+Thomas Katz Sorry im so late to respond. I didnt get a notice for your comment. My tics are very noticeable. Both my motor and vocal tics are very pronounced. I also curse and have echolalia. And Like I mentioned in the comment above I have The same kind of epileptic like looking episodes that Jess described in the video. Full body tics that look like epilepsy but are tourettes.
I have Tourette's my self and for me it's very vocal I can still remember my friends in tear of laughter the day I shouted in class "I slap a window so hard it broke your grandads sound barrier"
Rikki Glasgow I have almost the same thing. I want fully diagnosed with Tourette's but I do have tics. I don't have coprolalia, but I have twitch like movements that I can hold back every once in a while but it comes out eventually. I will roll my eyebrows, flick my right hand pinky finger forward, and blink. The first tic I ever had was snapping. I was soon told that the tics would wear off when I was 12-13 years old, but I'm now 14 and they have just gotten worse. It used to just be one tic at a time, like snapping. As of now I have a combination of shaking my head, blinking, stretching my thumbs, raining my eyebrows, crinkling my nose, and making rhythms out of breathing. If that makes sense. My tics will get worse with stress, anxiety, and tiredness. It's sometimes hard to fall asleep when I'm stressed because I can sometimes wake myself up with a shake of my head.. it's amazing to find people who have the same experience as me, so I know I'm not alone.
I deal with this too, I also have two vocal tics, but only one which comes out often. I have a diagnosis of Chronic Tic Disorder, no Tourettes, this is because my vocal and motor tics are not always present like 24/7, but also because I can go through stages of having no vocal tics, (I always have motor tics). So I do understand.
Kei Hill it's really nice knowing there is other people out there that understand what each of us are going through.. once you say Tourette's people automatically assume that you can't control your body and are prone to saying uncontrollably ridiculous things, but really it's very different (depending on your type of case..) my vocal tics aren't words, more like a soft grunting sound.. but still to people I have to tell people I have a neurological disorder rather than tics, because they think the insects and then it's really awkward.
Yes! my vocal tics are a grunt/gulping noise, and I make an f or k noise with my mouth a lot. I also pop my lips. A lot of my tics I have managed to almost turn into "normal" movements, but obviously not all. And my friends got used to it. I do experience what I call tic attacks, (liken to the seizure but less violent), and my friends have learned how to help me when those happen. I have taken to explaining it is neurological also, and then say I make odd or strange noises and do odd or strange movements.
This sounds so similar to me. My first tic was in first grade when I couldn't stop raising my eyebrows and looking up. For the most part my tics have only been very mild since then such as muscle twitches in my legs and very small vocalizations, kind of like tiny hums. For the past 5 or so years its been rubbing my lips against a protruding tooth of mine. Even after getting braces to make my teeth straight I still rub my lips across my teeth, causing jaw pains sometimes. I always knew I had tics but never got diagnosed with Tourettes. I totally understand the rhythmic breathing thing! Sometimes my muscle twitches will be in "circular" rhythms too.
I have Tourettes too. I'm cool with having it. Doesn't make me feel any less than I should. I just wish everyone was ok about having it. Nobody should feel stigmatized
IAMSYMPHONY I don't have tourrettes but I have autism so understand what it's like I understand but some people don't some disorders don't need to be cured like autism or tourrettes syndrome

I've heard her say 'biscuit' so much that I have actually come to ignore it. She sounds like a completely normal talking person when you ignore it too. Now I'm just worried I'll completely ignore the word whenever it is being used without Tourette's.
