  • You're staring at a basket about 130 feet away. All you can tell yourself is, "Don't leave yourself with a long putt...don't leave yourself with a long putt." Sweat starts dripping down your hands, you grab that chalk bag, and your 30 seconds are almost up. The disc flies out of your hand....and you have a 35 footer in front of you. Many players struggle with recreating consistent upshots, and they can become a huge mental tax on your round. Having to "save par" from ranges beyond your comfort level can take out all the fun from a phenomenal round.
    What if there was a way to make it easier? What if I told you there were some simple steps you could take to start finding confidence on those upshots? You're in luck! We are going to dive into a short series focusing on all things upshots to bring you exactly that. This series will be different than others as we have a special guest with us during this one! Michael Strauss has coached many players throughout his career, and I'm excited to partner with him for this all encompassing series on upshots. In part 1 we're going to discuss the foundations of each upshot. With these principles and ideas you'll be able to not only park the disc next to the basket, but also be able to give some of them a chance to go in! What are those key ideas? You'll have to watch to find out!

    RC strikes again! Been having trouble with up shots/approaches lately and BAM! RC comes out with a video addressing the exact problem. Every time I'm noticing an issue in my game RC comes out with a video about improving that precise issue within a week. This is the 4th or 5th time. But it could just be that most of my game has issues that need improvement, but as long as those boxes are getting checked I'm happy as a clam.

    Coming from an Ultimate background, I had been using a lot of flicks for my upshots that worked ok. But after watching this video, I've practiced this shot in my back yard from about 100' to about 40'. My first 4 throws from about 60': 2 went in the basket, 1 hit the basket and the last settled within 10'. I had the same experiences on the course. I've been struggling with this part of my game lately and these videos are exactly what I needed. Keep 'em coming Robbie!
    Update: I was able to go to a football field and determine how far I could throw my Mercy putter in a fixed stance, without turning my head (about 180'). The next day I went to a course and one of the holes was...185'. I trusted my earlier practice distance and was able to park my shot within 10'. Very cool way to manage distances under 200'!

    surprisingly being a 3 month old baby disc golfer, my approach shots have actually been the most outstanding part of my game from alomst day- one. Getting my tee shots to land on the fairway consistently has been my biggest problem, but field work/practice has been correcting that problem. Now the putting thing is next on the list. QUESTION ROBBIE? Why does the PDGA keep track of Circle "2" putting, when it clearly say's in the Rule Book that the "putting area" is only 33 feet ( 10 meters) from the basket??

    My favorite upshot tip is this: jump putt like KJ, do that inside your range. Outside that range, forehand! If you gotta backhand, throw with a putter grip and dont turn your shoulders away from the target. That way it feels like a throw but you physically can’t throw it far enough to get in trouble (this is good out to about 150’ for me, any further and I am comfortable just throwing the disc normally). If you need even more power, turn your shoulders a little without taking your eye off the target

    Are Flick up shots a thing for more seasoned players? Having a heavy ultimate background I will Flick almost anything from 40+ feet. I feel that I have a better chance of them settling near the basket if they don't connect. I know the pros run all kinds of puts but I'll take a par if I can get my upshot parked, instead of a real risky bird-ogie situation. Great vid I will try the high elbow and higher wrist combination soon. Keep them coming

      @@michaelstrauss2312 it was a perfect fall weekend here in Toronto 65F and sunny.
      Wind played a role but I shot the lights out Saturday going -7 (best round ever) Sunday playing on lead card finished with -4 round. Went for the eagle on 18 to try to finish 2nd and went long out of bounds.
      Finished with T6 MA2 -11 Only 4 bogies. So proud.
      We played on a temp golf course and the rolling hills made for great shots and death putts everywhere.
      And the highlight was Thomas Gilbert shot -30 to take the tournament, got to meet him and get a huck face stamped disc for my boy.
      All in all this weekend cemented my addiction to disc golf.
      Thanks for checking in. Winter is coming and I will be working with a net in my basement to get that backhand timing down!

    i know this vid is upshot focused, but i've never heard of someone talk about a back vs front loaded grip. I've always had blisters on the tip of my ring finger when throwing, and i have always had a back loaded grip apparently. I wonder if that's costing me some distance lol.

    • @andruboine
      @andruboine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you stack your back three fingers? Mike showed me that a few weeks ago and it stopped the blistering for me and gave me even more control. It was uncomfortable at first but now it's normal.

    Oh... My... Goodness .... just as @Chris Davies said - "GAME CHANGER"... I think I'm going to watch this video 4-5 times a week for the next couple of months (not joking - for real)... Question: would this also help form issues in driving off the tee? getting the form right at 100-150 ft??? I'm assuming so? but just making sure?

    • @RobbieCDiscgolf
      @RobbieCDiscgolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! That's something I try to highlight often! If you can master upshots from that range, then teeshots from the same range are no different! Just better footing!

      @@michaelstrauss2312 I'm beginning to notice a difference off the tee - DEFINITELY see and notice a difference on upshots, and finding my comfort circle around the basket. Finding that circle makes the upshot SO MUCH easier - there's no pressure to have to "get as close as possible" when I'm comfortable at a 20 ft. radius from the basket. The angles for upshots helped too - and how to actually "throw" the shot (body language, arm, hips, follow through, steps/no steps)... it's literally the "game changing" moment so far in my disc golf game... yet I know there's SO MUCH MORE to work out.. but it's the baby steps for sure. This off-season is going to be pretty intense (it's not going to be an "off-season" for me...) Thank you Michael Strause!!! And Thank you Robbie C!

      @RobbieCDiscgolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Upshots are traditionally thrown (similar to a chip in golf) where you're trying to get the disc as close to the basket as possible to ensure your final putt is as easy, short,, and simple as possible!
