    Here's some links, stuff from this one I actually liked, and stuff in general that I liked for the bar, none of the garbage though
    ALSO: The tool I use is called a Diagonal Cutter, your comments here are telling me that regionally at least a lot of you call them snips or side cutters which is fine, but where I'm from the only name I ever heard them called by (and the comments confirm this is widespread) is a slur for ladies who love ladies, an unfortunate abbreviation of Diagonal Cutter.

    I appreciate that you mentioned the people who don't have great grip strength. My disabilities heavily impact the strength of my hands, and being able to lean my weight down onto something makes it easier. I will say, I can see the double walled shaker being helpful for people like me who's hands become numb from cold super quickly. I can see why it wouldn't be great for a professional, but might be nice for a lay person who needs a bit of cold protection.

    If you've got an intended gift recipient who's into mixology, either get them a bottle of their favourite spirit, which will always be a hit, or the most obscure weird yet well-rated bottle you can find so they can have fun experimenting with it. They will enjoy it so much more than any gadget taking up valuable bar space and gathering dust.

    Last Xmas I was gifted two different types of “spherical ice” moulds. They did not make spherical ice. They instead made a mess in my freezer because one set sealed at the middle and would just leak sometimes if you didn’t “gently and firmly” seal it correctly, and the other would get so cold I had to use tools to split them open. I get more use out of my countertop ice nugget maker than I do out of those moulds. Sorry, ma, buy me glassware next time please.

    I bought the metal cubes for myself one day as a curious endeavor. I like a single ice cube of pure water in my whiskey to help break down the alcohol and distribute the flavor of the whiskey to a more palatable feature...especially to newer whiskey drinkers. And when i put them in the fridge I was surprised at how cold they felt, like holy cow they were cold...felt colder than the ice I had in my freezer.
    I regret that train of thought, because well...it didn't chill anything...it took forever for the warm whiskey to "chill" and it didn't really do anything different that I couldn't do by you know...putting an ice cube in or cooling my glasses...or really anything. It was just an awful product that had me laughing by the end of it. Mainly because some asshole advertised this as a legitimate way to enjoy whiskey, secondarily because i believed them and thirdly because of all the things in the world that that material could have made...it made those, and so i still use them as a novelty...because well I have no other choice. It's that or the garbage...so instead I give cheap whiskey to guests I don't like chilled by cubes I don't use...

      Totally. Even a small bottle is awesome because it gives me a chance to try something and see if I like it, rather then buying a big bottle and finding out its not my thing. Sometimes it feels like a gamble when you purchase an average size bottle because it is pricy and if you don't like it, your stuck with it. Here is my gift guide now that I think of it, companies putting out an arranged box of small bottles of their whiskeys in tasteful recyclable packaging. I would love that!

I don't buy glasses every year because that would be a lot, but I feel like it's the same as getting someone socks. OXO is weirdly and inconsistently great but overbuilt and a little bit sucky. And I realize that statement doesn't make a lot of sense.
      But I bought their cookie stamp a couple years ago and it makes a damnably perfect wreath shaped cookie every single time to the point where I'm reasonably certain I could shove molten plastic into it and start stamping my own ornaments.
      Conversely their mandoline is way too complicated and overpriced for a tool I could pick up at the local asian market for less than half the cost.
      So I guess if you see an OXO thing at Target and you wanna grab it go ahead and watch someone review it on your phone right in the middle of the aisle before you put it in the basket. For the more in-depth reason why ice is better: melting ice is actually 2 processes that involve absorbing energy: changing the temperature and changing the state. The latter almost always takes much more energy to do. To melt a 30g block of ice takes ~1.2kJ to bring from -20C to 0C (at which point the energy goes into melting the ice), and ~10kJ to melt it all.
    A 30g hunk of granite, on the other hand, take from the same freezer, can absorb 0.83kJ before it is back at room temperature.
    They are just bad, they physically can never work.