When people are able to ignore my tics when I'm talking is one of my fave things. It helps me stay focused on what I'm saying and not get side tracked by my tics if someone points it out. Usually when someone points it out I tic more. It can be hard for some people to ignore it but it's very humanizing when it is ignored. I don't mind a laugh or two about it though if it's not while I'm talking and it doesn't take over the topic of what I'm saying. I have tourette syndrome and was diagnosed in L.A. by the leading doctor on the subject (i forget his name - im 30 and i was diagnosed at around age 6) I had verbal tics, humming and whistling but that subsided with age. I however have motor tics where i nod my head, pop my wrists and ankles and blink a lot and twitch my muscles in my neck and clinch my jaw, everything has to be even - sometimes it takes a while to realize im doing it, usually when it hurts or someone stares at me. I havnt watched the video yet but I searched tourette syndrome art because I was interested in why I am such a visual artistic person. I am a pro photographer and everyone I talk to always says that my eye for photography is amazing. I'm not very social and I'm a self learner. It's a curse sometimes because I'll stay up for days sometimes learning something like photography, photoshop, ect. It is very hard to do something that I'm not interested in, it's like it's imposible to concentrate. I failed through all of high school then went to job corps and got my ged in 3 days and went to a tech school for graphic communications. While in school again, I took a photography class and have been into it and doing it ever since for the last 4 1/2 years. I can visualize everything and post process in my mind the entire process of what im going to do in photoshop to see a final result before even taking a shot. I am street smart and book smart but my social skills lack. I was a loner growing up because I got made fun of a lot. If you have tourette syndrome, USE IT and think of it as a GIFT and not a Desiese. :) look up AEON Artistry on facebook :)

I still think of this Ted talk a decade later and just LOVE Jess. She is an absolute shining example of working with a condition rather than demanding that all others change for her. That is serious strength, humility, and frankly the BEST of humanity.
My name is Joseph also have the same condition Tourette syndrome. I'm looking for friends on here who have the same condition. thanks for this video it was very uplifting. this condition is very challenging but I deal with it it's a part of me and I can't change it. one thing I can do is share positive message in the world. I'm sure this video is very uplifting.
I have it to. My worst is my breathing tourette where k have to take very deep breathes even though it's not necessary. It never feels like I have enough air, but I also have this tic where I have to throw my arm out. Everyone asks me why I do it, and I always reply with, "I can't help it..." anyone else with tourettes is a real hero
JOSEPH FALCONE I'm waiting for the 12 month period to end (at the end of the month) to be formally diagnosed with Tourettes. The worst bit is at school you have to explain to people what it is and why, but you can't say 'I have Tourettes' because you don't. People come up to me and ask me to tic for them, which I explain cannot be done on command but people do not like listening. I do MMA which is a mix of martial arts like kickboxing, sparring, ju jitsu and weapons and if helps occupy my mind and stop tics.
I have TS, although not to this severity. Although I know I have way more than five tics a minute, if I calculate that it's an average of 80 million over a lifetime. I think this is what triggers anxiety and stress that I feel over time. This has become very overwhelming recently. It's comforting to read other stories of it and non sufferers willing to be educated.
@@mrswry3086 Or accidentally punch you! I wonder if things like hugs are difficult? And how does she brush her teeth or use a toilet? No wonder she needs support workers, this must affect so many aspects of her life.
Not tryna be funny or anything here but seriously she must have a constant bruise on her chest like holy... feel sorry for her. Inspirational though and I also believe it's important to look at the funny of it, kinda brings light to their situation.
he said in a separate documentary that it stopped bruising a long time ago, but she wears those protective gloves to keep her knuckles from cracking and bruising
I love this lady. She's adorable and so brave for speaking out about the disability. She is quite amazing for her unique way of thinking about the tics creatively and amazing.
I love herrr. She's probably one of the most influential people I've ever seen. She's so confident and not afraid to speak up about this condition that really no one but the people with it are able to fully understand.
Honestly this woman is such an inspiration to me and probably many more. She doesn't let her tourettes get in her way of living and she even finds some of her tics amusing. Which is a big help to people with tourettes because they can now find peace with theirs
Tourrettes for me is a glorious, and wondrously beautiful excuse to stop, sit, and listen, and to disregard the ticking clock. How beautiful. How grand. What a blessing!
