      I know that 5e has it as a statement that Druids "won't" wear metal armor or shields, they will however use metal weapons
      Still one of my favorite things was when someone asked in a Sage Advice Compendium(Back when that was still a thing) what happens if a druid wears metal armor to which they jokingly responded "The druid explodes"
      Though at the end of the day it's a fantasy world where you could just have your Druid wear something made from Ironbark or whatever other fantasy wood that is as resilient as metal

    "Heal only works on willing animals"
    This rule must've been written by a person who never took their pet to a vet. They are NEVER willing xD

    • @drakewarrior1013
      @drakewarrior1013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well, I've heard of many stories (and watched the videos of such events), plus can say from experience with our cat, that animals often can tell if you are trying to help them, and not just being cruel.
      For example, our cat can be visibly unhappy and wanting to leave if we are searching him for mites and trying to pull them off. And if we do it for too long, he will start to try to get out. But at least initial few minutes, he takes it and waits until we finish treating him.
      The shepherd that we had, who unfortunately died from some disease, definitely waited and watched with these smart sad eyes while we drived her to the vet. Sadly they couldn't help her. But she was waiting to be helped and knew that we are trying to help her.
      I've seen a video of a big predator bird stuck in a fishing net that was patient, allowed it's wing to be touched, and did not try to attack or even get out while the person cut the net with something (can't remember if it was knife or scissors).
      Some trusting animals even come to people if they are wounded or otherwise need some help.
      Of course, there are also animals with bad attitudes, or just those that don't trust humans. And can be risky for any person to try to help wild animals. This can happen, and happens.
      But definitely not all the time.

    About Heal animal: i'd apply the "rule of traits". The character has the animal trait? Great it works. It doesn't? Nope that doesn't work.
    Don't sleep on traits, they are a great addition to this edition (it took me a while to get to this conclusion but now i'm conquered).
    About proficiencies (particularly weapons/armors): i believe Paizo took into account that any druid wanting to go fight directly and not with spells will shapechange, and that will grant huge stat boosts. Like at lvl 12 shifting to a dragon and... yep, your base attack becomes +22, you're more durable and such. At this lvl a fighter is at +23 base (+25 by lvl 13). A bit of a difference, but you already know the fighter is OP =P In all seriousness, being a full spellcaster makes up for that, druids may be better off than melee clerics.

    One of the best classes in PF2 imho. Great focus spells, full access to spell list, Primal is arguably better than even arcane, better HP/Armor than other full casters, best animal companion class, and solid wild shape access for a few feats (really Order Explorer and Aerial form are all you need if you are Dex focused). This class is just really really solid.

    Beastkins gain the "Beast" and "Beastkin" traits, but not the "Animal" trait, so I'd say Heal Animal does not work on them.

    • @clanpsi

      But the Beast trait says it's simply Animal with a higher intelligence. Surely you can cast Heal Animal on a Pegasus.

    • @welcometogeektown

      @@clanpsi Not RAW. The Beast trait says "A creature similar to an animal but with an Intelligence modifier of -3 or higher is usually a beast. Unlike an animal, a beast might be able to speak and reason."
      It doesn't say it _is_ an animal, it says it's _similar to_ one. If Beasts are automatically animals, then you can command a beast just like you would with handle animal, and you can't do that with an intelligent creature. I know there's a certain amount of "this feels like this should work," but they did separate beasts from animals for a reason, and did not make beasts a subset of animal.

    Goodberry was errata'd quite a while ago. It no longer needs to be freshly picked (only "ripe" which means developed to the point of readiness for harvesting - so you can load up in town/forest and dry them out for adventuring), casting is now 2 actions instead of 1 hour, and it heals a little less (avg 7 now vs avg 9 before). It now strictly outclasses Lay on Hands in downtime healing potential.
    Also, it's a bit weird they went with the metal restriction but didn't apply it to weapons. Sort of misses the mark if the point is to go against the manufactured nature of metal...

    • @sirix500111
      @sirix500111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The main reason they don't apply it to weapons is the VAST majority of weapons have metal on them, and it would really kill weapon choice down to staff and club. In 1e, this wasn't /as/ big an issue as there was Ironwood to get around it, but I have yet to see Ironwood in 2e, and it was almost prohibitive in cost anyway. I think this is over all a good change, but to each their own.