      To add to this excellent answer: it applies to both the stones and the bullets equally. Neither one really works to chill a drink very well. However, the stones don't work far worse than the bullets don't work.
      The reason is that stone is generally a terrible conductor of heat, while metal is generally a pretty good conductor. When Greg held the bullet and said "this is colder"? Assuming they've both been in the freezer long enough for the temperature to equalize, that's not correct! They're both at the exact same temperature when you take them out.
      But! The bullet feels colder, because it's absorbing the heat from your hand much faster than the stone is. The same effect happens when you put them into a drink. Neither one will really cool a drink, but the bullets will at least lower the temperature much faster.
      As to the question of what kind of man owns a set of whiskey bullets, I can answer that as well: one who was gifted a set by his girlfriend.
      Why SHE bought them? Dunno. Guess she liked hers; she still uses them pretty regularly.

      I have the OXO jigger as well, and it is so helpful! The spout makes spills less likely, and you don't have to fill it to the tippy-top like Japanese jiggers. I spent an hour and a half looking through OXO's catalog whenI found them because their stuff is so smartly designed.

      I like my OXO Shaker. It's not the one Greg used, tho. It's the SteeL 360 one with a push-button seal. Might not be able to use a Hawthorn strainer with it, but that doesn't bother me much, and, ok, it is a screw-in top.

    Thought Greg was going go grab his pitchfork and go full on eat the rich there during his anti-Rabbit rant. I agree though there is a plague of instagram tools that look nice on a shelf and don't do shit and they are universally made out of awful materials, and designed to fail quickly. They just look nice and have a huge marketing budget.

      The whole industry is like that, though. Offshore mystery pot-metal, coated to look like stainless steel. Plastic that is... glued and formed in odd ways.
      Go to Starbucks and check out their thermos/bottle/etc selection. Fragile plastic, cheap metal, non-cleanable or impossible to replace gaskets.. all throwaway trash.

    I liked OXO before I became physically disabled. I've had many of their products for well over a decade and I love how quality their stuff is usually. Now that I *need* what their products can do, I really love having them. Like a can opener that's the only one I can use. Obviously not everything they do is gonna be gold, but they do have some good long lasting solid pieces.

      I'm super impressed with most OXO products from a design standpoint. It's just a step above everything else in usability. Sometimes that introduces new problems, and you have to then determine if the new problems outweigh the old ones, but even something as simple as a tea infuser is really well done.

    That sail boat decanter would be a great way to dispense a party drink. Make a large amount of a cocktail, put it in the decanter, and serve. Probably a pirate or sailing themed cocktail to go with the ship inside.

    • @Gilthwixt1
      @Gilthwixt1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When I make party drinks I make it by the 2 gallon batch and we usually have to do two batches in one night. That thing looks like it barely holds a liter, less than half if you're not drowning the boat. It'd need to be like 4 times bigger to be worth the effort.

    • @tygonmaster
      @tygonmaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      See the issue is there, if you're having a big party it doesn't hold enough for say 20 people or more, and if you're going with less you can just mix them up by hand. It sits in this awkward middle state where you have to have a small number of people, but if you have a small number of people, it doesn't need to exist. I would agree if it was like twice the size that it is it would essentially serve as a kegger, but why do you need something like this? It really is just a useless novelty. It's a pretty one and looks to be reasonably well made, but just as with the ladies as with barware, go for the one that has some personality and function over simply looking nice. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

    This is such a better / more fun way to do a holiday gift guide. There's so very little that a cocktail hobbyist needs as a gift. And if there is something they need or want, it's something very specific, and they already have one in mind. So many "drinker" gifts are just gimmicky weird nonsense designed to prey on people who have a hobbyist friend or family member and don't know better. And then it's going to sit in a closet for 2 years before being given to goodwill.
    Just ask them what sorta bottle they like, get them that. Maybe a single barrel if that's a thing for their preferred spirit.

    I was with you on most of that, especially the rant against conspicuous consumption, but I have to admit I like my Elevated Craft shaker. When making a cocktail on a cold winter night, I really appreciate not freezing my hands. The first shaker I ever got, before I knew any better, was a screw-top which regularly froze shut. So in that case, it was a solution to a problem I had. I just didn't know that there were easier solutions.

    The phase change of the ice to water takes an enormous emount if thermal energy, similar to evaporative cooling. The liquid that you mentioned in one of the whiskey stones was probably supposed to do something similar.
