    Venice left a strong influence in southern Greece and Greek islands:
    1) 890 words. Greek language has 2.500-3000 Italian words (the most words coming from a foreign language), 890 of them being venetian
    2) great influence in architecture. If you ever visit nafplio, monemvasia, preveza, Chania mesolonghi, corfu etc you will see what i am talking about
    3) cuisine: Greece is the only country second to Italy with a heavy native pasta tradition, meanwhile Greece has the second heaviest pasta consumption in the world after Italy itself. If course that is not visible in touristic areas and thats because people associate pasta with Italy only, so Greece never promoted its traditional pasta.
    4) music: major influences can be found in the ionian islands, but minor also in Crete and aegean music, as well as in western Peloponnese

    The funny part to me is that it's technically one of the longest running republics to ever exist (although it's legitimacy as a true representation of the people is debatable, to say the least). To say that a nation existed as an independent political unit outside of major imperial capital regions for a thousand years is something truly of note.

      @@Drobexxx Keep in mind that the founding fathers of America never intended for everyone to be able to vote. In their idea of democracy only a few would be allowed to vote and those few were of course wealthy and educated. The idea that everyone would be allowed to vote would be considered total insanity for them. Even in Athens where democracy came to be it wasn't like that. You had to complete military training to be able to vote in Ancient Athens, later this kind of training would also include philosophical and literary studies and only the wealthy would take it. Democracy like it is today would be seen as a joke and no one would dare to propose it and if someone did people would probably think the person had some kind of mental illness.

    Venice alone was so strong that managed to stand up to the armies of the strongest monarchies in Europe (even including the empire) and to come out head-on to then rival the Ottomans themselves in the domain of the sea for over 2 centuries. Imagine an Italy united by Venice in XV century like France, Spain, Portugal and England: no one would ever think of facing this superpower. This Italy would have the triple of the resources of Spanish, French and Imperial all put together and it would have put the Ottomans in serious difficulties in dominating the Mediterranean. It would have been the strongest state of Europe !!!

    • @Tetex
      @Tetex 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Venetians didn't see themselves as Italians. Also many of the powerful families of Venice saw the territories of the Terraferma (mainland) with distrust, they thought that Venice should be geared towards the sea and those territories were only putting the Republic at risk without bringing enough benefits to justify holding them. Uniting Italy was never a goal because before nationalism there really wasn't an Italian identity, especially in Venice that didn't see themselves as part of Italy just as the British sometimes don't see themselves as part of Europe even though technically they are in Europe (have you ever seen a British saying he is going to spend his vacation in Europe as if Britain is not Europe, just like that). Btw, the Venetian language is not a dialect of Italian, it is considered a separate language.

    I am proud that my roots are in this deep culture, I am ashamed to see britons, uncultured, racist, ignorant comments... This Republic had the dominion on the Adriatic sea ans on the eastern Mediterranean sea for about 7centuries... And you don't understand this,.. Your influence on Greece, Cyprus, your ship cruises to Israel, are traced and stabilized by this Republic.. Arabic people call Adriatic sea, the venetian gulf, byndikiratt,.... All our history d be totally different without the Serenissima... An example of really democracy and tolerance, lingua franca.. U know what I mean? Well, venetian was lingua franca from Venice, to all eastern coast of Adriatic sea, actual, ehm slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, even Albania, to Greek Islands of Zante, zakintos, creta, kriti, Cyprus and to holy Jerusalem.... Actual languages preserves words, grammatical expression of venetian, dishes are so, buzara, kaperi, briziola.. Ask local people even today.... And Othello, was colored, he was a, leader of venetian ship powerfull flotilla, yes d
    they didn't look at your origin and race, but about your attitude,... Culture of Serenissima is still alive and preserved, particularly in Istria and Dalmatia, for centuries under venetian control... About Dubrovnik, Ragusa, yes it was indipendent, but culture, language, trade, life was under the power and illuminate leadership of its mother, Venice..... Slavian, I am among these, preserved this culture, even is history, napoleon, Austria, Yugoslavia, destroyed all possible Lyons of Saint Marco...
    Look at this from koper, to all Istria and Dalmatia far from Greece, trough Albania and Montenegro.... In every city on the Sea 🌊 you look at, you ll see fortifications remained and, when not totally destroyed, there is Saint Marco Lyon with a book, opened while peace period, closed when war troubles occurred. For the teachers that see all this only a sea tale, remember that Venezia conquered territory far up to Milan perifer area,... Southern to actual central Italy.. And, please Marco Polo , was venetian, first real, deep approach to Chinese culture, was his life..... Now tell me about Luxembourg or Kosovo... By the way striga is one of the words autoctone in this land... I heard and smile about this, good culture to everyone ❤️🤗👍

    In 1038 Saint Stephen of Hungary died. His sister was the wife of the Doge of Venice, and Stephen named her son Peter Orseolo as his heir (since his own sons had died before him). Therefore the second king of Hungary was actually half Venetian. Peter had a hard time reigning, he was probably killed in 1046. He was buried in the cathedral of Pécs, however the location of his grave is unknown.

    Why Venice had such strange territory and borders

    • @garn3590
      @garn3590 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Because they did like the Portoguese, wanting to expand commerce and not having enough manpower to take a lot of land they sniped important commercial nodes. They tried to expand more organically both in Italy and balkans-greece but where stopped by bigger states or coalitions, they where monsters at sea, not at land

    It's interesting to see that you write : Republica de Venesia, that's not Italian but Venetian language, our language that is very different from Italian.
    But it's of course not recognized as a language from the Italian state and from the EU, they said that Venetian is an Italian dialect but how can a 1000 years old tongue be the dialect of Italian (a language that is 200 years old)? So Venetian is not teached in the schools, even the history of the Republic of Venice is not teached in schools.
    Nowadays most people here in Veneto don't know anything about our history and our language due to the Italianization process that has begun during the Kingdom of Italy, the fascist regime and now with the Italian "Republic".
    But nowadays lots of Venetian still stand for our indipendence, defending our history our mother tongue and our culture (that's completely different from "Italian culture" that actually doesn't exist)
    from the Italian oppressor.
    Viva ła Repùblica de Venexia, par tera e par mar SAN MARCO! 🦁🗡️