As long as people in music and football industry are earning millions of dollars per month and PhD students and researchers as much to pay for rent and food and nothing more, this is going to be the condition = no cure for many many diseases. People should change the way they think and spend money.
It’s heart breaking to know that people go through this. It has to be one of the most hardest things ever to deal with. People judge a lot so that’s one of the reasons why it’s hard. And they can’t help what they say,and even some of the things are very inappropriate but it’s ok because that’s one of the effects. I just really wish I could see most of the people with this illness and talk to them about it. I know I’m gonna cry because it breaks my heart soo much and if I could I would take it all away for all of them truly!😭💔💔
Humor and creativity is indeed the answer! I have Tourettes aswell, but in a much lighter form. Don't worry I still get pointed and laughed at quite frequently. I have lived my life with humor being my key to being able to communicate and be among "normal" people. Humor is the only thing that helps me get away from the freak I am...fml
i also have tourettes syndrome and i heard that it will not go away. when i was 6 it was very bad and i couldnt control it, but now (im 14) its almost gone but sometimes comes back
I had several tics in my youth and adolescence. I didn't understand what it was and was told by an adult that I looked retarded. It frightened me and made me and hurt me. I still have some minor tics, however, God helps ease them.
Waiter:"What may I get You?" Jess:"Biscit, a Biscit, no a crossa- Biscit." Waiter:"Uh anything el-" Jess:"Biscut" Waiter:"I know do you want anything to drink?" Jess:"Nope I have tourettes can I have a hedgehog, I mean croissant, please?" Waiter:"Oh, Of course." Jess:"Thanks hedgehog biscut." Waiter:"Lol, another one?" Jess:"That wasn't a tick."
i found it hard to filter through her ticks and listen to her message at first, but after a while I was used to it and she's a very good speaker and has a lovely voice. :)
Brilliant work. I hope you're so proud. speaking out about tourettes is difficult but you have really hit the nail on the head. looking forward to seeing tourettes hero
I was recently diougnoused with Tourette syndrome my tics weren't so bad before but after watching this I had such bad tics 😂 it's ok though my tics are only making sounds and rolling my eyes around
I have chronic tic disorder (not Tourette's because I don't have vocal tics) and watching this made me tic loads too 🙈 It's funny how thinking about tics makes us tic more. It's definitely so important to see the humour, despite all the negative stuff.
yeah thats why i dont like talking to people about my tics and such. I just cant concentrate cause im trying to hold back a tic so i can finish a sentence but then all im doing is thinking about my tic so it just get worse :P
Same!!! And then I feel almost as if they think I'm putting it on cos we're talking about it which is rubbish haha! I totally lose my train of thought when I tic mid sentence
i had a tic once because I was given haldol at a psychiatric hospital and it caused a day-long tic where my neck would twitch I couldnt control it. From my eyes(my POV) it looked like the world shook quickly in a circular motion clockwise and counterclockwise in a twitch like fashion. It was very stressful and any stress made them so much worse. It is hard to explain but this is what it feels like: YOU THINK YOU CAN CONTROL BUT YOU REALLY CANT. WHEN YOU FIRST GET IT, YOU THINK ITS WITHIN YOUR CONTORL BUT AFTER A WHILE YOU REALIZE YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL. THESE THINGS ARE INVOLUNTARY SEIZURE-LIKE MOMENTS WHERE EVERY TIC IS LIKE A BLUR IN YOUR MIND.
You are awesome for doing this, and you are a really good speaker even with your condition, honestly if I went up on stage I would be a stuttering mess and wouldn’t sound as clear and descriptive with my wording as you. It’s cool to see people have to push themselves harder than the average person and yet still be able to accomplish more than one.
it's nice to see her laugh at her own tics. I have the same problem except my tics are usually super hero based. I laugh at my own tics and sometimes make jokes. it really helps.
