I read Ultramarathon man right AFTER Born to Run. It was the PERFECT follow-up as my mind was locked immediately on running 100. Several 100's later. Im in debt to Dean, he is a living Legend.
Thank you for this. It helped me get my head back in the right space to start running again. At 49, running is a new thing for me. I started this year and was up to 3 miles/day on work days and 5 miles/day on the weekend. Then, for some reason I stopped and then tried to get going again. I was doing 1.5/miles a day about 3 days/week. Today, after listening to this podcast last night, I ran 3 miles. (I would've run farther but I have to go to work). Thanks for the motivation.

Rob Pearson That’s inspiring. What changes in diet and lifestyle have you made? I have only done 5K walks, and maybe jogged a tiny bit. Just started leaning toward plant based, but only a few days at a time. Long road ahead.
@@WinstonKnows Thanks Winston. After my heart attack I was about 205 lbs (5'7") so overweight for sure. I started walking about a mile in the morning and again at night. For my diet I got all temptations out of the house, like Doritos and stuff like that. I started going plantbased, but it was hard to find the foods I liked. Over time I got better at it and now I'm 100% on a meat free diet. Once a week I give myself a day to do restaurants, where I obviously eat more calories than I would at home. This gives me something special to look forward to and I only choose places with really high quality foods. When you eat out only once a week, it's easier to get the best quality and tip like a rock start (spreading the positive vibes through giving). After I got down in weight to about 195, I started running just a little bit at a time each night. I've been at it for over 3 years now and can now run really far. It is easy to get wrapped up in social media and "being hard" and such. I tend to just focus on my process. As long as I'm driven, the future is great. I'm feeling like the heart attack saved my life in many respects. I'm down to 160 lbs now and running well. Next year I'm going to do my first ultras. My goal is to maybe whoop Rich Roll in a running race someday (only in a fanboy type of way, all good) since we're close to the same age. Rich's story gave me hope that I could do it. Now I know I could, it's just a matter of time to see what heights I can reach as I keep going with this. _Rob
@@WinstonKnows In a nutshell Winston, just keep at it. Small walks are great. I believe that walking might be the most underrated exercise out there, as the results can be awesome. For example, my little one mile walk each morning with the dog before work is over 100 calories burned. Then I have my oatmeal and head off to work. Just doing that small thing for a year helped me drop enough weight to ramp things up. It's all about just taking action. Don't let anyone, especially yourself, judge your workouts. Just do them and trust the process. Weight will go up and down and first, so never overly focus on that. Just do the walking and feel good about yourself for the choice. When you feel good about yourself, the rest will fall into place easier. My worst food binges in the past were always proceeded by negative self talk and beliefs. No disrespect to Rich or Dean, but these guys aren't super human. They are just like you and me and they have proven what commitment and drive can achieve. Keep watching them and stay encouraged. I appreciate that you are sharing your story and have made huge improvements in your life. I just turned 46 last Friday, and that is part of my drive to stay energetic and healthy. I still have meat here and there, but I noticed that I have been able to remember my dreams for the past 3-4 weeks in a row, ever since cutting back on meat and increasing plant based meals. How many marathons have you run so far? Also, I started using orthopedic inserts from "The Good Feet" store, as it was a bday gift from my Mom. That is supposed to increase my balance and keep my spine straighter. I hope so, since it is super pricey.

I searched Dean in Twitter randomly. I messaged him and told him how his book and story got me from zero to running multiple marathons. Yesterday re messaged me back. I'm so pumped. So I found this great podcast. Put myself on a 5 day water fast, I'm gonna drop a couple kilos and get the runners back on. I'm from uk but seeing out this situation in Sri lanka where I was tra6when lockdown started. Been here a year travelling but not running enough. Im back now. Thanks Rich. You're the best speaker. Dean sums up a large portion of my teenage life through inspiration and mental visualisation of what is possible for a human and what may be possible through my own mental fortitude. It's a feeling I cannot shake and will never go.
Love this, just wanted to point out that there is nothing wrong with bringing more out on the trail than you need especially when going solo and maybe you aren’t in great shape because you never know when you will get lost or twist an ankle and you may need way more supplies than intended. I’ve had 10 mile runs on rough terrain planned for an easy Sunday morning and had them turn into full day epics because I lost the trail or made a wrong turn and it’s 100 degrees out...I guess I consider it a safety net
Sometimes I just can't handle this Rich Roll California-attitude. Rich is a self made, rich, super man and has tons of friends and so on. Allways having equal friends on the show, takling about things that only few people can relate to, luxury problems. But, this interview, showed me that my life situation, being more poor and fucked compared in My optics, , also "just" is a life and it's mine and mine to deal with. Thanks guys, I really needed that, we're not that different after all.
Ivan Kizz-prinzip Jensen I really find it hard to figure out who Rich really is. He can seem arrogant even though he might not come off that way at all. Really hard to explain. I cannot figure him out. Nonetheless, I do love the guests he brings on and he is a fantastic host who lets them talk without interrupting (unlike some podcast hosts) cough...joe rogan...cough cough. I believe Rich is like most of us though. When someone like Dean comes on though, who is truly genuine, it puts things into perspective. All in all, I do think Rich means well and isn’t trying to shove some sort of motive to his listeners. All we know is what we see from him in the podcast. He’s probably gone thru his own demons we all do as humans.

