      Vedat Işıktaş funny thing is, Alfred the greats family line is what kept the Danes/Norsemen out of Wessex. Alfreds son Edward the elder was successful to reunite England as a whole. Edwards sons Eadred and Aethelstan also proved to be worthy. Eadred drove the last Viking king of York, Eric Bloodaxe. York was occupied by Vikings for a while, but thanks to Alfreds family line, he saved England.

    Deira: I’m you, but stronger

    • @DemonofChaos264
      @DemonofChaos264 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After Aedilric died, Bernicia under Aethelfrith took Deira and combined the two into 1. Aethelfrith died in combat. Edwin, who was the youngest son of Aedilrics brother took over. Edwin died fighting Mercia and Edwin's cousin Osric became King of the combined Kingdoms.
      Edwin died fighting Gywnedd. Edwins brother Osric then became King and also died fighting Gywnedd. Oswald (son of Aethelfrith) came back and united all of the clans of Bernicia and Deira and then captured a lot of land before getting killed by the King of Mercia.
      Oswine (son of Oswald) was elected King of Deira and Oswiu (son of Aethelfrith) was king of Bernicia. Oswiu attacked Deira and Oswine refused to fight and went to hide instead. He was turned in by his own men and executed. After that Oswiu killed the King of Mercia and controlled them for a few years. He also subdued the kingdoms to the north of him and was honorary 'Overlord' of Saxon Britain.

      Æthelfrith of Bernicia managed to gain control of Deira and exiled one of Deira’s young princes, Edwin.
      King Rædwald of East Anglia protected Edwin and fought alongside him against Æthelfrith at the Battle of the River Idle and Æthelfrith fell to the sword. Edwin then swooped back up north and took control of both Deira and Bernicia, solidifying what would later become the Kingdom of Northumbria. Edwin was actually pagan but converted to Christianity towards the end of his life.

      but they're not just english toffs,, you have a say in who leads you, Scotland takes part in the elections, thats kinda the point of the union. I agree it could be a bit more balanced, but the solution is not to break off the union. The union was made over thousands of years of political evolution on the island, saying "phhft, they're all a bunch of english toffs" is close-minded and frankly foolish. Independent England, Scotland etc will only lead to the island as a whole becoming irrelevant, the Union is the only chance the British people (not just england) have at influencing world politics. I understand the will for independance, but Scotland is already very autonomous.

      Chris Klitou I regard Britain as united 1603-49 because of that, one ruler and not continuous parliaments. 1649 Scotland moved its own way but 1651 Cromwell reconquered it, and united again under the restored monarchy. I regard Scotland as indy again 1688-1707, when continuous parliaments got going and had nominal consent over which king to accept, and in tbat period it was ruled by a parliamentary cabinet of aristos on the king's behalf. This explains why there were 2 unions.
      Why don't you show the Tweed border from 1018? What is the late Middle Ages stuff about "Chester (Eng)" and the Welsh marches shown in lighter red than England?

It made me wonder how many people fell to the sword, or the arrow, or the boiling tar just to enable these many hundreds of boundaries to exist at all, however fleeting. So much seemed to be happening, I kept trying to freeze the clip and rewind whenever a huge flash of colour appeared for a brief microsecond before it was gone again! I think I might have enjoyed a slower version of the clip a lot more. It would give my slow brain time to absorb the information better, because I love ancient British history. A tribe becomes agricultural/pastoralist semi-nomads (Neolithic Revolution), they eventually evolve into city settlements with advanced concepts, animal domestication, tool making, trading, techniques, architecture, warfare and ideologies. Then another tribe conquers them, absorbs their cultural achievements, unify themselves from several city states, creates a maritime or land-based empire, and then the process is repeated.

      I guess the troubles with Ireland go all the way back to when Irish Slave Traders regularly abducted people from the landmass we now call Great Britain.... And the Irish were perfectly happy to jump on boats and dominate other people such as the Picts. I just see it as population movement and illustrates perfectly well that the idea of 'the Irish' being a distinctly separate people from those on the landmass of 'mainland' Britain is a fallacy. And given that the Scots came from Ulster and have strong connections with that area throughout history just indicates how crass and ill thought the idea that just because Ulster is in Ireland that therefore it should be part of Eire - when put to the vote the people of Ulster voted to stay British... therefore drop the issue and move on to creating better British Irish relationahips instead of digging up old bitterness inspiring half truths...