My brother has Tourette's his tick is blinking hard and twitching his nose and yelling "Mufasa" (from lion king) but my cousin also has it but he falls down and lays on the floor for about a minute and he can't move at all he also bangs on his chest like she dose, and his vocal tick is making the noise of a Machine gun
i found it most interesting how her ticks reacted to the audience not just did their own thing, intriguing stuff, lot of respect for her, TED makes most TV seem so boring
I love that she is as surprised at her tics as we are, and finds them just as hilarious.
snakebarber as do i
instaBlaster
"I'm imagining you all in bikinis" had to be a favourite of mine. Respect to you my friend
Alex Graham my favourite was cat sex
Cat sex pajamas
Joe's batman's cousin
When was that
and Aladdin!
It's interesting that after 5 minutes you start to ignore the usual ticks and they phase out like background music.
TheTechnoLocker I thought the same thing.
TheTechnoLocker exactly!
Nope, not me, towards the end it pissed me off actually more than anything, and I stopped watching.
yeah me either. i could barely follow what she was saying toward the end.
TheTechnoLocker I had to like this comment to get it to 666

I'm looking for friends on here who have the same condition. thanks for this video it was very uplifting. this condition is very challenging but I deal with it it's a part of me and I can't change it. one thing I can do is share positive message in the world. I'm sure this video is very uplifting.
I have it to. My worst is my breathing tourette where k have to take very deep breathes even though it's not necessary. It never feels like I have enough air, but I also have this tic where I have to throw my arm out. Everyone asks me why I do it, and I always reply with, "I can't help it..." anyone else with tourettes is a real hero
+Kazer Limestone i have that breathing one to!it f**kin sucks
JOSEPH FALCONE I'm waiting for the 12 month period to end (at the end of the month) to be formally diagnosed with Tourettes. The worst bit is at school you have to explain to people what it is and why, but you can't say 'I have Tourettes' because you don't. People come up to me and ask me to tic for them, which I explain cannot be done on command but people do not like listening. I do MMA which is a mix of martial arts like kickboxing, sparring, ju jitsu and weapons and if helps occupy my mind and stop tics.
KazerIRL Wow I used to feel like that. I felt like I didn't have enough air and I needed deep breaths but I don't have tourettes?
Try to think of Tourette's as like hiccups that never stop. That's how I put it.
"Cat sex pajamas"
See, even Tourette's still maintains a spark of uncontrollable creativity :)
I really want to give her a hug
Cristal Lugo me to she has such a good attitude to it she deserves the best
She’ll whisper biscuit in your ear
@@mrswry3086 Or accidentally punch you! I wonder if things like hugs are difficult? And how does she brush her teeth or use a toilet? No wonder she needs support workers, this must affect so many aspects of her life.
How could you thumbs down this?? I think what she is doing is so inspirational! Well done!!
UrAllDonks yes you're right. I remember seeing that video
I think she wears a chest guard too so it will protect her chest a little more? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's it 🤔
The gloves soften the blow
I watch this when I’m sad. It feels good to know that Jess is supporting tourretts.
her poor dog "am i getting a fucking biscuit or not????"
🤣
I love this lady. She's adorable and so brave for speaking out about the disability. She is quite amazing for her unique way of thinking about the tics creatively and amazing.
I am so proud to have met Jess! :D
CallumSk8rBoy 👍
She is so adorable! I just love how she has fun with her tics too..
OBE waiting for you, you wonderful inspiration to us all.
Maximum respect to Jess. What a true, honest and humours woman.
As much as it is funny i do understand its hard and everyone joking about it should know she is an inspiration
I also have Tourette Syndrome and I really appreciate this talk. It helps me feel better about my disability, thank you.
I want to pet a hedgehog, eat a biscuit and watch Aladdin at the same time. She's amazing. I might have Tourette's but not as noticeable as hers.
Aladdin dies! Not really.
I love herrr. She's probably one of the most influential people I've ever seen. She's so confident and not afraid to speak up about this condition that really no one but the people with it are able to fully understand.