read his book when i was in high school. wondered if I could ever do that and put the book down. years later I'm just starting to enjoy running. it's frustrating to end my runs at an hour when all I can think about is the joy of being on the move. The worst feeling is having to stop a run with feeling shin splints on the horizon... but then I remember I'm 28 and he had his turn around when he was 30 and I think, eventually I can get there too. I just want to be able to run for hours without injuring myself. I want to run an ultra. I love how all my other thoughts quiet down and it's just running.
I'm one of those people who wrote him with no expectation of receiving a response. He's literally the only "celebrity" that I've ever written to. I merely wanted to thank him for his inspiration and was blown away by that personalized answer. It's that responsibility to his fan base that keeps so many of us connected to him.
I had a similar experience with Scott Jurek: emailed him 9 years ago when I was looking at getting a dog to run with and he sent me a friendly detailed response in less than 1 day with suggestions on type of breed, training tips, etc. Ultra-marathoners are just really down-to-earth and cool people.
@@tennesseetrekker1951 Yes, I adopted my "Shadow" soon after I reached out to Scott. He's a poodle cross, now 9-years old. I typically run with Shadow 3 days/week, normally 2-3 miles but up to 10 miles on occasion. He's a fantastic companion and running with him is one of the joys of my life.
this man is beyond human, I've ran I've done 10km 10 miles and half marathons but since the lockdown I've ran 5 to 6 days a week, ok not 60 miles a day just 8km to 15 km, would love to try and ran 7 marathons in 7 days but you to train and get your body use to it, first by trying to run a half marathon 7 times a week

I can usually sit through 15 minutes tops of TH-cam but I was glued to all 1hr 38 minutes if this. It was truly fascinating and inspiring but most of all delivered in such a humbling way by two of the best respected runners today!
I'm so pissed.... I decided to go on a water fast this week to drop some weight and detox so I'm listening to this podcast getting inspired to get back into running. But I've suddenly got this sharp pain in my foot feels like a small bone break but I haven't knocked it or injured it. It's so strange. Hopefully it goes away with rest. But after listening to the guys I just want to go out running but can barely walk 😪😪😪😪

The story of Dean Karnazes, and especially that of David Goggins, etc., has given me a new PURPOSE in life. I have decided that I will soon start my journey towards this goal of climbing new heights and walking and running on trails. I am from Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, the 2nd biggest island from among the 7,107 islands of the tropical country of the Philippines, 67 years old, turning 68 this coming June, a SINGLE FATHER who brought up singlehandedly my children, who are a well-accomplished 31-year-old daughter and a son who just graduated from high school. I was a former Regional Manager of an affiliate of the world's largest bank for most of banking history, graduated Salutatorian from Grade School without much studying, was FAVORED BY GOD with a super high I.Q. which is shared by only 7,779 people, out of the 7.7 BILLION inhabitants of this planet. But I had to overcome 2 packs of cigarettes per day of heavy smoking, my heavy drinking of one bottle of Fundador Brandy per night, and from my MULTI-DRUG addiction, all COLD TURKEY. I have stopped smoking, drinking, and drug addiction, each in ONE DAY, though on separate days, without professional help, WITHOUT LOOKING BACK, despite super INHUMAN WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. So I don't believe heavy smokers, heavy drinkers, and DRUG ADDICTS when they say they can't quit. It is all a matter of perseverance, decisiveness, and being tough-minded. You have to be tough-minded when it comes to REGAINING YOUR HEALTH. For 50 years now, I have been addicted to Valium, a Benzodiazepine tranquilizer, which I have battled with for more than 3 years from 2017 until now, bringing it down from 80 to 90 milligrams a day to 7 mgs. per day now, ENDURING all the SUPER INHUMAN WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. Googling BENZODIAZEPINE WITHDRAWAL will bring you a super long list of INSANE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS, which have among them, BODY SHOCK, COMA and even SUDDEN DEATH. My stupid psychiatrists also made me DEPENDENT on antidepressants and tranquilizers. I have suffered OCD since I was 17, or for HALF A CENTURY already, have many injuries from my basketball, softball, pelota, karate, weightlifting, Sport Judo, Combat Judo, racing, snorkeling, and board sailing during my younger years. These days, I have high blood pressure, an enlarged prostate gland, suffer from brain fog, dizziness, chronic INSOMNIA. But, in God's KINDNESS and MERCIFULNESS, I shall overcome these challenges too. For someone who is a bang average ultra runner and never been competitive with any of the top guys Dean has done a great job with self publicity to raise his profile so high. He impresses people that don’t really know any better with feats of endurance but is rarely respected by his peers. Does say a lot really.
True, says a lot about those peers, doesn't it? I mean who cares what those supposed better peers think of him? They are merely begrudges because they want to live his live with that same publicity but are seemingly unwilling or unable to do what it takes to get there. But what really matters (and certainly more than how many mile you can in 24h): the man inspires tons of people to get moving because he's sharing his passion with the wider world, channeling the publicity he gets in a positive way - he makes money of that too. Good for him. He deserves it.

