As a nation Sparta was feared for it's soldiers, and respected for its way of life. In modern say, the Spartans are still held in high regard, and the Spartan helmet and shield still used as a symbol to reflect their values almost 2000 years later.
These quotes help to explain the Spartan philosophy and the mindset of Sparta, a mindset that helps us remain calm, collected and resilient in the face of hardship, adversity, and events that threaten to invade our peace of mind.

it probably has to do with morale, you have to create a really specific kind of society and push very specific values to make war-ing constantly like actually be feasable, like if they hadnt built their entire culture around it, if kids werent instilled with these ideas of honor glory valor courage comradery and on and on then their society wouldve died much quicker, their whole society was tough, the idea that your MOM of all people would tell you something like "Come back with your shield or come back on it", its basically a threat, because if you come back alive without your shield, for one you will never be seen with respect again, youre no longer a spartan and your mother will most likely disown you, its brutal.

“As a Spartan, return with your shield, or on it, But never without it.”
To return with your shield was to be victorious in life. To return on your shield was to be victorious in death. But to return without your shield meant you lost the battle but were still alive. This was often assumed to mean that they were cowards who lost their shields and fled from combat to save their own lives. Such men are not worthy to call themselves Spartans and will never be considered or respected as such again. And so to the woman of Sparta, they have lost their sons as no true son of Sparta would return without their shield from a victorious battlefield.

I've been contemplating for some years now about why these 'ancient warrior' themes are so attractive to so many of us in contemporary times.
Aside from the horrific realities that inevitably took place, my strongest hypothesis is that we experience a kind of kinship inside these stories. These communities seem intimate when compared to modern times. In today's urban life we see countless faces on a daily basis, but most of us wouldn't take a bullet for them. I'm not suggesting that nobody would do heroic deeds; I'm saying that there's no comradery. I also think that comradery is as rare as wisdom, because it's not something you can just make.
If I'm correct about the sense of comradery, kinship, and intimacy being what we crave from these stories, I can think of one scenario where those elements arose naturally. It would require the decay of modern powerful nations, the promotion of tribes, and the everlasting sense of danger. The bloodshed would harden those who witness it. The high frequency of death would likely make everyone more patient with those tribesmen who annoy us. The scarcity of resources, craftsmen, and strong warriors would be invaluable, therefore everyone *must* pull their weight.
Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting that I want such a risky life. I'm merely speculating what the natural order of mankind may look like.

This quote resonates with our modern geocentric times.
"It was natural for [Spartan women] to think and speak as Gorgo, the wife of Leonidas, is said to have done, when some foreign lady, as it would seem, told her that the women of Lacedaemon were the only women of the world who could rule men; "with good reason," she said, "for we are the only women who bring forth men"
Now, what I get from that quote is that Gorgo is telling the woman that Spartan women have the freedoms they have because they give birth to real men who aren't threatened by them.
In the 300 film they had Gorgo tell this to a man instead of a woman because they wanted it to be directed towards men for feminist empowerment, but it was actually directed towards women because it is them who misunderstood how Spartan women move with their men: they know their role.

You Gyspies ask each other to find Gypsies? Same thing are a Traveling man. My cousin Andrew Sinclair wrote a book. Rosslyn: Templar, Gypsies and Bonacburn. You know Macedonians today just hate Gypsies. But in England in 1650. A Gypsy is the best friend a Macedonian ever had. So we were not so snobby. Philosophy is not for everyone, either you born with it or not, and there’s a thin line between knowledge and wisdom. I have been writing more than 100 quotes and it will be shared one day on TH-cam.

I have a good voice as well, that’s what people tell me:) however you’re dancing at the top of mountain when it comes to to that. My favorite philosophy is Nietzsche and it took me years to understand such a mind. “In loneliness the lonely one eats himself; in crowds many eat him.” Now choose ??!?
      Nietzsche
I also feel alone among 100 people, instead of being with them …I choose to be alone, in that my time doesn’t become stolen by masses.
Great job from you and I share and recommend to people in Sweden. And I really wish that I had discovered your channel earlier.
However I think the Universe didn’t give me this before, obviously I had to go through a few things before:)
The nature never gives anything for free unfortunately.
Thanks for beautiful quotes. What makes it so special that is: YOU 💖
I listen to same quotes from a few others on TH-cam which was catastrophic.
Again thanks 😊 brother because I don’t feel alone anymore at home, since you are talking to me.

such an understatement, especially considering they had lost earlier? Philip prepared the road for Alexander. Sparta was not the aggressor, but I assume they refused to bend the knee?

    Thank you for the post.
Thank you for giving the opportunity to TH-cam users to understand a fraction of the Greek ideal.
Because history is a circle, to be understood by everyone and especially by aggressive neighbors, WE ARE NOT AFRAID.
What happened 4000 years ago may happen again BUT, we will still be here guarding Thermopylae defending Western civilization.
We have been living here, we live here, and we will be living here on this tiny rock until life ends on earth.
You can threaten us every day, you do not scare us, you trust us.
As for Mr. Tselik's and his president Mr. Erdogan recent threats that one night they will come to us, it makes us laugh.
Our answer remains the same even though 4 millennia have passed.

    • @gantzllat
      @gantzllat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

They where laconic, they where taught since childhood to answer with few words, but a lot of punch. Some honorable mentions of this practice include.
Athenian: Is the spartan arm not strong enough to hold anything longer than a kitchen knife?
Spartan: Is long enough to reach your heart.
when questioned why a soldier spartan had a life size fly emblassed on his shield, the Spartan answered "for you is a fly, to my enemy, it will be a giant"
when a soldier spartan saw what he believed to be a ghost, he ran at it with a spear yelling "Don't run you coward, so I may kill you twice"

the difference between having a bodyguard is that you either know what you're doing, or you take for granted a good service to your fellow being, thus the reason why those who do good deeds and are loved by all the righteous don't need to be protected by any individuals provided... but the people will rise up in the anguish of their falling.