This video is better with subtitles.
Honestly this woman is such an inspiration to me and probably many more. She doesn't let her tourettes get in her way of living and she even finds some of her tics amusing. Which is a big help to people with tourettes because they can now find peace with theirs
Matthew Biscuit Hedgehog.
Such a brave women. Hopefully I can help people in the future. Cuz I have it to
I think she is an incredibly brave, smart young lady, I admire her very much for raising awareness. Keep it going, you are making a difference!
Is it just me or does anyone also start to not notice her ticks after a while!?
I stood up and apologized at the end of this even though it was a recording. She is amazing!
What triggers tics? Is it anxiety? Or do they happen without any triggers?
Nothing triggers is, it is always there. It does sometimes increase when under stress or anxious.
Fascinating. This just shows that our brains are basically complex circuits, which sometimes get wired incorrectly.
i also have tourettes syndrome and i heard that it will not go away. when i was 6 it was very bad and i couldnt control it, but now (im 14) its almost gone but sometimes comes back
not just anxiety or stress, anything that gest me excited, makes my tourettes worse.
She’s such a great public speaker. She explains things so well and she makes it so interesting. She may have tics but I’m not distracted by them.
I had several tics in my youth and adolescence. I didn't understand what it was and was told by an adult that I looked retarded. It frightened me and made me and hurt me. I still have some minor tics, however, God helps ease them.
For having such tics, she is an incredible public speaker and educator!
Biscuits and hedgehogs two of my favorite things!
I love her voice. She has one of those beautiful voices I could listen to for hours.
Boy if I had a dollar for every time she said biscuit. I'd be ok for a long time. Lol.
You'd have 328 dollars
thank you so much for sharing this. my brother has physical, non verbal tics and this was super helpful to show him.
Waiter:"What may I get You?"
Jess:"Biscit, a Biscit, no a crossa- Biscit."
Waiter:"Uh anything el-"
Jess:"Biscut"
Waiter:"I know do you want anything to drink?"
Jess:"Nope I have tourettes can I have a hedgehog, I mean croissant, please?"
Waiter:"Oh, Of course."
Jess:"Thanks hedgehog biscut."
Waiter:"Lol, another one?"
Jess:"That wasn't a tick."
twenty one killjoys l-/
Uh..
SHES SOOO AMAZING! POWER TO YOU JESS❤
Nabisco stock just went through the roof
i found it hard to filter through her ticks and listen to her message at first, but after a while I was used to it and she's a very good speaker and has a lovely voice. :)
if I had a biscuit for every time she said biscuit...
I REMEMBER SEEING THIS WOMAN A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO OMG IM SO HAPPY THAT SHES GIVING THIS TALK
Drinking game: take a shot every time she says biscuit
***** Eek that's awful! Tics are the worst :(
+sTaTiiC BlaDeZ i kick myself on a good day but when i am bad i slap and punch my face and also scream as loud as possible.
i had a tic once because I was given haldol at a psychiatric hospital and it caused a day-long tic where my neck would twitch I couldnt control it.
I want biscuits now
❤This is a very wonderful, intelligent and well spoken speaker. I wonder after 11 years how and what she is doing now.
"I'm imagining you all in bikinis" 😂😂😂😂 omg
You are awesome for doing this, and you are a really good speaker even with your condition, honestly if I went up on stage I would be a stuttering mess and wouldn’t sound as clear and descriptive with my wording as you. It’s cool to see people have to push themselves harder than the average person and yet still be able to accomplish more than one.
Seems exhausting...
it's nice to see her laugh at her own tics.
8:04 everyone in the audience is bald omg😂😂😂😂
I have Tourette's and omg that piece represented what it feels like better than I've ever been able to with words. Nothing but love
And joes batmans cousin 😂dying
i recognise her from the tourettes syndrome documentary and i still think she is so brave and strong i hope she's doing well
