  • Throughout his career, David Braben has been exploring what is possible to achieve with computer technology. From developments in gaming theory to best practice in teaching computer science to children, David has always been at the fore.
In this TEDx talk, British video game legend David Braben describes how algorithms can create entire worlds and why rules can be beautiful.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Its amazing how much detail you can input to procedural generation, David spoke of viscosity of the atmosphere, clouds forming off mountain ranges etc.. but there is so much more he is doing with it at the moment especially with the landing on planets part of the game he's currently working on. His work is awesome & should be heralded for the technical and beautiful creations that he and his team are working on. I tip my hat to you David & all at Frontier Developments.

Actually the real Universe is procedurally generated which is why we see fractal patterns in everything and why maths can be used to predict natural events, thus if we ever back engineer and simplify to a unifying theory we will have found the seed for the Universe.
Of course that doesn't solve the issue of who or what seeded it - if anything.

It was me. Sorry, had some dodgy chicken. Lot's of seeding went on that night.

What is he talking about? I've only been to a dozen systems in the game and already seen all the patterns. Take your own advice Braben.

doltBmB I think you will find this will change (soon!) when they release more information stored within the Stellar Forge engine.

+doltBmB Hm? I've been playing the game for about a thousand hours now, been to the center of the Milky Way and back, and even then some systems still surprise me.

doltBmB Not at all. Every other few systems. At least it's realistic. Space is huge. Things are bound to look similar.

the dislikes were covered because out of 25k views,
    500 likes.
3500 dislikes from upset owners of the game this mans company lied about and continues to lie about.
