Of all the walker variants the AT-TE does appear to be one of the more practical ones. With all of what you said about pressurization and from that one episode of the Clone Wars, I wonder why the GAR didn't use AT-TE more often in space battles or even under water with only the large cannon above the water. Seriously of all the Jedi Generals only Anakin, Mace Windu, and Obi-wan seem to be the only competent ones at actually being military generals. If I was the Supreme Chancellor (and also not a secret Sith Lord) I would have put the three of them as the Grand Generals (or whatever is the General equivalent to a Grand Admiral) of the GAR as their conflicting yet complementary tactics and styles would balance each other out.
i fell in love with this walker the second i saw it, the more i saw of its ability the better it seemed. its rapid deployment and stock piles and troop transport ability makes it shine, all tanks have weaknesses.
One significant design flaw with the AT-TE was the drivers compartment. The driver essentially sat behind a giant picture window. It gave the driver great visibility, but also left him very exposed. That said, I’d like to see the next video on the AT-RT and I’d also like you to do a video series about how far we are from having Star Wars tech here on earth
I think the AT-TE’s biggest flaw/weakness is its vulnerable underbelly; walking over a normal landmine could destroy the entire tank, as well as whoever’s in it. The AT-AT overcame this weakness by being 7 stories tall; but that very “advantage”, along with its MANY other flaws, far overshadowed any ACTUAL advantages at all. The much simpler, much easier, and far cheaper way to fix this flaw was to simply add good armor plating to said underbelly, because there wasn’t any at all and good plate armor that WILL work is better than average plate armor that MIGHT work.
I think the unarmored underbelly was to maximize the tank's mobility. If it had full armor coverage then it might not have been able to do some of its more impressive feats like scaling sheer cliffs. But I suppose for the Empire's purposes it wouldn't need the manuveurability if it was being used for patrols and such.
6:54 The KILLDOZER is an example of mechanized warfare. Over 10 years ago in Colorado a guy(who's name eludes me)got upset and turned a bulldozer into a tank. He laid waste to several buildings. Allen the things you present are some of the questions I've always made myself and things I've wondered as a kid about the star wars universe, and you answered many questions
It even stands to reason, that the main gun was retrofitted onto the Civilian Version of the AT-TE, which is why the gunner has to sit outside. If the only thing a vehicle is doing is wasting bandits and protecting mining outposts, you would only need the equivalent of an HMG for anti-personel.
The AT-TE was an infantry tank keeping with the star wars WWII ascetic. The concept of the MBT didn't come about till the later part of WWII and most countries still used different tanks for a variety of purposes throughout it, with infantry tanks being slower more heavily armored and with more guns to support infantry as they moved up on foot. Cruiser tanks ,to use the British designation, would be the light fast tanks meant to exploit holes in the enemy lines such as the republic saber tank and where meant to work together with there heaver brothers each covering for the others weakness.
I agree with the points made in this video. I think the AT-TE was very well designed, and was versatile enough to be used in some interesting ways. I think it would be even more useful if its design was more modular. For example, the dorsal mass driver cannon could be replaced with a similar cannon mounted in such a way that it's capable of indirect fire. In such a configuration, a group of AT-TEs could act as a mobile artillery firebase. Other options for replacing the dorsal mass driver cannon are an anti-aircraft turret, or a turreted missile launcher. The AT-TE has been my favorite walker in Star Wars ever since I learned of its existence. It helps that it's far more practical than an AT-AT, which itself made an impression on me as a child. Edit: Another change I would make to the design of the AT-TE, is the exposed gunner on the dorsal mass driver. Never made sense to me, glad to see it being called out here.
Best feature for me was not just that it had 6 legs rather than 4 like the AT-AT. It was what those legs were able to do. If you look at all other Star Wars Walkers, they are in a very fixed position, with only a small arc of movement for momentum and turning. the AT-TE at 2 different sets of legs, each moved in a different way. Two heavily armoured support legs in the middle with four more flexible legs front and back. This in conjunction with it's flexible mid section not only enabled it to turn sharper than most walkers but also flex up/down over terrain. This can be observed best in the Clone Wars introduction movie. This movement of the legs not only gave the Top Gunner 360 degree firing arc because it was on top of the tank, but also enabled the tank to pitch to give the gunner a higher or lower firing arc as needed. In addition, as seen in the video here, the vehicle can be angled into enemy fire to act as a bunker for the infantry blocking fire from going under it's belly.
When I was a kid, my favourite Star Wars vehicle was always the AT-AT. Always. When I first saw the AT-TE in the films and more predominantly in The Clone Wars series, I wasn't overly impressed and thought it was a poor knock-off. It wasn't until maybe the third watch of the animae series that I really came to appreciate and eventually love the AT-TE. And now it's my favourite Star Wars vehicle!
