I watch your sometimes. Mary, I don't hate your channel but why do you narrate them like a dang romance novel ? I'm not even sure what you're talking about half the time. I admit I'm not too educated though. Anyway, I'll watch your and subscribe. I enjoy guitar and your somewhat easy on the eyes. Love and Peace.
She mentioned early on that she played this song opening her coffee house sets, etc.. Mary has been through this song intimately both playing it and analyzing the lyrics. Great job. I will add that the bass and drums are doing some very unique backing. Mick hits a cymbal in a slightly odd beat from the get go. Recording and mix job are wonderful. But you know, "Silver Springs" captures the answer to "Go Your Own Way" ....or I've always thought so, and that's why it made a really great b-side of that single.
She hella good but once you've played a song enough ya can even play drunk while talking in a dimly lit or dark room. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything. 😉
One of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Musicians understand how incredible this performance is. The narration on top of perfect playing and pitch? Standing fucking ovation.
It is SO important that people know the story behind this iconic piece. As new generations are introduced, and older ones fade away it is covers like this that preserve the past in a way that keeps it meaningful for the future. THIS WAS EPIC - Thank you.
This is possibly the most mesmerizing tutorial I've ever watched. What a fantastic way to teach two chords that hold some of the biggest gravitas of melody and poetry. ❤
This is the first Mary Spender video I've watched, it magically landing in my feed while I'm sitting here ill with the flu, desperately wanting a mug of coffee I've yet to go to the kitchen to make. The video title intrigued me, then the opening notes captured me, soothing my symptoms and obliterating all thoughts of coffee for these 12 minutes. What a wonderful way to emphasize the simplicity of those two chords by playing them uninterrupted (well, except for that A minor) throughout the video, making the story of the song part of the song itself, another piece of magic right there. These peaceful and fascinating 12 minutes truly made me feel better and have given me not only the energy needed to type this, but also to go make that mug of coffee. Thank you so very much for this magical, melodic, medicinal video.
im not as new as you but Ive only been subscribed a couple of weeks. i was learning fast car by t chapman and a video m spender had done in relation to fast car being a perfect song was in my feed. i imagine youll enjoy that one too. its a fusion aswell and i was so impressed initially and captivated by M Spender herself that I came back for everything else. And, also, I had become jaded by fast car the song and was being forced to learn it on guitar to accompany a girl who could sing it beautifully. I was trying to talk her into doing For My Lover instead when the Spender vid dropped and performed the woo-woo on me. Gotta go. Enjoy it, whoever you are.
Even Arlo Guthrie would have to applaud this performance. Singing, telling the story, and playing simultaneously is the pinnacle of guitar music. It’s why many of us learned the guitar in the first place. It’s like juggling 10 balls. Few can do it.
Through all the muck on the internet, here shines the reason it should exist. Enriching the lives and deepening the souls of others. I am so glad this found me at this time on this day.
Your thoughtful and creative presentations of merging story telling with song are never lost on me, Mary. Such a brilliant way to pay homage to one of the most mesmerizing and emotionally impactful tunes of all time.
I have never seen a music analysis video achieve it's own level of impressive artistry. Seamlessly going from commentary to performance, while strumming the chords the whole time, uniquely impressive.
One uninterrupted take for 12 minutes of talking while playing, without a single verbal stumble. That's impressive. Every time I talk while playing, I end up more singing than talking. 😅
Wow, Mary Spender you are a story teller - I loved the delivery and analysis of Dreams. You carried the simplicity of the song through the complexities of Fleetwood Mac’s turbulent lives and brought a deeper understanding of the creative process; the sweat, the toil, the pain, the heart ache and the love, and encapsulated it all in the simplicity of the very song that gave life to it all. Huge respect for Fleetwood Mac especially Stevie Nicks, you and your story-telling. You really brought it to life! Fantastic video. Thank you 🙏😃👍👍👍
Crikey how can you play the guitar and sum up Fleetwood Mac all at the same time with Dreams thrown in ! Some people would read a Auto Que but your are simply winging this live ! Outstanding ! This is the future of music :) This is so Deep :)
Jeeze Mary! What an insightful, penetrating narrative - while not missing a beat with backdrop guitar! Not many could pull this off - especially in ONE take! You are unbelievable!! 👏🙏👍
That was an astounding display of mental prowess. I can't make up my mind which is more beautiful, your speaking voice or your singing voice. I'm always happy to hear either, because if you're singing, I get chills, and if you're speaking, I get to hear your carefully articulated thoughts. As a drummer, if I needed to speak to a bandmate during a song, I could only speak in rhythm with what I was playing (even though I can sing against the beat with no trouble--go figure), so seeing you extemporize while continuing to play and keep the beat impressed me deeply. Watching your right hand during all of this was enthralling for me. Thank you, Mary.