Running can be a form of meditation, perhaps not by traditional Yogi definition, but a modality of it's own. I'm a yogi and do both.

This is another great podcast...i did not know of (dean kamazas) before...wha a great guy and athlete...i was thinking ....i think this is the (same guy) who approached me running at Chrissy Field wearing a surf suit by the rocks.. he said can i talk to u for a minute? I said yes...he said ( I am a physio therapist and i see you kick out your legs as u run you are going to ruin your knees)...I kind of now that i see the podcast it was him...
I run 8 miles or more everyday, lift weights, and yoga.

The story of Dean Karnazes, and especially that of David Goggins, etc., has given me a new PURPOSE in life. I have decided that I will soon start my journey towards this goal of climbing new heights and walking and running on trails.
I am from Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, the 2nd biggest island from among the 7,107 islands of the tropical country of the Philippines, 67 years old, turning 68 this coming June, a SINGLE FATHER who brought up singlehandedly my children, who are a well-accomplished 31-year-old daughter and a son who just graduated from high school.
I was a former Regional Manager of an affiliate of the world's largest bank for most of banking history, graduated Salutatorian from Grade School without much studying, was FAVORED BY GOD with a super high I.Q. which is shared by only 7,779 people, out of the 7.7 BILLION inhabitants of this planet.
But I had to overcome 2 packs of cigarettes per day of heavy smoking, my heavy drinking of one bottle of Fundador Brandy per night, and from my MULTI-DRUG addiction, all COLD TURKEY.
I have stopped smoking, drinking, and drug addiction, each in ONE DAY, though on separate days, without professional help, WITHOUT LOOKING BACK, despite super INHUMAN WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS.
So I don't believe heavy smokers, heavy drinkers, and DRUG ADDICTS when they say they can't quit. It is all a matter of perseverance, decisiveness, and being tough-minded. You have to be tough-minded when it comes to REGAINING YOUR HEALTH.
For 50 years now, I have been addicted to Valium, a Benzodiazepine tranquilizer, which I have battled with for more than 3 years from 2017 until now, bringing it down from 80 to 90 milligrams a day to 7 mgs. per day now, ENDURING all the SUPER INHUMAN WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. Googling BENZODIAZEPINE WITHDRAWAL will bring you a super long list of INSANE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS, which have among them, BODY SHOCK, COMA and even SUDDEN DEATH.
My stupid psychiatrists also made me DEPENDENT on antidepressants and tranquilizers. I have suffered OCD since I was 17, or for HALF A CENTURY already, have many injuries from my basketball, softball, pelota, karate, weightlifting, Sport Judo, Combat Judo, racing, snorkeling, and board sailing during my younger years.
These days, I have high blood pressure, an enlarged prostate gland, suffer from brain fog, dizziness, chronic INSOMNIA. But, in God's KINDNESS and MERCIFULNESS, I shall overcome these challenges too.

For someone who is a bang average ultra runner and never been competitive with any of the top guys Dean has done a great job with self publicity to raise his profile so high. He impresses people that don’t really know any better with feats of endurance but is rarely respected by his peers. Does say a lot really.
True, says a lot about those peers, doesn't it? I mean who cares what those supposed better peers think of him? They are merely begrudges because they want to live his live with that same publicity but are seemingly unwilling or unable to do what it takes to get there. But what really matters (and certainly more than how many mile you can in 24h): the man inspires tons of people to get moving because he's sharing his passion with the wider world, channeling the publicity he gets in a positive way - he makes money of that too. Good for him. He deserves it.
