Man, I hung in for 39 mins. Then skipped to the end! You did an amazing job and some laughs along the way! Great video! Had no idea that small of a motor would have a timing belt
I keep stiff foam packing materials to use as third hands. I keep thinking "I need to toss this in the trash" and I always go back to using it to support awkwardly shaped parts. That blade adapter was a bear to get off. I've had my share, and am amazed when I see videos where others just pull that off my hand. Never my luck!
Tom just a wonderful video on something that is very rare especially on a Honda that is this new. Not sure if there are quality control issues with Honda newer equipment or they just changed to a cheaper belt manufacturer. Also your right about having another helping hand, here at EP there is Jake and myself the OG so whenever an extra hand is needed we got it covered.
Yes sir feel your pain, lost my Dad in 1988 and he never got the chance to see what his grandson Jake has accomplished with his Company and TH-cam channel Eliminator Performance. I can guarantee you this, he would have had a very hard time comprehending the amount of money Jake can make per hour doing small engine repairs (even considering that his hourly rate is way less than local shops). I am sure your Dad is watching and very proud of what you have accomplished in your life and with your business and TH-cam channel. I see it this way: when we pass on we only move to the 4th dimension and like us in the 3rd dimension we can see what is going on in the 2nd dimension but they can not see what we are doing in the 3rd. So all beware and do good things because the 4th are watching!
Just a suggestion. Get 2 long bolts that hold the engine to the deck. Cut the heads off and make them as alignment dowels. It will help keep in place and line up easier. I have a lot made up for lining transmissions up in cars and trucks
You could do like I did when I couldn't hold up the spindle assembly on my Ford Expedition and start some bolt, when I changed the ball joints. After I realized there was no way I could support that heavy steel spindle with one hand, I realized that I had 2 scissors jacks about 5 feet away from me. That spindle was some heavy, but It only took 1 jack to support it, as I aligned the bolt. You could get one cheap scissors jack at Harbor Freight, weld or bolt some flat plate to the top of it so engines wouldn't fall off of the small jacking area. Then cut the handle and weld something on the handle that an impact socket of your choice would fit. That way, you could adjust the height of the jack instantly with the air impact. A piece of that white foam the use for shipping stuff would stop the engine from slipping off the modified jack while you were adjusting it. Tape it on there or use some adhesive to hold it on the jack. Anything soft would work to keep the engine from sliding off. An engine hoist would work too, but would probably be slower. And they never call in sick or cause a lot of government paperwork. They can't sue you either.
Honda hrx2174 hzaa mower new carb , auto choke unit, thermowax part ,valve clearance checked , compression at the 73psi won’t start.. It has spark . Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated….
I have a HRX217. I got mine in April 2013. I actually like it, I take care of it. I am on my 2nd grass catcher bad, a new one on the work bench for next year. I change oil every season, blades every 2-3 years and sharpen them also.. spark plug and air filter every other season... I also run a small amount of automotive fuel cleaner through it a few times a year. I burn all fuel out and wash mower underside and upper side before putting away for winter. I am located in the PNW. I had no idea this had a wet timing belt. I think possibly the dirty oil may cause the rubber timing belt to break down, so change that oil, dirty oil could be some what acidic, due to fuel dilution?
Tom, how do you align crankshaft with cam that only has woodruff key slots? I tried using them twice and was misfiring. The piston was not all the way up for TDC. So I took rocker arms off both valves. Turner it so piston was all the way up. Took belt off and aligned cam marks and slipped belt back on. Will find out if it works after rtv drys on cover plate. Did I do it right? Correct me if Im wrong. My mower is a hrx217k5hza. It has blade clutch also.
I put grease on blade adapter. I put two steel plates against engine and get some long threaded bolts and screw them thru adapter against the plates. As you tighten them, it pushes the blade adater off. Grease at factory during assembly would prevent this. Good laid back video.
I put a belt in a lawnboy personal stride (old one) what happened is the squeeze out of silicone inside engine from assembly came off. Got under belt on crankshaft belt came off. Also a piece in governor. Job fairly easy.
check your flywheel key, and pull the valve cover off and check your rocker arms, i worked on another one the other day and found a rocker arm loosened and came off!
Honda push mowers are no longer being made by Honda.. 2023 is the last year, so if you want one and can find one, Buy it now.. Inventory is slim to none at this time.
Toooom Doooobyyyy! Good video, Tom. Lots of good info. Honestly had to scroll through,(sorry, Bro, on day two of a whopper of a headache) but DID pick up some great stuff along the way. Thanks for sharing!
Tom, the engine started but ran like a bat out of he'll. I rechecked the governor adjustment and even the governor arm but still runs real fast. Do not want to go back into engine.
@@TomDobyMowerRepairI may have ground out why it was reving like that Tom. I neglected to tighten down the bracket that holds throttle cable and governor spring attaches to also. I reset the governor arm again. Will let you know the outcome tomorrow. TY for your guidence.
Did not help. Still ran fast. Took motor back off and split engine apart. I should of not reused the governor because the base that mounts flat to lower block was not flat. Ordered a new one with governor arm. Will see how it goes when I get the parts.
WATCHING TOM REPAIR THESE MOTORS REMINDS ME OF ALL I DON’T KNOW. MASTERCLASS STUFF TOM.

I buy every puller I see in garage sales and estate sales
heck yea!
When you check oil levels on all engines Remember that the engine MUST BE LEVEL, folks😊
Great video Tom. 👊. I learnt a lot from this one. Cheers Mate. 💯💪🦘😎
Great video awesome work
I think it’s the heat, so tired of the 100 plus days for 2 1/2 months and zero rain period
Crazy weather 😢
You must be in TX like me.
What was it doing before? I got a newer one that won’t fire. Has good spark. And compression. Flywheel key is good and valves are set good
Carb is also clean. Won’t fire off carb cleaner either
wouldnt crank
check your flywheel key, and pull the valve cover off and check your rocker arms, i worked on another one the other day and found a rocker arm loosened and came off!
Oh,,,you live in Ga.?? I live in Ga.... Lithia Springs Ga.
i'm just on the other side of Austell
Thrust plate goes the other way so round portion goes against belt.
Looked like it was the other way. My bad.
