The story of what Prince did to other musicians and songwriters is too long and nasty to go into - yet I do clearly remember having a dream about the world ending, the sky turning colors and everybody running around screaming. I went down to our basement and with my brother on drums and wrote the song 1999.
I know the name of the drug dealin' criminal that brought the tape to PRN, in Edina MN, where we lived. Nothing we can do now, but - much more to this story and what was done to me {made a "homeless person" for 10 years} AND to HIM in the 'aftermath'. So...
...would you consider running for president of the USA?
You could not win or serve but we need a large dose of your kind of class over here, desperatly!

Exactly how I feel. I’ve posted over 400 crappy covers of songs that I love and haven’t ever expected to make a penny from this. I do it because it’s fun. Or at least, it was. A month ago, I got my first copyright strike (for “Boys of Summer”) and I haven’t really wanted to post anymore. I don’t know why it matters if no money is being made one way or another.

@@travisthornton1792 You should've known better than to try and cover a Don Henley song bros.- dude is well known to be the least tolerant about allowing any covers of any of his material- he's even gone before congress trying to persuade them to make it a criminal act. Covering anything he's performed on is really asking for it man. But who cares dude- you get a few more strikes before you're out- just don't cover anymore of Don's stuff and you're good. If I were you- I would cover something you find fun and not worry at all about whether it gets views or anything- remember why you started doing it in the first place- because it was fun to you. If it's truly not anymore- I wouldn't do it- it's a ton of work. Good luck to you bros. I'll check out your stuff- I'm curious now.

Unfortunately, I did a cover of Lyin Eyes back in April of 2020. It was agreed that there would be revenue sharing, but it would be viewed in limited countries. Everything was fine till February of 2024 when I got a copyright strike and they took down the video. Universal was who sent me the email. I repealed the strike, to no reply. They claimed my version matched the original for over 3 minutes and claimed I used their backing track. I responded by saying "Thank you for thinking my version was the original. That was quite a compliment". My version of Sultans is going strong and make a little on it in the revenue sharing. Thank you Dire Straits

As you did in this one you share your personal experience, which most others wouldn't, but i find the most useful and informative.
I love your covers. Far and away my favorite is basket case - i prefer it to green days original. Scott's guitar is spot on, but what is amazing is that we get to see a very different side of you. You connect to the viewer in a way that is so direct and fun and allive and personal. When I need a lift, it is my goto video - it is guaranteed to make me smile. One more thing - i think you should do a new version of Bobby long dead and done. I've posted many covers throughout my youth, and I've found that as long as I include a note in the description stating that the artist, it's label, and all affiliates have the right to the music, then I'm fine! I've seen other people cover the same song, and their videos were removed. Perhaps I'm lucky? But I doubt that. My biggest cover is Invincible by Muse, everyone loved that one for some reason, and TH-cam REALLY let that one go around!

Honestly no. I admire her musical talents and skills, but don't care for her singing voice. She has a naturally deeper voice that is smooth and melodic when she speaks, but when she sings, she uses falsetto and her natural voice disappears somewhere. So if I had to choose, I prefer narration and video essays over her singing. With that said, I think she's a very talented artist and lots of people like her singing, as they should.

As to royalties paid to the songwriter for live performances usually the promoter or venue pays ASCAP/BMI/SESAC a fee per event or song for the performing artist's use of the songwriter's material. This would include an artist's cover of material. ASCAP.BMI/SESAC then pays the songwriter for each use of their original material What arrangement TH-cam, as the technical "venue" has with ASCAP/ BMI/ SESAC I have no idea.

It used to be (and I don't know if it is still true) that if you sing any song even your own during a live show you are supposed to submit the list to whichever body controls compensating the artist for the use of the song. I remember reading an interesting interview with Keith Jagger where the Stones realised they were being ripped off by the process each time they played gigs (along with being ripped off by merchandisers) and took the whole process in house in effect paying themselves to play their own songs rather than a third party collecting the revenue on their behalf and deducting a fee for doing so. All of this is iirc. Funny old world the music biz,

You probably got the strike because of the altered lyrics. The automatic mechanical license rule doesn't apply if you alter the words or melody significantly. In that case, it's considered a "derivative work," not a performance of the original song, and you have to get direct permission from the copyright holder. (Though I don't know if TH-cam has negotiated some kind of special treatment for such cases.) -Tom

Thanks for another clear informative post! Bravo!!! "Take It Easy" was written by Jackson Browne and covered by the Eagles, tho Glenn Frey did help w the lyrics.

Your experience mirrors my own in many ways. For example: I also had a Prince cover removed around that same time. However, I haven't joined the TH-cam partner program, and maybe I should. Didn't think I could make any money on the covers. Could be a game changer. Thanks!

What an incredible voice. Even just listening to her talk. She should be in radio, or doing voiceovers, or an announcer, or even TV or movies. She needs an agent.

Good information, thank you! I am working on a cover for which I also created notation, as far as I know, it doesn’t exist anywhere and I believe I would need a print license. I was trying to locate the copyright owner, but no luck. I guess I’ll find out who it is once my cover is on TH-cam.

I love the sound of your voice, your range, the resonance in the lower registers, your facility in jumping across octaves.
I was once in a band where the singer would talk endlessly on the mic. Finally, one day, our drummer yelled out, “Shut up and sing!” Okay, it’s not that bad with you, but like I said, I’m here for your extraordinary singing and songwriting.
    You’re just terrific, really.

I really appreciate your taking the time to deal with these issues as some have recently had effect on my nascent career as a solo guitar vocal performer. I was recently asked to submit two song videos by a local venue I was hoping to secure my first gig at. The hope was that I could video that gig and have something I could present online in hopes of securing further gigs. The two songs I chose were a couple of favourites, Ozark Mountain Daredevils “You Made It Right” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “Did She Mention My Name”. I uploaded to TH-cam and sent them by email. Days after doing so I checked back and found that the latter song had been dropped from the platform and at this point I don’t know if it even reached its intended recipient. I’m assuming now that it got dropped because I uploaded with no mention of who the original writer was. Obviously acknowledging the original writer (instead of assuming everyone KNOWS Gordon Lightfoot) would have increased the likelihood of that song staying up but is there more I could do to guarantee staying up on TH-cam? A big part of my plan for TH-cam and/or instagram promo going forward is to showcase my repertoire of cover versions. Please advise. PS I realize there is a lot I don’t know about TH-cam, and social media in general. I’m launching this career at 65 because I’ve always wanted to and there is nothing holding me back. I anticipate finding “TH-cam for Dummies” or equivalent as a means of getting where I need to be. Make sense?

7:44 That was an aha moment. Cuz in January I started a new channel and covers Bryan Adam’s Everything I do and Eagles Hotel California but few weeks later I got copyright strikes and felt so bad about it eventho my versions were different.
I thought maybe it’s because of universal music group but now I know what was the reason behind 😅

Great info Mary. I typically utilize Fair Use for my music videos, since they are a training video showing how to play the song. However, my last one got the "SHARING" penalty. I have no idea if it will earn any money or not, but it got WAY more views the first two days than any of my other videos. I don't understand what caused that either. I'd love any info you can share on that aspect. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the advice and insight. I have been debating whether or not I should do covers to bring traffic to my channel. I did one so far, Billie Eilish "I love you". Thank you once again. Your videos always help me on my quest. Also your covers and originals are awesome.

Thank you Mary, always so informative. I have done a heap of covers, around half have copyright claims, but I'm yet to get an actual strike. After reading a few comments here, I thought I'd share the second line which can be clearly read in each description of my videos is "All rights remain reserved by the respective owners."
