The Spartans were also known for their witticism. When a Spartan king was being pestered by someone who wanted to know who the most exemplary Spartan was the king said "He who is least like you.". Their witticism was known to be short, dry and blunt and has become known as the 'laconic phrase'.
actually here in greece, laconic phrase and laconic way of speaking mainly describes something that is being told with as few words as possible/ saying just the absolutely necessary.
That’s what he said short dry blunt the quote is basically saying wsomthubf witty with as few words as possible
If they put these videos in school for history , I'd be interested

Interesting fact. Only Spartan soldiers who died in combat and women who died in childbirth were allowed to be buried with a gravestone.
Yes it was told in an another infographic video .
Greeks burnt their dead. They did not bury them
@@ayushpurohit8266 the Spartans were not like the Athenians. The Spartans buried their dead.
Greeks did both. In athens , bodies were cremated.
Actually this a myth. There are A LOT of myths regarding Sparta and the culture of Spartans in fact. Funeral rites were very important in ancient Greek societies, and the Spartans were VERY pious, VERY superstitious, so such an idea doesn't make sense. Also Spartan women had A LOT of freedoms compared to other Greek city-states of the time. ESPECIALLY compared to Athens which HATED women. (though by no means a feminist utopia, but honestly if you're a girl and had to live in Ancient Greece, Sparta would actually be a better option)
Anyway, I digress. Point is, there's so much about Sparta that's actually common misconception. It certainly doesn't help that really all our sources on Spartan culture comes from NON-SPARTAN sources which is very important to understand. Though if you wanna read up on Sparta and its history, I'd recommend the book "The Spartans: The world of Warrior-Heroes of Ancient Greece" by Prof. Paul Cartledge.

Fun fact about the shields.
The Spartans were punished if at any moment they placed their shield on the ground with its inner side (the "dome" where the straps are) facing down.
The shield was the most important part of their equipment - even more important than the spear- and it was larger, thicker and heavier than your "standard" shield at the time.
So, if the shield was placed on the ground with its inner side down and the soldier needed to quickly pick it up due to an emergency, he would have to turn it over first, wasting precious seconds for himself and most importantly for the phalanx.
That's why whenever they had to place their shield on the ground, it was always inner side up.

How was their typical sparing? Fist and Kick Fights?
Their sparring had a few things which are to be born in mind. On one hand they certainly did practice weapons combat, but we know little/nothing about those details. As far as unarmed combat goes, the Spartans were extraordinary, with other city states trying to make it illegal for Spartans to compete in such events as boxing, wrestling, and Pankration during the Olympics. Boxing is pretty straightforward, though I believe the rules only deemed eye gouging and attacking your opponent's groin illegal, thus kicking may have been incorporated. Wrestling was two separate events; one from standing where the athlete who performed three takedowns/throws first was the champion, and the other where it started on the ground and athletes would attempt to submit each other. In both events, again, eye gouging and groin shots were illegal. Pankration was a mix of wrestling and boxing, supposedly ment to be the most violent sport of the three, and bearing semblance to Mixed Martial Arts, thus supporting the idea kicks may have been allowed, but that's just my personal theory. Same rules, though the Spartans trained without the restrictions as well to prepare for combat. It is logical to assume they would have done more training with weapons than not, but these above sports are basically ancient Boxing/kickboxing, Judo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and MMA, so if you want to know how they fought, these are probably the best places to look given the lack of historical texts on combat techniques. Hope this answered your question!
