You got a good deal. I picked up a free mower and cleaned the carb, changed the oil, sharpened the blade, maybe a spark plug change, forgot to change the air filter, and still sold it quickly at $150. If anything, I'd probably feel a tiny bit bad about talking them down that far, but not if they were excessively rude I guess.
I think you did ok. $20 for two mowers... you got a decent deal, even if it's just for parts.

Wow, that cleaner you’re using is very effective! I think you did very well by not losing your cool and walking away, $10 per mower is a bargain even if they’re both basket cases to those of us who enjoy repairing. It was a shady thing for the seller to do but you made the best of it.

This mower alone is worth $20, but the bait and switch approach is annoying. Good on you for not getting too annoyed about it and seeing you would still come out on top.
And you can't be too surprised to see a Briggs flat head start up with just a squirt of gas 😅

Thanks for salvaging another lawn mower destined for the landfill. I figure over half of the machines thrown out are just fine. It's probably some little thing wrong and they just buy a new one. BTW, I have model nearly identical the one in video. Bought from Sears in '08 for $230.00. Used the crap out of it! Still looking and running great, AND still starts with ORIGINAL battery! Mine does not even have an "alternator" for charging it! Oh, you may be missing the mulching "plug" that fits into the rear discharge chute. I bet you didn't get a bag either. The thing is a beast for bagging and mulching. Best mower I ever had for that. It grinds dead leaves to a powder!

$10 per mower is fine. Anniversary edition is basically a sticker. The real win is the electric start. That’s rare.

I think you did the right thing. They were obviously running a bait-n-switch (hint: look if they have other "free" listings). Two for $20 in todays used mower market is a deal in my book. I had my friend who works in a machine shop make me one of those scraper that you use to clean the underneath of the lawnmower. WOW! Talk about amazing. That scraper cleans the underneath like crazy. Awesome scraper to have.

I think you did good all around but all mine were freebies and all I had to do was haul them home. I liked the key start after it got fixed and it'd probably still be here if the rest of it hadn't died, BUT I'd never be where we are if that'd happened. The battery job has mowed the yard 4 times, low wheel speed (max 4 m.p.h.) and economy on blade speed and still just uses one bar on the battery usage meter. I mow on 2 inch height and if it's high grass there is plenty o9f power to take care of it. With the blades running at their own pace and not dependant of a gas motor, it just cuts right on. Can't tell much difference between the reduced tire pressure from 30 to 10/11 but seems it does ride and hold better and turn smoother. All in all I'm glad to be where we are now. The flat head briggs engines are bullet proof usually. They take abuse very well I picked up a free equipment lot a few weeks ago had a Craftsman self propelled mower with the same engine starts right up has a small rust hole in deck and the other items 3 of the other machines run but need a little work.

Not everybody has the time and resources to find these gems.
10 years ago I had just bought a house and had spent every penny I had on things like air conditioning (it was July in Florida). The local used lawn mower guy found a couple of these old Quantum lawnmowers and was offering them for $75. New they were probably around $169 then so buying a half used up mower might not be as smart as it may sound. Over 10 years I replaced the pull start cord, air filter, mower blade, and magneto coil. That was about $50 I might not have had to spend.
And after 10 years the steel deck has rusted leaving a small hole in the deck outside the blade circle and the foldable push handle wore a groove near the deck fixture and broke. Fortunately I have a friend who spotted a couple mowers at the recyclers so I didn't half to pay for a new push handle. The carburetor probably would leak so I measure the gasoline and get about 5 minutes of mow time through dry grass per ounce of gasoline. The governor automatically senses moist grass and chugs through the tall moist grass with about 20% less efficiency. My friend found a low hour TB110 that only needed a new carburetor so I've got that in a closet ready someday. I used the OHV TB110 while I was waiting for a magneto to arrive for my old mower and it was a lot lighter and rolled easier but used a lot more gas. There will be no second Troy Bilt mower for me the TB110 will be my last.

I have a similar situation. Picked up a 2007 toro sr4 super recycler curbside. The aluminum deck is fine but has a crack below the side discharge. It didnt come with a mulch plug. I had to repower with a briggs 6.75 I had laying around. This was an 8 hundred dollar mower with electric start. The key and ignition are present along with the battery box but the starter and ring gear are on the dead briggs I removed. These mowers are pretty special with the zerk fittings at the wheels. Probably will leave it as is but I'd really like to make it right.