This is every bit as good as Beato’s song breakdowns. Even better, actually! As many times as I’ve listened to Mary’s voice, this is, maybe, the best iteration of her voice I’ve heard
The simplicity of the songs chords may be great, but like Stevie, it is your vocals that make it really special. How you managed to put this all together in one take is incredible. And you are so relaxed the whole time too. Have listened to/watched this 3 times already. So cool and smooth.
Rumours came out while I was still young but it rapidly hit the radio and has been a part of my life since its release. For me, though I *love* Dreams, this album is about “Never Going Back Again”. Still I love hearing you talk about it and sing parts
Mary, you continue to make the most unique videos on music TH-cam. I'm grateful for your creativity and talent. I can't imagine how many takes I would need to pull something half as good off.
That's why 'Why I only play fingerstyle guitar' is my favorite video of hers, but I didn't think she would actually do a take this clean for even longer
Being a singer and guitarist myself, I've always admired Mary's beautiful voice and guitar chops. I've covered this one in clubs countless times as well. Rock on Mary.
Mary, the way you put this video together, and performed it so effortlessly, speaks volumes to your artistry as both a musician and as a communicator. Thank you. 😊
This is fantastic! I don't usually like Dreams covers, because it is such a simple song the vocal in many ways is the song, and so much of Stevie is in it that it usually doesn't sound right. But you have this feel for it that makes it obvious that you have your own relationship to the song. It's still you singing it - and your voice is magical - but you also pull in that same ethereal softness combined with the desperate resilience that Stevie had to bring the song to life in the first place. I love hearing your thoughts about music, thank you for sharing the story this way, that was a brilliant performance.
A couple of people in here mentioned Arlo Guthrie in response to Mary's virtuoso speaking/singing performance. Suggest you go and find "Alice's Restaurant" if you haven't heard it. It's 50 years old and still 18 minutes of genius!!
The book suggests 10000 hours of practice makes perfect. Whilst that isnt quite true its clear you have played this so many times you can do it in your sleep. Blending the narrative and the lyrics is genius. Well done. You of all people should know its the journey not the ending. I hope you have love in your life
I’ve always thought that a big part of your magnetism is in the tone of your voice, which is supposed to be obvious in a singer, but quite unusual in every days life.. Whenever you decide to start a series of such a storytelling/singing with songs you like, I’ll be hearing that in a loop
Just bloody brilliant. The song alone is brilliant, Stevie's voice enhances it further. And nestled in the Rumours album it becomes the epitome of beauty. Current and future generations of musicians will listen to the original and be amazed. Mary Spender gets it. Thanks Mary.
I understand that they had a hard time getting a consistent time feel and actually physically looped a section of tape even wrapping around broom sticks or the like. Crazy.
I'm in tears here, just blown away by the way Mary brings this song from my youth to life in a way I'd never imagined. This classic never really captured me before, but now I am enraptured. I could listen to Mary sing this over and over and over again, sinking a little deeper every time (I can't wait to find a straight up performance of it by her). Her captivating story telling about the song's origins just adds another layer of heartfelt beauty and respect to this video, and to her brilliance as an artist and performer. I've followed you for years young lady, with the utmost respect, and must say that you have outdone yourself here. Thank you!
Before you even said it I was thinking "This is one take!". Awesome - like a Rick Beato video with a beautiful British accent. I could listen to you speak all day, I'd love to hear more 'analysis' from you.
I watched this video again after 3 months and I loved it possibly even more. It’s an amazing journey through many emotions. Mary, I think that this is one of your best musical performances ever available on TH-cam, with Sultans of Swing coming very close. But in this video you are also telling the story of the song so eloquently and reciting it on top of the music, alternating the story with the singing, and all so flawlessly while transmitting so many emotions. It’s incredible how you can feel it so deeply and intensely while maintaining control of it. Incredible job, Mary, this is really a masterpiece. Congrats!