    • @LordCyler
      @LordCyler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sirix500111 I don't particularly care, but this is a role playing game. You can't really say it's because they abhor manufacturered metal, to the point that if they carry a steel shield they lose nearly all their class features, when they can weaponize a spiked gauntlet no problem. It's silly.

    • @adisander
      @adisander 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LordCyler Part of the problem with outright banning metal weapons is that they'd lose access to cold iron and silver weapons, which depending on the situation can _suck_. I've personally run into that, and at the time chose that metal weapons would also be anathema to me. That vampire took really long to take down.

    • @LordCyler
      @LordCyler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@adisander Then give them a magical effect that mimics those weapons at the correct level. Otherwise don't make metal an anathema to them when in fact it really isn't.
      I find it utterly ridiculous that the source of Druidic power is all
      Druidic Power: "We abhor all sources of metal protection and will strip you of your powers should you disobey!"
      Druids: "But we can still kill things with metal right?"
      Druidic Power: "Oh yeah toats. It would be a little much if we went that far."

    • @adisander
      @adisander 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LordCyler Oh, yes, I agree, this was a personal choice as the player of the druid (as I agree that it's definitely more thematic to use non-metal weapons), and the GM hadn't thought to introduce anything of that sort. I can just see why Paizo took the easy way out of just allowing metal weapons instead of working in an alternate, balanced option.

  • @Captainpigraven
    @Captainpigraven 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I know others have mentioned it, but it might be worth adding a voiceover edit on Goodberry. It’s long been updated with errata and now works every 10 minutes. It’s a ripe berry instead of a freshly picked berry. It heals for 1d6+4. Given how important healing is in PF2e, and that these mechanics listed here are no longer accurate, I encourage the edit to offer the correct information.
    You might also consider a quick insert to specify the significance of the Leaf Order and Storm Order receiving an additional Focus Point. (In addition to the Focus Spell.) As the base class Druid also receives a Focus Point, the two aforementioned Druid Orders let their Druids start play at level 1 with two Focus Points instead of just one. To date, this is one of the most overlooked elements of the Druid class by most first time players, both in my campaigns and based on Paizo and Reddit forum interactions.
    Each class has a few more class feats sprinkled throughout that come from Adventure Paths. For example, all classes have at least one extra level 20 class feat. And the Druid actually has two level 20 class feats. They both kinda suck, but they’re there. Though introduced in Adventure Paths, these additional class feats are available to any player with a DM that grants permission. For any future videos when discussing class feats, I encourage a quick glance using the Archives of Nethys website. It tends to stay pretty well updated. It’s also updated with errata, so the spells & other game mechanics will be most up-to-date.

      @willswanson1840 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Look pal, you chose to come into this whole thing belligerent and have kept up that attitude throughout. Not for nothing, but you very quickly discarded your initial complaint of gatekeeping -- which, great for you, recognizing that it didn't hold water! -- but instead of dropping things decided ad hoc to adopt a couple of different gripes which incidentally happen to also be lacking in merit.
      It's my anniversary so I'm in a good mood and trying actively not to be a jerk here, but your whole schtick about not having the chops to discuss the matter is as empty and generic a critique as I've ever seen. It sounds like something a freshman writes in a comp 2 essay to cover for the fact they didn't actually do any research on the topic assigned. As it turns out, in this case, we do have a pretty good clue of the orthographic and phonetic evolution of the word rendered in English as "aegis." Both proposed origins for the ancient Greek (one referring to goats and another to violent motion) are consistent with the "EE-djiss" pronunciation, and stable orthography in the Koine Greek has it consistently rendered in a way that is also associated with that pronunciation. Now people are obviously free to pronounce it as they wish -- I've heard it as EIGH-djiss and even EGG-us and not blushed at it -- but it's fairer by far to say that the pronunciation referred to here is the "OG" one than it is to say that the concept of such a thing is bunkum altogether.
      Any pronunciation that makes it clear what's being communicated is functionally valid on equal terms with all other such pronunciations - including regional variants and cross-language variants. However, sufficient evidence does exist to make positive statements about patterns of pronunciation in the language and setting in which the word first arose. For all your talk of linguistic expertise, you seem to have forgotten the very elementary notion that observations can be made about both modern and historical usage.
      Peace and blessings to you.

