  • Mrs. Hughes understandably disagrees with Mr. Carson on where they should hold their wedding reception. Carson wants it to be in the Great Hall of Downton, but Mrs. Hughes does want to feel like a servant on their wedding day. The night before the wedding, Mrs. Hughes and Cora have a misunderstanding over a coat, but later on, Cora gives a sincere apology about her behaviour and gifts Mrs. Hughes the coat. Mrs. Hughes and Carson finally get married and hold their reception at the schoolhouse.
    From Season 6 Episode 3: Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson disagree on where their wedding reception should be held. Lady Mary reassures Carson that their reception will be held in the Great Hall of Downton, causing trouble between him and Mrs. Hughes, who doesn’t want to feel like a servant on her wedding day. Later, Mrs. Hughes and Cora have a misunderstanding over one of Cora’s coats, resulting in Cora losing her temper. Later Cora apologises and gifts Mrs. Hughes the coat. Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes have their wedding at St. Michael and All Angels Church and their reception and the School House.

    All of these comments hating on Cora for that business with the coat... yes, she overreacted horribly, but I think the important bit here is that she recognized that she behaved badly and apologized to Mrs Hughes. Honestly, that apology scene was one of my very favorites in the last season!
    And that wedding was so beautiful. All in all, this episode was so sweet, and tears of joy were shed from my part. That apology scene, my favorite couple in the show getting their beautiful, well deserved wedding, and Tom arriving at the end!!

      I agree, Cora has always shown respect and care for the people that work at Downton. Based on circumstances, I think we all are guilty of "snapping" at someone at one time or other. Cora was quite sincere with her apology and went an extra step and gave the coat to Mrs. Hughes. In those days, the Lord and Ladies did not usually apologize to their servants even when they were wrong.

    • @babablacksheepdog
      @babablacksheepdog 4 ปีที่แล้ว +115

      I thought she reacted how anyone would react if they found someone that worked for them in their bedroom, trying on their clothes. Imagine if you were staying in a hotel and returned to your room to find the cleaning staff trying on your clothes. How would you have reacted? It's one thing to be a kind, understanding and respectful employer. It's quite another to allow your employees to do whatever they like without consequences. I expect that her reaction also had to do with the fact that she was tired and upset about another matter, and that she was completely blindsided about Mrs Hughes borrowing one of her coats for the wedding. Mary had agreed to it, without bothering to inform her mother, so Cora (the person who should have been asked first), ended up finding out about it last. Had Cora been asked first, I doubt she would have said no to Mrs Hughes in the first place, since she has often shown kindness and consideration for her staff (for example, offering to take care of Mrs Hughes when she thought she might have breast cancer). It was just that the decision was taken away from her, and I doubt anyone would be happy about that.

    • @nazgullord3198
      @nazgullord3198 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @@babablacksheepdog Yes, I think it had all to do with her having had a long day, and being tired and annoyed and not in a very good mood altogether. That, and her not knowing about Mrs Hughes burrowing the coat (though if I may speak in Mary's defence a little, she did try to tell her, Cora just went straight to her bedroom before she could manage). I am honestly bemused by these comments passing such harsh judgements on Cora, as if they didn't ever snap unnecessarilly on someone on a bad day.

    Honestly, I don't blame anyone here... This is a wonderful example of how good intentions can clash and cause a problem. First, Mary loves Carson and TBH, Carson did wanted to get married in the house as he sees Crawleys as his family (until he realized that Mrs Hughes wanted something else). Mary had no objections in telling Anna that they could borrow one of Cora's coats and I have no doubt that, if Cora hadn't been so exhausted and angry, she would have been much kinder. As she has always been.

      She has her ups and downs, like your average human being. A central theme of Downton Abbey is the nature of humanity, a reflection of our very own humanity. Mary's good nature is seen with her good intentions asking for the wedding to be in Downton, even though her approach was too forced, part of her bad nature. However, when her mother Cora caught Mrs. Hughes, Patmore and Anna in her room and angrily snapped at them (a consequence of having gone through an awful day and having a bad headache), Mary's good nature proceeded led her to remind her mother Cora about the importance of humility. Cora understood this and went on to apologize to Mrs. Hughes and Patmore. Anyway, this is why I love Downton, because I can relate to the characters. To me they are very human-- on the one hand full of grace, and in another, full of flaws that we are all guilty of at one time or another.