I've had this happen to me as well on free craigslist items, but usually they'll ask for money before I'm given the ok to pick it up. If I ever came across someone who said it was free and then wanted to charge once I made the journey to pick it up, then I'd be a little annoyed about it as you were. But in the end, I think you got a good deal. A self-propelled mower with electric start is pretty valuable.

When it comes to the batteries for these, I can get them for about $80 AU$. I have 4 ride on mower batteries powering my mobility scooter, & these are on trickle charge every day, due to the solar panel canopy I installed. These batteries cost me $99 each AU$ from my local car part supplier. I would not have a problem paying $20 for the pair.
nice, we have a scooter that takes only 2 batteries but we use the charger provided with the scooter
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE my mobility scooter started with 2 batteries, but not long enough range, hence the added 370W solar panel, & extra batteries. I also have added UHF CB radio, & sound system, pre-subwoofer job. Works well. It is a bit slow, so I'm looking at putting a Benevelli transaxle under it some time in the next few months. Standard battery power on them is 24vdc. The Benevelli transaxle is 24vac, & has a 3 phase induction motor with some serious power

that's not too much crap to wade through for the best engine ever bolted to a walk-behind deck. It's a great engine. They all plug the air filter, then foul the sparkplug. It just needs service. Like any other mower.
Great deal, for $10 each is what I call spotters fee.
I have noticed this in Australia, where they list it for free but ask for offers, but Marketplace has put this option in their classifieds.🧐

Flipped a similar Craftsman earlier this summer that was an alley find. Cleaned it up, checked, cleaned and gapped the plug. Gapped the magneto and replaced the drive belt. Quantum started on the second pull. Boy I wish I would have known about your innovative battery fix before I sold it. Will be looking for another electric start so I can try it out.

That mower is in amazing condition great job, fun fact, I also use a honda mower mine is a 216 model along with my normal use of my john deere mowers with the kawasaki engines.

I would have been mad but probably would have made the same offer. $10 is what I give the scrap man for mowers. I have paid up to $40 for a non running complete newer mower.

I went over to my neighbours who had a big scrap pile of garbage from the previous residents,
i got 2 Mcculloch chainsaws (1978 Powermac 310 and a 1994 more modern looking one)
A hurricane lawnmower (no idea about any other branding, but it has self propel so thats nice)
A mystery brand brush mower with the Tecumseh engine
And a homelite trimmer (a rare brand in Finland) so in a nutshell, do you think its worth for me to restore this decades old stuff and where do you recommend buying parts?
Also where the hell is the spark plug on the old Mcculloch 310, been trying to find it for ages to lube the cylinder.

as long as the items are in one piece then yes they're worth saving. Also the spark plug is next to the muffler under the side cover.

Sometimes you can cut off your nose despite your face. You did the right thing, you still got a great deal. The underside of the deck could use a rattle can of black Rustoleum, or maybe just a shot of Fluid Film. That's a nice looking mower, I would look for someone who collects Craftsman mowers, they may offer you more than you think!!!

It's worth more in parts than as a complete runner. Key start for 07 was a real luxury. I have a similar Craftsman pull start that is bullet proof.

The price for the two mowers provides a good profit margin. I have noticed this same situation with sellers. They list a mower free to attract attention, and then want money. I usually don't bother with those people, or simply offer no more than $20.00

I was not present at your transaction, so I do not know, but did the seller’s explanation seem genuine? Did a relative mispost the items, in your gut feeling? I got the impression from your description of the conversation that they really did expect that the ad was to sell, not to be a free ad. Even at $25 each, that is not an unfair price. $10 is a great deal.

Yes that's a common catch. Post as free to get your attention and say not free in the description. I usually just skip those sellers. If you have a price then post it.

Think I would've walked away. But you have the advantage of knowing what these mowers are really worth, even just for parts. Next time something like this happens, I would make an even lower first offer! Make them squirm a little....

I have the very same mower and I have to get a new carburetor it needs a new needle and seat and I'm not just going to replace them it a aftermarket carburetor so I figured it would be better to get a new one then rebuild it
good luck with it, my success rate is rather low when it comes to seat replacement

If you thought you were being played, it's no longer an issue of money. It becomes an issue of one-up-mans-ship. The items were easily worth the price you payed, but the correct thing to do was offer them an insulting amount. Next step is to sell one for hefty bucks to one of their neighbors so they get to see it and be reminded or it often.