Dear Mary, I still can't believe what I just saw and heard. This is an incredible, beautiful and profound tribute to maybe the most sensitive and gorgeous song of the past 50 years. Whenever I play this song, I start to dance, feel nostalgic and hopeful at the same time and realize that love is the best feeling in the world, worth taking chances on. Thank you Mary, a deep thank you. ⭐💜✌️
I love the long takes. Proof of talent. No cuts, relaxed, and smooth. Great one Mary! I still have my little 7 year old's crush on Stevie Nicks from 1977. She still has that ability to melt me with her voice. Her songwriting is so filled with imagery, something Lennon, and Harrison did a lot (she was seen "hanging out" with George in the later 70s a bit.
I’ve never seen your live show but you should structure your show like this video. You are a great storyteller and adding the song and continuous guitar is just perfect!
What an amazing video. Gotta appreciate the exceptional storytelling, amazing singing and also pulling off a 12 minute uncut take. Thank you for the lovely content!!
And in one take!?! Wow!!! Thanks Mary!! This is so great! You just asked the entire guitar community to step up their game. You gave a simple lesson, you gave a rich history, and a most beautiful performance. Top that!! ❤❤❤
Brilliant, Mary. As someone once said (more or less), a great song is one that can be stripped down to just one voice and one instrument and still retain all of its emotional impact. This format is the new "What Makes This Song Great." 🌹
Thanks for sharing this. while I've known the backstory for many years, your presentation took me back to the emotions of playing the vinyl album and relating to personal situations ❤
I just introduced my daughter to this song for the first time today, so the release of this video couldn’t be more fortuitous. Thank you, Mary, for your wonderful storytelling and artistry
WOW! Playing, singing, narration, and then running through and giving full respect to your sponsor in one bloody take. Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing.
This is brilliant, beautiful, and captivating! To be able to sing and play a well known song, then tell the story about the history of it at the same time is truly remarkable. Please keep content like this coming.
Thanks Mary. I had the original on vinyl when it was new. Never really got the lyrics until your sensitive and respectful rendition on this video. From air head 18 year old to a gently weeping 65 year old, I not only "get it", I have lived it. More than once. Thankyou once again for a most deep cathartic experience.
Great timely Mary...I'm currently writing a song about a long ago and far away breakup...this song is a reminder we'll get along with our lives but getting past the heartbreak takes time. BTW...a fun song to jam a lead over!! Mahalo Mary!
John McVie's bass playing doesn't get enough credit....His simple bass lines in this song are brilliant, the bridge fills are so simple, airy and tasty....just what the song needed!.....Playing along with this song always gives me goose bumps, Stevie's voice and lyrics are so haunting!
I love this..now I'm on it , With just turning down a right reverse shoulder replacement And left thumb failed operation a couple yrs ago, but My guitar makes me sing, And write songs of memories Past ,of everything, The acoustic speaks to me , As I play tenderly slow, Lost loves of yrs gone by , But my guitar is my soulmate ,now in time ,will Be, the only thing left, My strings, always ,PLAYED, MY heart strings, Best.❤❤❤❤ Thank you for this. STAY FOCUSED STAY POSITIVE & NEVER GIVE UP 😊...
I'm very glad I didn't miss your class today Mary! If the music thing doesn't work out you could smash your YT Channel by dissecting Song origins as you did with Dreams! I shall see you forever now whenever I hear this tune! Cheers from Across The Pond In COW-lumbus, Ohio MOO 👋
Wow. Top notch storytelling, with the chops to back up an iconic song. Always impressed by you Mary, but this is next level. Songwriters tell stories through song; you just told a beautiful story using song as a backup. Please don’t stop.
What a refreshing technique for presenting a piece of music history. Flawless execution of the transitions between singing and narration...pure talent!
9:32 Mary: " but that doesn't stop us despite the knowledge of future pain." Me: ... In all seriousness, absolutely loved the history mixed with the song!
I'm speechless. Not because I don't have any thoughts, but because I don't know how to express them. "Keep my visions to myself", indeed. As always, thank you Mary Spender. "Rumours" was a fantastic album from a great group of musicians in a golden era of popular music. In a painful, tumultuous part of their lives. It still hurts to hear it this 46 years later. I still listen. All is as it should be.