    I'm currently playing a storm order druid that has dipped its toes into the animal order. I just want to say I am mostly wisdom based but I have good strength and good constitution because our party needed both a healer and Frontliner (also I'm an orc for orc ferocity) and I'm telling you this is some of the most fun I've had. Whenever I need to get up in the front line I can use spells like shocking grasp and shillelagh for close range and then I can use my order spell for ranged damage. On top of that my bird companion really helps with damage output and gives my shillelagh persistent bleed damage. I effectively am a scout for the party that can really hold my own in melee combat and use the power of wind and lightning to really mess with the enemy and even then like I said before my bird companion helps out a ton. Coming from dnd 5e and seeing the difference between pf2e Druids and 5e Druids makes me love the class and I think it is probably my favorite out of all the classes simply because I feel more like a guardian of nature rather than just another casting class with a flavor twist.

    Some suggestions to fellow DMs:
    1. RAW (and probably RAI), I don’t think you can heal the Beastkin as it’s missing the Animal Trait. As a DM I might allow it.
    2. Consider removing the Woodland Stride class feat and rolling into the main Druid class at level 4. As is it can only be taken by a Leaf Order Druid. But I’ve yet to see any Druid take it over more useful feats. It’s really thematic and useful in most campaigns, but maybe not worth the feat expenditure.

Especaily if the weapon also took on the abilities of any magical plants

    You go from the Heal Animal Focus spell, and remind everyone that it can be used every 10 minutes. Then you Go to the very Next Focus Spell, and forget that it can be cast every 10 minutes, which, YES, you can feed your entire party 3 square meals a day. 10 minutes to feed each person.
    Edit: but then I missed that it is an unusual focus spell, that takes an hour to cast? You can still theoretically give a normal party of four over the course of 12 hours, 3 meals each a day... That is a lot of verbal and somatic casting though.

    Sadly, the problem with the Druid is that the cooler the effect the nastier the anathema. For example, Nonat pointed out at "some goblins polluting", but what about a freakin' BONFIRE? They cause a lot of smoke, y'know... Imagine the yule celebration of a small village being interrupted by a crazy eyed dude who proceeds to be a wet blanket - literally - by triggering a freakin' STORM.
    Oh, and forget about raising a family if you're a wild druid... "Mom, where's dad?" "He's out there in the forest being a phoenix." "Can't he read me a story tonight?" "Oh, honey, you know that he can't stick around - he has to stay in the friggin' forest gallivanting with the bunnies. (sigh) I should have married the monk, at least he was just ascetic."

    • @kamencraftbrasil4367
      @kamencraftbrasil4367 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The examples you gave were quite extreme, a good druid wouldn't make a scene because of a bonfire because they would know certain plants and forests NEED to be burned down periodically to have a healthy life cycle, they would wait and recommend certain plants who require this treatment to be used a fuel, and a good or at least decent wild shape druid wouldn't have children and leave, they would raise their family in the wild.

    • @sirix500111
      @sirix500111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kamencraftbrasil4367 I would argue a fire is the least of a druids worries, unless its some kind of major assembly that is burnings coal and a ton of it at that. Fire burning most any kind of plant life is natural. Whole areas (looking at you California) burn YEARLY and is healthy for the environment. Now, I think most storm druids would take issue with Absolom and other larger cities and their heavy industrial focus, but they also can't do anything about it other then try to teach cleaner alternatives.
      On another point, I don't see why a wild druid couldn't have say...a cabin in the woods. They can't come to rely on processed goods, not a bit of comfort. As long as they are living off the land still, a cabin and a family should be 100% feasible.

  • @TheLandlockedViking
    @TheLandlockedViking 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Personaly, I think the restriction on metal armor is stupid.
    By the logic that processing ore into metal is an unnatural process cuz it doesn't occur in nature, the same should be applied to the process of turning hide into leather. Leather does not naturally occur, the materials must be processed and treated with outside materials.
    If someone (a game system included) is against druids wearing metal armor, they should also be against druids wearing leather armor.

    • @slykins2006
      @slykins2006 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The old school explanation for this in other systems has been that the worked metal creates a barrier or at the least interference in the link Druids have with nature. This disruption is disconcerting to the Druid. That's why they can still use metal weapons, because it is wielded and not something they are encasing themselves in. In terms of treated leather, it doesn't create the same barrier and is more conductive for this natural link.
      Kind of like a wifi signal. It goes through some material nicely, but put a think piece of various metals around and it has trouble.