    Mrs. Hughes is my #1 favorite Downton Abbey character. She's smart, compassionate, efficient, and she knows when to be stern and when to be conciliatory. She also has a sharp sense of humor, which she often uses to puncture Carson's stuffiness. I remember once when he was going on about how he, and not she, was the servants' leader, and she just said, "Well, that's put me in my place."
    She's tougher than Carson, too. He huffs and puffs, but when James blackmails him over Thomas, Carson rolls right over. When Braithwaite tries something similar, Hughes steps to and backs her right down. I think maybe Hughes is tougher because she is able to bend when necessary.

    I think one of the things I like most about Downton Abbey is that unlike most of what the entertainment industry puts out, they actually permit for the possibility that many of the posh and elite folks of greater wealth and privilege are just as likely to be good, thoughtful and caring people...and genuinely kind. And that people of all stations and classes run the gambit of goodness or poor character.

    The one thing I loved most about this series is how the staff came to be so highly valued by the family in a time when it just wasn’t done. Servants were rarely treated so well by other members of the monarchy.

    • @lepolhart3242

      It makes me laugh when people genuinely think DA is real. Real life aristocrats would never have put themselves out for their servants like the Grantham family did. It would have made the family look bad (as they had to keep appearances within their own class) to be seen to be too benevolent to their servants as everyone had to know their place. No way would aristocrats would have attended a servants wedding, it wasn't the done thing. Social classes stayed seperate from each other and you didn't mix socially.

      @@sebastianlodge7549 I know because my grandmother was a maid when she was young(she's dead now). She was born in 1914 and worked as a maid for a few years before getting married. I also have looked after many elderly people, some were domestic servants and told me about their experiences. I've also worked in customer service jobs and served modern day aristocrats who they and other rich people were in the majority not very nice. The poorer customers were often the nicest. I also read alot of book, articles and watch alot of documentaries and videos of real life testimonies that give an accurate picture of life in those days. Downton Abbey is a well acted, enjoyable, glamorous TV show that obviously has big budgets but there is very little that is accurate about it. Upstairs Downstairs is a low budget version of Downton Abbey that was made in the 1970's but is more realistic and well acted. I think what's happened in more recent years is that the entertainment industry is overrun by lefty liberals who have a rose tinted version of history which is a disservice to people who actually lived through it. My grandmother would have laughed at people's sheer stupidity to think that these tv shows are realistic she would have told anyone in a blunt way to get through to them how it really was. Nothing wrong with enjoying TV shows like DA but they're escapism nothing more. Some novels are more realistic than others like Catherine Cookson and Thomas Hardy which are mainly set in Victorian times and early 20th century.

      Ok so you have spoken to one half of the side good to know.
      I’m not disagreeing that some nobles were bad, I’m just saying that there is good and bad everywhere, low and high standing people.
      So giving a blanket statement to all of them is a bit over the top.

    • @lepolhart3242
      @lepolhart3242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@sebastianlodge7549 you are right that there are good and bad in all walks of life including all social classes. The point I'm trying to make is that aristocrats considered themselves and might still do way above servants in the social heirachy as aristocrats were much richer and privileged than any servant. Aristocrats held alot of power being landowners and powerful businessmen. Historians have said that servants were seen as nothing more that how modern people view their washing machine. If majority of servants were so well treated then how come many ended up in the workhouse when they became too old or ill to work even though they gave their lives to service and deserved to be looked after in their old age after working so hard their entire lives(some aristocrats did do this but not many). The workhouses (victorian concentration camps) kept meticulous records so show many servants ended up there. Also after the 1st World War many servants did not want to return to service after seeing so many young men die needlessly. Many servants left in droves from about 1920's as better jobs and new technology gave them better opportunities. Aristocrats recorded that it was difficult for them to find servants at that time. In victorian times they had the view of the poor deserving to be poor as they were thought to be lazy even though they worked the hardest. It was the Aristos who had it easiest as they didn't work for a living which is the hallmark of being classed as an Aristocrat! I don't have a vendetta against Aristocrats I'm simply relaying facts and the harsh reality of life. The truth is the most important.

      Cora's only human. She said it in her apology that she was really angry about something else and finding them going through her clothes put her over the edge. When she calmed down she went back to being her usual gracious self and apologised. If anything it's Mary's fault for not telling Cora what she'd given the servants permission for, she really set them up to take Cora's wrath.