      Allan Thomson and then it was a Norse slaving centre and then the Norman's invaded England and then Wales and decided they wanted an empire which included both islands and Corsica and Sardinia and then the French kings of England wanted that same empire - 590ce to 1066ce the English didn't look at conquering anyone, they even built a wall to keep the Welsh out. It was the Norse then the French Kings, then the German and Dutch kings that have used England as a base to invade Ireland Wales and Scotland.

      I know for a fact that Romans were pretty good in Gauls. First they originally "invaded to help celtics clans who lived there and were allied to them. Of course it was to the detriment of the neighbouring clans they were fighting, but celtic clans never got along for too long, so there would have been conflict either way. It was fine back then because the conflict were staightforward and not nearly as bloody as modern ones. When you fight so much yo have got to agree to some limitations if you don't want everyone to get whipped out.
      Then the Gauls were inferiors, and then second rate citizens for some time, but eventually some became roman councils and politicians. Besides the Roman integrated the gaulish gods (they shought equivalent in the Roman pantheon and gods of the two people were often represented together in Gaul), and some romans stationed in Gaul addopted roman gods like Epona. So no religious purge or anything.
      And Roman technics in architecture and politic organisation, not to mention the commerce and combat tactics, were very beneficial to the Gallo-Roman.
      Then after the fall of the western roman empire, feudalism granted the pesant some security and prevented them to be killed or plundered every two days by passing "barbarians".
      Then the unification of the state and the strenghtening of the royal power quelled local conflict between nobles. As did the Crusades (in European territory I mean), which began to help the christians orthodox in Constantinople, when they had to face invasions from the muslims.
      Then the creation on a republic lowered the gap between the rich (who were all nobles) and the poors (peasants) and guaranteed the same rights for all.
      Of course there were abuses, corruption and hatred every step of the way, but nowaday it is hype to be pessimistic and hateful toward humankind, and it pisses me off. The same thing is happening every time people talk of the EU, and most of these guys don't even know what the ECSC was...
      That's why history is important, and why it need to be objective and show the abuse and the good deeds and intentions whenever there were any.

      Don't confuse unity for civilization, Ireland during this time period was the center of academia in western Europe. It was one of the few places the Romans had not conquered and when Rome fell it was the only place that was safe and literate enough for scholars and monks to flee to. Irish monasteries replicated literature that would have otherwise been lost to time. They had a very advanced civilization despite their division. Literacy and knowledge flowed from Ireland and helped bring Europe back out of the dark ages.

    • @DeclinedMercy
      @DeclinedMercy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Finn Spooner No, they didn't. They established a single outpost at Drumanagh. The unique Gaelic legal system would not have survived centuries of Roman occupation.

    • @DeclinedMercy
      @DeclinedMercy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Finn Spooner no, there is actually no evidence whatsoever of a Roman invasion of Ireland. There is evidence of trade between Ireland and Roman Britannia and there is evidence of a single Roman outpost just north of what would become Dublin, there is no written evidence of the Roman conquest because it didn't happen and also the lack of written evidence is pretty good evidence in itself that it did not happen. The Romans were a warrior culture and there would certainly be records not just of the military campaign but also of the governance and occupation of Ireland.
      Another fact that works against the hypothesis of a Roman conquest is that Ireland lacked large cities due in large part to the unique legal, cultural and political structure of Ireland. Most of the population of Ireland was rural and post-Christianity most political and economic activity in Ireland was centered around monestaries because there were few notable cities that early, even Dublin would not be founded until centuries later when the Vikings arrived.
      The Romans would have set up shop somewhere and they would have needed a city to govern from, even if they created it themselves and there would certainly be evidence of that whether the city began as an Irish settlement conquered by Rome or Roman occupation led to the creation of a new city.
      So stop saying there is evidence of a Roman conquest of Ireland, there is literally zero evidence to suggest that and it clashes with major known facts about ancient Ireland.

    • @DeclinedMercy
      @DeclinedMercy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Finn Spooner I don't think anyone ever claimed they didn't reach it. They conquered the island right next to it and held it for centuries, it's not a huge leap of logic to think maybe they sent people to check out the neighborhood.

    This is a great video! I wondering if after 1998, Scotland should be a lighter shade of red, and 1999 so should Wales, since they got devolved Parliaments then. I'm not sure when or how you would colour Northern Ireland differently, since their devolution history is a bit more complicated...