This is cool shit. We all know that this is sci fi info but I love this. It reminds me of my childhood when I was trying to figure out how different star wars vehicles worked. I got the star wars book that showed cut aways of the major vehicles, showing the inside and storage etc. I thought it was the coolest book ever. I love what you are doing
For me the AT-TE reminded me of the Armadillidiidae (more commonly known as a pill bug, roly poley, or doodle bug) which, fun fact, is actually a crustacean.
8:54 the AT-TE main gun did have the power to destroy almost any enemy heavy vehicle and piece of artillery, the only reason the one show in Rebels didn't destroy the AT-ATs when aim for the underbelly its because it was an old walker by that time and it was deteriorated, thus it didn't have the necesary firepower to defeat the imperial walkers, but one in good conditions could easily kill an AT-AT when aimimg at the underbelly, and besides, we all know the degree of armor than an AT-AT has, atleast in the superior parts
Ironically Walkers are one of the things that really got me hooked into Star Wars in the first place the Jedi/Sith aspect came later. And they're still one of my favorite aspects of the SW universe despite their flaws. I like all of the designs but still kinda biased for the AT-ST, maybe because it's featured in most Star Wars games I played growing up.
I think this thing would look even better with some of its glaring flaws removed and the form following function a little more. Imagine an AT-TE with the cockpit section removed and thus having a sloped armoured front plate like a proper tank. The front and rear anti personell lasers could be moved slightly more to the sides of the vehicle, so that they can cover the side blind spots of the AT-TE a little better. And finally, the most important bit: The roof could be flattened a little bit to make space for an actual proper main turret, fully enclosed so it protects the gunner better. Think of a turret similar to that of the AAT. There you go, AT-TE fixed and in my mind it would look even better.
I rather use the Stryker IFVs(including the 105mm cannon MGS model) than the ATTE due to much speedy, much accurate and lower profile! Or an M1A2 Abrams tank!
You'd prefer that to an advanced walker that could wipe the floor with any MBT we have with just a single shot from one of it's plasma spewing blasters?
@@AnakinSkywakka The AT-TE can definitely not wipe the floor with any modern MBT. Like most Sci-Fi tanks it is conceived by people who gave no idea of just how good modern tanks are. But contrary to just the AT-TE atleast has a chance.
@@thefirstprimariscatosicari6870 Modern day MBTs are more maneuverable but even so, I doubt it's armor won't be able to hold it's own against the super heated plasma.
ahhh… I'm not sure I can un-see that tank on tank action.. The Stryker is exactly what came to mind to me too, given the AT-TE's main cannon. Very reminiscent of the big gun variant/model of the Stryker. Lastly, I agree - it's fun to "nerd out" on this stuff.
Move the bottom front guns to the side, move the back guns to the corners, put the gunner in an armored bubble like the LAAT gunners, make the windows sloping with retractable blast shields and create a rayshielded variant and you have the perfect mainstay tank.
Glad we got this video, honestly, flaws aside, the AT-TE is probably one of my favorite star wars ground vehicles, it's also an absolute shame the rebels (this is probably justified) nor the empire (this is not) failed to make use of them during the galactic civil war, much less spent the time and money to improve upon an overall good design
Great, video. I'd like to see more to complement the 10 Flaws maybe even go back to the ones already done to show the pros vs. the cons. As far as the CRV, I work for a competitor and it pains me defend it, but it is a well built little vehicle very well suited to dropping the kids off at school and picking up groceries.
From what I can tell in SWBF2, it functions really well as an MBT. It tanks a lot of damage, can weaken armor on large military cargo transports, and it’s main cannon obliterates everything
@@komradearti9935 Wait a minute, artillery shell? We are talking mines. And AT sub munitions work by spreading small AT shaped charges from shell or rocket over target area, they will explode only if they hit ground or roof of vehicle and not 100 meters away.
I love the AT-TE personally. I think it is by far the best walker that has existed in Star Wars. That being said, I do think the AAT is the better combat platform when it comes to the infantry support role. It just wasn't used to effect because battle droids are dumb I guess? Repulsorlifts meant that getting bogged down on soft terrain wouldn't be a problem and it isn't reliant on LAATs to bring them into battle. A shorter profile meant that it would also be more suited for urban combat. The center mounted gun on such a long vehicle that provided no protection for the gunner would both present major gun depression issues (which was listed as a flaw in the AAT video) and an easy way for a sharpshooter to disable the primary weapon of the walker. A main gun fixed to the underside of the walker would have been a much better design since it would allow for a much larger main gun, provide better protection for the gunner who would probably be both spotter and gunner to reduce crew requirement by one, and turn the AT-TE into a fearsome self propelled gun. Basically a more mobile mini SPHAT. The traversable gun is of little benefit due to its inability to effectively navigate urban environments and its sluggish speed when compared to flanking tanks like the TX-130. That was really the major flaw of the TX-130 is the lack of a traversable turret for its main armament that allowed it to effectively engage targets while zipping behind enemy lines. Its like whoever was designing the AT-TE and the TX-130 said "What if we give the tank that will sit back with the infantry and blow stuff up the traversable gun and the tank that will be deployed in companies capable of smashing through and flanking the entire enemy army the fixed guns? They'll never see that coming!"

