The 5D Mark IV is also a camera released back in 2016... to see it coming so close with the side by side images is amazing.

Having switched from a 5D Mark IV to mirrorless myself (R5 and R6), you overlooked that the Canon's LCD is excellent with almost full-screen focus coverage. You could touch focus on the model's face in live view and, with servo enabled, it will track her movements pretty well. I otherwise agree with your overall assessments. I switched myself for many of the same reasons you did.

Very informative comparison.. I myself was gifted with a 5d mark 4 a few days ago and everytime I watch the review of this camera they always compare it to some new mirrorless camera.. which proves to the point that although this camera came out 2016 it is still a good camera.. I also have a sony a6100 and it is so easy to use because of the eyes autofocus and the flip up screen.. but many times I grab my canon and still use it.and I enjoyed using both sony and canon and use them both and maximize their functions..

I still love the photos that come out of Dslr like canon 5d iv. Even if the sony technology has come a long way i think the picture quality still doesn’t match the canon 5d mark iv. The photos from canon has the 3d look and has more film aesthetic to it. And last but not least was looking into a optical view finder, it looks like looking through the soul of the subject, compare to looking into a tiny tv screen.

Although I have an A7S3, and a A7R3, I just recently bought a used 5Dmk4. Mainly because you can get one super cheap today, and you can pick up used L lenses super cheap because everybody is upgrading to mirror less. I’m not switching to DSLRs, I’m just adding to my collection. I always wanted a 5Dmk4, but could never afford one, now I can, and it is still a fantastic camera. Plus the colors out of the Canon are way better than the Sony straight out of the camera. I’m not a pro, and I don’t like to edit photos, so with the Canon, I can just shoot and post with very little, if any processing. Now if I was a Pro like you, I would probably go full mirror less for all the reasons you mentioned. But if you are an amateur, and can’t afford the latest and the greatest, you can get a used pro camera setup, and save a bunch of money by buying an old 5Dmk4. There are a ton of them out there that are pretty much in mint condition, because most of them where not purchased originally by pros. I got mine a couple of weeks ago for $800, which is a steal if you ask me.

It's really down to personal preference, I think both look good and in raw I was able to edit most photos to look the same anyway. "during a wedding, when i'm getting photos on the dance floor it's usually extremely dark with optical viewfinder......"
Yes, but my old canon 7Dii is able to focus in totally dark with flash af beam. My sony a7riii fails. The sony try to focus using his ridiculous red led and 1/3 shots are out of focus. It's frustrating.
I also try with the godox x1s trigger that have an af assist similar to the reflex flashes but it doesn't make much difference :(

I think that although it cannot be denied that mirrorless cameras are more technologically advanced and offer an array of features that we won't ever see in DSLRs as they've been officially abandoned by camera manufacturers, good pictures can be taken in any system, any camera type (rangefinder, mirrorless, DLSRs, rearview) and any brand. Case and point your side-by-side comparison showed that your proficiency using the tool got you to the same end result. It is in a lot of ways a case of convenience, technology makes it easier to get there but sometimes the discourse you hear from brands etc, especially when there's a new camera coming almost makes you think that there's only way to get to that desired outcome. New cameras and technology don't make existing ones worse. I appreciate that this was not any part of your message in this video I just wanted to share it. Lovely work as always, you've been one of my greatest inspirations when it comes to portrait photography, all the love from Scotland!

Yep for sure. I picked the sharpest photos I had for all the comparisons, but I mentioned it throughout my video somewhere that the focus ratio on mirrorless was better than DSLR. I still got sharp photos on the DSLR, but I had to take extra images and had less to choose from to get there.

If you shoot wide open with fast aperture lenses, eye AF can actually be problematic leading to out of focus shots. Face detection will usually work better in those situations and most every DSLR made the past 8 years or so offers face detection in live view (mirrorless) mode.

Canon colors look better straight out of camera, Sony color is a little cooler and skin looks blotchy. I own the A7III and the A7IV and they clean up great in Lightroom, however I do a lot of commercial photography and when you are showing clients on set what you are shooting, the Canon colors will make you look good on set. This is why I bought a Canon R camera. I always had to apologize to clients when they were seeing shots from the Sony, and tell them that the shots would look better once corrected. The worst was when I would shoot people indoors lit with strobe, my god, does the Sony color look awful SOOC. Skins tones are terrible and blotchy, sometimes orange, and I shoot with Profoto. I love the Sony system, and still own several cameras, but for commercial photography of people, I use Canon.

Mirrorless cameras have much newer technology compared to the 5D Mark IV. Despite this, the photos from the 5D Mark IV are excellent. Sure, the lightness and lightning-fast autofocus of mirrorless cameras are great, but... have you ever wondered what happens to a mirrorless camera if it accidentally falls on the floor? Three weeks ago, my 5D Mark IV plus EF 24 105 L II zoom fell on the lens from about one meter high: only the UV filter broke! Guess what happened to a friend's R6 Mark I when it fell to the ground...
