customer and always going for newer version. what ive always see is on dell,hp is that when you windows update is fetches firmware update and automatically apply it on after windos os update, but on other budget laptops like acer firmware updates can be only updated via manual or hidden in optional windows update. but some old hp / dell model they dont force firmware/bios update and like acer ones they too or windows hid it to optional updates but not all.

I worked at Dell as a support professional, the service tag number jtag is a number that we ask the customer if they call so we can see if there is still guarantee or not, we verify the name, adres ect. We also see which laptop it is and we can see how to troubleshoot that specific laptop. If it can't be solved by Phone and the laptop is still under guarantee then we sent a mecanic with for example a New motherboard and all the hardware needed to fix the problem. If a jtag number is not present the laptop still works fine there is no speed limit, the only thing you can't do is call support

Beyond that they offer comonents not avaiable at other laptop familes like outstanding display panels, detachable graphics cards, good keyboards and pretty much more security implementations.

How to identify bios chip on laptop motherboard

    • @markanderson2904
      @markanderson2904 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Look for a chip in a SOP-8 or SOIC-8 package (they are most commonly used). See if it is powered by the coin battery (if there is one). Look at the brand name (Winbond is very common). Look at the part number on the chip. It will usually begin with "25" and have the size as part of the number, e.g., 16 or 32. The BIOS binary file that you are going to use should be the same size as the chip. If it's not, then that is probably not the BIOS chip. Although, some BIOS software is spread across two chips. Also, check out Adamant IT on TH-cam (search "adamant it bios") for man examples of BIOS re-programming.

Bro, my laptop is AMD, it has Radeon Vega 8 1gb graphics, I want to update the graphics, then do I have to buy a separate laptop graphics card, can I update only the graphics card?

It depends. The graphics "card" in a laptop is usually not an actual circuit board, but rather the circuitry of the card placed right on the motherboard. That is not upgradable. If, like this Dell laptop, the graphics is on a separate board, then it might be upgradable if the manufacturer offers one (and drivers for it).

Well. Corrupted bios isnt Dell only issue. I had bios issues even with Gigabyte DUAL BIOS motherboards.

Try another time to save a bios.bin from chip, erase IC and restore same .bin file. Mani time for me working.

You could have programmed the bios without disassembling the laptop. And the "cooking is only needed when the bios file is encrypted.

You may have to read the BIOS chip, then find where the password is located in that file and delete the password, or do some other editing of the file to remove the need for a password. Then, write the file back to the chip.

@@markanderson2904 Programmed or planned obsolescence is the shutting down of an older product for a newer product or technology.

Whats the difference between metal and plastic blades on a fan?
More blades = more air can be moved? or?
Btw, heatsink is bent between cpu and gpu. Hope that gases did not get out.
You need to learn use "fit" and "uefitool".
Here is a short amateur video how to replace bios, insert service tags and windows key on a lenovo system. Just to get a idea how to do it.