The AT-AT was made to be impressive so the enemy would be demoralized, the AT-TE was made to be practical.
“Most sci-fi vehicles are designed more to sell toys than functionality.”
*looks at Halo’s Scorpion*
It is a tank that is Atleast twice the Height it needs to be, with an unarmored Cockpit.
Wow I did not expect Walker to be mounting another one still want insert National Geographics narrator.
Funny. The ATTE always reminded me of a rhinoceros beetle.
For me the AT-TE reminded me of the Armadillidiidae (more commonly known as a pill bug, roly poley, or doodle bug) which, fun fact, is actually a crustacean.
Always thought of it as a Scarab Beetle.
ATTE is better than Honda confirmed.
6:12 TANKS (Walkers) ON A SPACESHIP! Seriously I was just clapping when I saw that episode the first time.
What about 10 flaws of the 10 flaws series’s
Ironically Walkers are one of the things that really got me hooked into Star Wars in the first place the Jedi/Sith aspect came later. And they're still one of my favorite aspects of the SW universe despite their flaws. I like all of the designs but still kinda biased for the AT-ST, maybe because it's featured in most Star Wars games I played growing up.
i cant imagine an AT-TE moving at 60kmh, is there any clone wars episodes showing it?
*DEJA VU*
@@m3lee699 I have been to this place before
I think this thing would look even better with some of its glaring flaws removed and the form following function a little more.
If you want to use a wheeled vehicle so badly atleast choose the AMX-10RC or the B-2 Centauro instead of the overengineered shit that is the Striker.
@@AnakinSkywakka Modern MBTs armour can reach the meter of effective RHA thickness. That's a lot of armour to penetrate.
ahhh… I'm not sure I can un-see that tank on tank action.. The Stryker is exactly what came to mind to me too, given the AT-TE's main cannon. Very reminiscent of the big gun variant/model of the Stryker. Lastly, I agree - it's fun to "nerd out" on this stuff.
I only clicked on this because of the thumbnail
Move the bottom front guns to the side, move the back guns to the corners, put the gunner in an armored bubble like the LAAT gunners, make the windows sloping with retractable blast shields and create a rayshielded variant and you have the perfect mainstay tank.
WTF is that thumbnail?? How AT-APs are made?
No at-tes are female at-aps have to use there third leg to mount them walkers.
Wait a second.
Ten flaws with the mon calamari cruiser.
Top ten features that made the hailfire Droid great. Please bring it back Star Wars.
I thought the ATTEs were mounting each other to double their fire power.
*COUGH*
I love how “Blind Spots” was important enough to warrant theee sections dedicated to it. :P
the empire should use the AT-HE instead of the AT-AT
good one
Loved it because this vid provided so atte info
Here we see in the thumbnail 2 at-te mating
Rule 34 in action.
I guess those back cannons do more than fire
Most of the GAR's vechiels and ships are superior to those of the empire.
False.
@@Commander23c you're an idiot
@@Pancake-ss1xw he's not wrong, only 1 from what I know of though, the AT-ST, which from what I can tell, is the successor to the AT-RT
OH NO AT TE IS PREGNANT WITH A BABY AT TE
Baby AT RT
"Being the smartest girl at a beauty pageant". Oh God, you fucking went there 😭. Love your videos.
Wtf is the thumbnail
ChaSm it makes sense in context to the video
The thumbnail reminds me of the mating season of the at-te’s
Ahhh the beauty of nature!
Good thing those bugs can't aim.
*AGHHHHHNFDUJER90FERNIUVNVJVCBRERRRCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHFHFUDSHU9*
From what I can tell in SWBF2, it functions really well as an MBT. It tanks a lot of damage, can weaken armor on large military cargo transports, and it’s main cannon obliterates everything
10 flaws of the Honda CRV?
Now I want a "10 Strengths" series.
Unfortunately it's vulnerable to landmines
What are land mines but misunderstood proton torpedoes
Really? Hull is raised quite high and if one leg is lost then 5 are still good enough.
More vulnerable than an AT-AT but LESS vulnerable than AATs and tracked/wheeled vehicles is still decent enough for surviving landmines.
@@komradearti9935 Wait a minute, artillery shell? We are talking mines. And AT sub munitions work by spreading small AT shaped charges from shell or rocket over target area, they will explode only if they hit ground or roof of vehicle and not 100 meters away.
@@komradearti9935 ok but original comment said landmines not at sub munnition striking from above.
I feel so lonely these walkers are pissing me off.
Seriously thought this made my day.
And once they are out of the mother´s belly you feed the AT-TE calves some fresh Durasteel salad with Tibanna-sauce!
They'll never see that coming!"
its 1am here, do i get bonus points?
yes