Your music and storytelling is powerful magic. I couldn’t stop myself from crying at the beauty of your telling of the love I lost. ThkQ for helping bring understanding and closure to my broken heart❤
You will notice that several of the drum fills land one two instead of the common one. It creates a feel of a hiccough or even a little polyrhythm, but it’s is a seemingly simple land one beat later than expected. Your historical delivery while playing this song is sublime.

Absolutely fabulous video!
Mary, What an incredible interpretation!! Beautiful story. Thank you!
::)
its like time travel with a story, never knew the back story. Love their music, and as Paul Harvey says, "Now you know the rest of the story." :)
This format is next level. Not a single falter, stutter or hesitation. I have no idea how you pulled this off, Mary, but it's incredible.
Did she memorize the script?? Is there a teleprompter? Not a single "um" or anything. INSANELY IMPRESSIVE!!
She's just... Pro.. . Amazing!!

Singing while playing guitar is one thing, not stopping playing guitar to tell the story? that's a superpower.
Absolutely!
Very lovely, but it's only 2 chords! 😂
Mary has classes for such efforts.
She hella good but once you've played a song enough ya can even play drunk while talking in a dimly lit or dark room.
Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything. 😉
Do you play? It's easy as walking and chewing gum at the same time to talk and play at the same time. Far easier than singing.
One of the most impressive things I've ever seen. Musicians understand how incredible this performance is. The narration on top of perfect playing and pitch? Standing fucking ovation.
What a wonderful way to spend 12 minutes. Thank you, Mary.
This is pro musician being a pro musician...songs are more than the notes , they are a story and a journey ....god bless you Mary ...
Definitely! I would go so far as to add, a feeling. If you can make someone else FEEL something in your songs, you have succeeded.

You summed it up!
Wow, that was awesome. Documentary, performance art, wrapped up in a live, single take. Applauso!
CAPTIVATING. I've never had someone singing tell me a story and hold my attention for this long. Beautifully done. Stunnin
A couple of people in here mentioned Arlo Guthrie in response to Mary's virtuoso speaking/singing performance. Suggest you go and find "Alice's Restaurant" if you haven't heard it. It's 50 years old and still 18 minutes of genius!!
this song is attached to my soul as a child. it’s like beyond a song to me it’s an energy
The book suggests 10000 hours of practice makes perfect. Whilst that isnt quite true its clear you have played this so many times you can do it in your sleep. Blending the narrative and the lyrics is genius. Well done. You of all people should know its the journey not the ending. I hope you have love in your life
I keep returning to this song and enjoying it over and over
I’ve always thought that a big part of your magnetism is in the tone of your voice, which is supposed to be obvious in a singer, but quite unusual in every days life..
Mick did some _fabulous_ drumming on this track
I understand that they had a hard time getting a consistent time feel and actually physically looped a section of tape even wrapping around broom sticks or the like. Crazy.
I'm in tears here, just blown away by the way Mary brings this song from my youth to life in a way I'd never imagined. This classic never really captured me before, but now I am enraptured. Absolutely spellbinding discourse and performance. The most engaging thing I've seen in a long time. Thanks so much.
Before you even said it I was thinking "This is one take!". Awesome - like a Rick Beato video with a beautiful British accent. I could listen to you speak all day, I'd love to hear more 'analysis' from you.
No bullshit, this is one of the best videos I've ever watched.
me too,me too,it's not a only "how to play", it's interesting storytelling!
Mary's sultry voice blends so well with this song! The story, the singing and all in one take, Fantastic!!
One of, if not THE best, analog albums EVER.
I watched this video again after 3 months and I loved it possibly even more. It’s an amazing journey through many emotions.
Mary, I think that this is one of your best musical performances ever available on TH-cam, with Sultans of Swing coming very close. Incredible job, Mary, this is really a masterpiece. Congrats!
I enjoyed this format. Please do another.
That is, BY FAR, the best cover I’ve ever seen for this song, and one I’ve grown up with. Well - and creatively so - done
One take?!!! Holy professionalism! Absolutely splendid.
⭐💜✌️
Best story teller ever, Mary Spender !
Your sensibilty matches your talent, well done, what a nice moment you are giving us all ! Thank you.

