    I just ordered the parts to R/R the crank on a nearly new HRX217HYA mower (85 operating hours). Nailed an obstruction & bent the crank. This uses the GCV190A engine, but the internals are almost identical. I have the factory shop manual, but there's really no clear instructions about setting the cam/crank timing. This video really cleared that up for me, so thanks a bunch!

    This video was the best! Good progression sequence, good photos and everything needed to be successful....thank you to the author and too bad more of the quick hits don't talk about the timing belt issue with the GCV 160.....my advise to anyone experiencing a no start condition after running out of fuel would be to 1. check spark plug for wear 2. pour a bit of gas into the carb behind the air cleaner and then if there is still no start, 3. pull off the valve cover to check the timing belt. I like the engine though as it appears to be a very mature design and nicely cost reduced to be parts minimised....difficult to mess up.

    THANK YOU. As far as I can tell, yours is the ONLY video that gets inside the cases in an organized manner. I think Honda needs to do a better job with the teardown info. GCV160-190 engines have some valve sticking and cam slip/breakage issues that many (I'm sure) think are inexcusable. Again, thanks.

    Just bought a replacement cover with the little "shelf on the inside to keep the cam belt in place. Honda part number 12311-ZL8-D00. Had my mower for 10 years now and belt had popped off 3 times for no obvious reason. Original cover did not have the shelf so I hope this new part will avoid the problem in future. Must have done 250 to 300 hours by now, oil change every 25-30 hours and a replacement plug every few years. Still runs nicely.

    Good concise video. I am looking at a piece of equipment with this engine. I would suggest that adding some arrows at the parts discussed in each frame might help.But still, this video went a long way to helping me understand this engine.

    Really enjoyed your video, I have a question. On the belt itself could you install it upside down or backwards? Some of the videos are seen on the GC 160 on the engine when they took the belt off and mark it so they could reinstall it the same way. I'm replacing mine so I don't have that luxury of marking it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @jakeandrus690
      @jakeandrus690 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only if you are re using the old belt, if using a new one just install it either way.

    What are the symptoms if the timing belt has to be replaced. My lawnmower runs very rough and misses. I clean the Carb but still is not good.

    Awesome video!!!... Ours just made a loud bang recently and now I can't pull start. Opened it up and I can spin the crank partially , but then it hit a solid metal on metal barrier. Friend suggested it was the timing belt. Do you think the engine is trashed at this point ? I know on my car it would be . But unsure if this is an interference engine.

    • @diggscleveland8245
      @diggscleveland8245 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a coupla things you should check. First, pop the valve cover, and check inside. Some of the problems that happen there are cam belt slip, split rocker arms and swallowed valves. The cam belt slippage rarely results in metal-to-metal stoppage, but check anyway. Cylinder at top-dead-center means the two cam alignment marks are parallel to the top of the cylinder head (see video). Reset the timing if it's off, and give it a try. To check for split rocker arms, pull the pins that the arms pivot on (they pull out with a set of pliers), and visually inspect the arm. While the arms are off, inspect the valve stems, the two solid steel cylinders that are pushed down by the rocker arms as the cam spins and moves the arms. If one or two are not there, or they are not both returned to the same exposed length, then the engine has swallowed a valve, and yes, it's dead. If both valve stems are there, and the rocker arms are good, then you need to split the crankcase as shown. The piston skirt may have shattered and gotten pieces into the crankcase. If so, you'll see metal pieces in the crankcase, and you may even see the shattered skirt on the piston when the piston is a bottom-dead-center. If that's the case, it's fixable, but you'll have to decide the parts cost/time vs. replacement cost to figure out if it's worth fixing. You can also check the gears while you are in there to make sure that there's nothing interfering with their mesh.
      Good luck.

    Nice video. But I still think the the GX engines are a lot better. Can't believe they use rtv sealant on the crankcase and valve cover. Honda went cheaper on these engines.

      You don’t know what you are talking about. Many many things take Hondabond sealer and not gaskets. Honda car manual transmissions have always used sealer and not gaskets on the cases. Use the real Hondabond sealer, it’s gray in color and not as soft and slimy like pure silicone like the blue crap in this video.

    Good presentation. I still don't understand why people call engines motors. You could have done yourself a real favor by ordering the cast cam cover and gasket and you don't have to mess with that shitty sealant. Cover: 12311-Z2A-000 Gasket: 12312-Z2A-000.

      Jeff Perry Other than the timing belt slipping (and the new cover fixes that) I've had no problems with it. The log splitter this was onis used commercially, hundreds more hours than if used by a homeowner.

    Can anyone diagnose my situation from this?... I have a Honda GCV160 that had been set to bag, but didn't have a bag on it, now it seems weak, doesn't want to move forward much, and stalls out. Do you think it needs a whole new motor, timing belt, or what?

      I’m looking through the comments for the time in the video when the cam and crank pulleys are out back into time, since my belt only popped off the cam sprocket.
      I do appreciate you and the time spent sharing the video and it’s new info to me about the new valve cover with belt guide.
      I’m wondering now though if the belt would just rub against the belt guide and wear it’s self out that way.
