UnderSpin Tricks For Early Spring Bass Fishing! (Beginner To Advanced)

  • The underspin is deadly on early Spring bass! Whether your fish are up in shallow cover eating big bait fish, hanging on breaks eating tiny shad, or suspending on outside structure, the underspin can be adapted to virtually any conditions. Like any technique, there are small tricks that make a huge difference in your success and today Tim is showing his best trick for catching fish that aren't ready to fully commit to the bait.
    Underspins come in all shapes and sizes. Even with our "simple is better" approach to the technique we still find ourselves with 4 or 5 models on the boat at all times. Being able to adapt to changing conditions and different size baitfish makes a huge difference with this technique so don't be afraid to adjust your bait if the fish aren't reacting.
    When in comes to fishing cover, the Flashy Swimmer is key. When the going gets tough, you can't beat a Cool Baits. And when the fish are ready to feed, the Blade Runner and Hog Farmer will give you a strong hook and consistent action to land the giants! All of the baits discussed in the video are linked in the description below. All of the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

    One kind of video I've never seen from you guys is a swinging swimbait/swinging swim jig video! It has become my favorite way to throw a Keitech! My 1st swinging swimbait heads were the Hog Farmer "EWG Swingers" or "Swinging NED" & they caught me some nice bass & pike, & my first 2 musky! Now I'm playing with the Hydra Hybrid jig heads cuz of the patented hook changing system you can change the hook size or style to whatever you need! The Eco Pro Tungsten Swing Swim Jig has a split ring allowing me to do essentially the same thing changing hook sizes/styles like switching out to a flipping hook for an exposed hook! I have one rigged up with a light belly weighted hook on my swim jig to level out the fall rather that having it nose dive. The possibilities are endless! I would love to hear you guys opinions on them, give them a try & give us a video!

    Hell yes!! I’ve been looking for more baits I can use to fish for the big bass on a spinning reel. Idk why, I’ve just always preferred a spinning reel compared to baitcasters. My pb cameon an overhead spinner so it makes sense this method is just as effective.

    Hey Tim I’ve live on Cumberland and have been playing around with something lately. I’ll take the blade off my underspin and replace it with a sz4 or sz6 bladed treble hook. The blade is obviously smaller but it still gives you some subtle flash and I’m catching a lot more of the fish that just swipe at the bait. Anyway, great video and thanks to you and Matt for all the knowledge you share with us mere mortal anglers.

    Here in Australia I manufacture a ball head underspin but I do not put plastics fitted to them...Instead I tie bucktail or Marabou in combination with feathers etc....I also fit Colorado or Indiana blades underneath as I like to hop them down steep banks etc...From trout to bass in fresh water and many fish species in saltwater will devour a well tied underspin jig...my sizes as follows; 1/16th ounce with size 4 hooks for trout but I will fit size 1 for bass...1/4 ounce with size 2/0 hook fitted...1/2 ounce fitted with a 4/0 hook and 1 ounce fitted with a 7/0 hook...All hooks are fine gauge black nickel Gamakatsu hooks...I adapt many fly tying recipes for my underspin bodies...All my underspins have the hook exposed and I fish finesse with light braids connected to monofilament leader attached as I believe mono stretches just enough to aid positive hook sets...regards bjscustombaits Australia....

    Cool Baits just came out with a weedless version- haven't tried it yet but I'm looking forward to it. I love the normal cool baits for a 2.8 when you really need to down size but- it does get hung up quiet often. I bet I've lost at least 20 myself over the last couple years. That said- I think they're getting wedged in the rocks more than the hook is getting snagged- It seems tom work best when I slowly roll it over some rocks, so slow the blade stops spinning and just clinks against the rocks as you go over them. But that means every once and while you lose one cause the head is the perfect shape to wedge into a crack. If you're on a boat you can get it back usually but, if you're not- you're screwed unless you want to go wading.
    They need to make a underspin with football shaped head and maybe replace the blade with one of those odd thingies that Teckel puts on the back of their frog- it's like a blade but it's hollow and has a bb in it. It clinks and makes racket as it turns- like the blade hitting rocks on the bottom. I'm gonna make one- bet it works.

    I know this may sound like a dumb question to all you who are far more experienced anglers than myself but how is the best way to find out what the "size of the hatch" is? I just recently rediscovered my love of fishing after more than 10 years away and before just did it occasionally and never really studied. So please forgive my ignorance LOL but how exactly do you "Match the hatch"? Thanks again for all you guys do!!!

    • @connorf7122
      @connorf7122 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends if ur trying to catch biggens then just go bigger. If it is a tough day or u just had a cold front u might wanna downsize. It’s as simple as that. By matching the hatch it just means if u have shad then you’ll want white but if ur trying to mimick a bottom feeding fish suck as sucker, catfish, etc or even bluegill you’ll want a natural green pumpkin kinda color.

      Matching the hatch usually pertains to size of your bait. And a little bit of the color. For me, I would have to have eyes on whatever bait is being consumed by the bass feeding around. A hatch is basically a group or school of fish that were hatched around the same time. So matching the hatch is using the same or similar size bait as the ones being fed on at whatever fishery you are at, at the time. With an under spin, of course.

      Many times when you boat a bass it will spit up what it’s been eating. That’s how I know what size baitfish they are targeting. In the fall, the bait school near the surface, and you can often see them. IMO, matching the hatch is one of the most important concepts of catching bass.

      Thank you for the advice. I know the main place I fish right now has shad (or so ive been told) and a ton of Bluegill but I dont know what size the shad is. Since I have never actually seen them and given its a man made reservoir and its only 800 acres which is rather small for a lake, is it safe to assume the shad would be on the small side? I would like to become more knowledgeable before I take on a large populated lake such as High Rock lake or Randleman. Thanks again for the advice

      @@charlesk1140 Until you’re able to get a look at the bait fish in your lake, you can’t go wrong with the smaller swim baits that Tim showed. My rule of thumb is to try more finesse baits first. You can always upsize later to see if you can find bigger fish. If you know you are fishing where the bass are, experiment with different sizes until you start getting consistent bites.

    In the neck of the woods I fish at, I’m slowly seeing these swim baits and it’s rising up in popularity for me as I want to advance in the type of baits I like to use. My question would be for the smaller swim baits could you use with a spinning combo with like 8 lb line?

    Great video Tim always love getting up in the mornings and watching them before work one question ive made the switch to braid to leader when do u decide to use mono or flouro leaders

    • @buddymccormack8668
      @buddymccormack8668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard Matt and Tim say many times "mono leader" because it has some stretch, flouro doesn't have enough stretch and it could shatter when you set the hook.

      You're so far ahead, best thing to do is search "Tacticalbassin bed fishing" or "tacticalbassin spawn" and you'll find a lot of previous content that is very relevant.

    We are starting to thaw out, here in NY. I went casting, ie fishing from the shore, to a nearby creek, of course, nothing. A connected pond has ice thick enough for ice fishing. But, thinking ahead, which techniques would you recommend for the FIRST time I go fishing after that ice melts? Advice for a noob, desperate, newbie, addicted fisherman please!