To have beautiful young woman sing and tell you stories like this is magical. Absolutely beautiful voice…
This was a masterpiece, loved the story being told while playing the song. Next level Mary! 👏
I just introduced my daughter to this song for the first time today, so the release of this video couldn’t be more fortuitous. Thank you, Mary, for your wonderful storytelling and artistry
Yes, you are amazing!!... you are such an expressive singer... and easy listening ....
WOW! Playing, singing, narration, and then running through and giving full respect to your sponsor in one bloody take. Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Even though I know the song and the story very well, I was awestruck by this beautiful and sensitive way of presenting it. Thank you so much Mary. 😊
This is brilliant, beautiful, and captivating! To be able to sing and play a well known song, then tell the story about the history of it at the same time is truly remarkable. Please keep content like this coming.
Wow - just stumbled upon you in my feed. This is an amazing one-take video. Beautiful - thank you!
Thanks Mary. I had the original on vinyl when it was new. Never really got the lyrics until your sensitive and respectful rendition on this video.

That was jaw-dropping. That was spectacular.
Wonderful essay. Poetic and precise. Thank you.
My favourite TH-cam video this year.
Amazing! Such a beautiful way to pay tribute to one of the most iconic songs of all time. Thanks so lot🎈
John McVie's bass playing doesn't get enough credit....His simple bass lines in this song are brilliant, the bridge fills are so simple, airy and tasty....just what the song needed!.....Playing along with this song always gives me goose bumps, Stevie's voice and lyrics are so haunting!
Yes!
I love this..now I'm on it ,
With just turning down a right reverse shoulder replacement
And left thumb failed operation a couple yrs ago,
but
My guitar makes me sing,
And write songs of memories
Past ,of everything,
The acoustic speaks to me ,
As I play tenderly slow,
Lost loves of yrs gone by ,
But my guitar is my soulmate ,now
in time ,will
Be, the only thing left,
My strings, always ,PLAYED,
MY heart strings, Best.❤❤❤❤
Thank you for this.
STAY FOCUSED STAY POSITIVE & NEVER GIVE UP
😊...
Beautiful - this had everything in it. I love the story behind the story with the play the singing and the lyrics.
Really loved this, thank you.
Wow. Top notch storytelling, with the chops to back up an iconic song. Always impressed by you Mary, but this is next level. Songwriters tell stories through song; you just told a beautiful story using song as a backup. Please don’t stop.
Thank you Mary!
What a refreshing technique for presenting a piece of music history. Flawless execution of the transitions between singing and narration...pure talent!
Your vocals really shine with this song! Very impressive how you interweave the history lesson and song snippets together! Excellent! 👏👏👏
It's a two chord rondo. It's also "horse with no name" backwards.
Mind blown 🤯!
yeah I thought that after maybe five seconds
Do you mean "A Name With No Horse"?
The entire monologue was poetry. Beautifully done.

Mary: " but that doesn't stop us despite the knowledge of future pain."
Me: ...
In all seriousness, absolutely loved the history mixed with the song!
Just wow. Incredible voice and talent.
Brilliant! Just brilliant!
This is very good format
Your music and storytelling is powerful magic. I couldn’t stop myself from crying at the beauty of your telling of the love I lost. ThkQ for helping bring understanding and closure to my broken heart❤
Beautiful tone and clear recording. Perfect. And 1 take? Wow
You will notice that several of the drum fills land one two instead of the common one. It creates a feel of a hiccough or even a little polyrhythm, but it’s is a seemingly simple land one beat later than expected.
Your historical delivery while playing this song is sublime.
Great timeless song and lovely commentary. Well done Mary.
That was so absolutely beautiful. Even your narration dounds like poetry. I am also a musician but i am now an instant fan of you Mary, magic stuff.
Nice Taste! Beautiful Voice and comfortable guitar tempo.
Made me tear up honestly. You explaining the art of this song was an incredible piece of art in itself. Thank you for sharing this
I said it once before, you talking and singing is really awesome!!!
Now i love this song even more. Thank you
Brilliant as always. Luscious vocal and guitar as always.
I enjoy playing this on the Fender Rhodes, just vamping back and forth. It never gets old.
Wow ! 🎸 Miss Spender sounds fantastic! 😎
Captivating story, singing, playing, in perfect proportion, all in ONE TAKE! Wow! Just wow! 😳 👏👏👏
