My thoughts exactly, contenders knew he was a difference maker in the playoffs. Even if he doesn't contribute a lot every single game, in the games that matter he wakes up and seals the deal for his squad.

He only has two legitimate championships and that was in 2005 and 2007. His first two with the Rockets were only because Jordan retired. He shouldnt have won any with the Lakers. All the ones with Shaq and Kobe were rigged because the NBA needed a new dynasty to replace the Bulls. The trail blazers should have won in 2000. The 76ers should have won in 2001. (Unfortunately they traded kukoc and an "injured" Ratliff to the Hawks earlier that year).The Kings should have won in 2002.

I second everything in this video. But there's actually even more to Big Shot. There were so many games where he wasn't hitting the game winner, but hit a big 3 in the last 2 minutes to end a run or put a team away. Not just shooting either. Big time clutch rebounds and defensive plays. Hands down the GOAT roleplayer. He's as clutch as Larry, Micahel, or Kobe. The only difference being that he wasnt a shot creator, but a shot taker. I'm blessed to have watched his entire career. Dude belongs in the hall of fame.

Nice job on the video! I think Rob even outside of the ridiculous clutch shenanigans was the ideal archetype for a role player 4 in the 90s and 00s- he could stretch the floor with his 36% (this would just be decent today but was really rare for a guy his size then) from 3pt in the playoffs but was still a big body that could bang with the bruisers of that era inside. He also could be an oversized 3 because of his shooting, adding even more size on the defensive end in that role. The perfect fit along side post scoring bigs like Hakeem, Shaq, and Duncan.
I remember when he came into the league it was a huge surprise that a guy his size and position could take and make threes. It was unheard of. Before him the only big to shoot threes was Laimbeer, unless you count Larry Bird as a true big. To me Horry was the first to leverage the threat of the three to drive, or the threat of the drive to shoot the three, and that has had a huge impact on the game.
He is, to me, the GOAT of Role Players. On the list of Role Players, he’s the only guy whose name is not out of place on a list of All Time Clutch Shooters with Bird, MJ, Allen, and Reggie Miller.
Just because Horry doesn't take a ton of shots doesn't mean he didn't have massive impact. He was a top defender, made very few turnovers, rarely got fouls in key situations and scored when it mattered. In a team game, the best teammate who make the right play should be rewarded. He was smart and wouldn't contest things he'd get called for fouls. He spaced the floor, played help defense and reacted to passing lanes. He got a bunch of steals while having a low foul rate and one the best plus-Minuses in the league. He plays just like modern players and they didn't understand it back then. He should be a hall-of-famer because he played the game like he should and should get rewarded for taking less risks and winning. I remember him taking over a few regular season games as well. Jordan said Horry was one of the best, what else do you need?

You missed out game 4 of the WCF 1996, where Rob shot 5/6 threes and 15pts in the fourth to lead the Rockets into OT after trailing by 20 in the fourth. That was one of the greatest performances I ever saw (and damn scary as the Sonics fan I am 😅…)

As a fellow basketball historian I’ve always told my friends about how much I think Big Shot Rob should be a hall of famer. AMEN brother! When you play on teams the best players ever you are pretty damn lucky. However, he was the perfect compliment to those players. He contributed every single game and stepped up big when needed to. He is one of those few players you could put on any team and that team would be better for it.

The 93 Playoffs were the first NBA postseason I ever watched. I liked Horry's game immediately. I remember in particular a possession where he got the ball at the left elbow, faced up, drove to the right past his man and leapt with the ball elevated in one hand as high as possible like he expected to dunk (kind of like 8:27, except without a defender there) only to switch it at the last possible moment in front of the rim to a soft, tight finger roll. The whole sequence was so smooth. In high school and college through the late 90's and early 2000's I always mentioned Horry anytime I was in a discussion about favorite NBA players. And when he retired I said that if I could have anyone's NBA career it would be his. All the success, tons of credit, but without the pressure of being a first or second offensive option. It was crazy how he or Kerr won every title from 1994-2003

We are not crying about the Horry shot, we are crying because of the Horry shot, the terrible reffing in game 6, and the choke job at home in game 7. If any one of those 3 things go differently the Kings win in 02. Of those 3, the Horry shot bothers me the least.

The 2005 Finals might just be the most slept on, unspoken Finals since the Magic and Bird era no joke. No one ever talks about it, and you barely ever see highlights. Honestly, I think every single ring won since 1980 gets more content made about it today and in the past few years than that specific Spurs ring, it’s kinda wild.

thanx for this, horry was my fav player growing up, had him traded to all my teams in nba live 95',96',97',98' on the super nintendo. I remember convicing my dad how good horry really was and after the 95' playoffs he was convinced.
to be completely honest - he just deserve HoF. At the end of the day personal stats are just that - personal stats. What count is winning and it is team game. Sure, some can score 40,50,60. Do some magic dunks. But if they are not winning? It does still matter, sure. But hell, it matter lot less. He was beast when it was needed. He is responsible for success of multiple HoF guys; across multiple teams. And sheer quantity of rings that he have deserve highest respect. TBH I feel that he should be more of role model for younger players; to show that you do not have to be super flashy and basket is team game. You have to have full drive to win when it count (oh, and actually being really great player help too ;)) and put results as main goal. BTW - damn great vid.

I think that should be His Hall Of Fame Title. 7 Rings which he actually Instrumented esp. With that buddy check against the Suns when the Spurs where running out of Ideas at age 36. I think He's the Smartest player to watch on a game, relegate himself & go unnoticed till around the very end when it mattered. But before Kobe would come into his own in 2008; Horry would Help the Spurs win another 2 Rings by 36 in 07 the year they took Iverson n Carmelo's Nuggets n Steve Nash's Suns out to win his 7th Ring. Hiorry / Heorry. Is a True Hero, the smartest and was instrumental in every team he played and watched the game & was always out of site like a ghost who only literally always open at the dieing moments of the game to put his team forward with that Clutch 3. I think is only the Spurs that won it b4, during and after Horry came n left. Hakeem Olaguwon's Rockets and Shak Kobe's Lakers didn’t win the Play Offs without Horry. That's they didn't win the playoffs b4 Horry came or after Horry left. So he did 2 with Hakeem, 3 with Shaq-Kobe n 2 for the Spurs. I think he was so smart in choosing teams to move to. Like making sure he left the suns to play for the lakers. I think he always knew the team with the greatest potential to win playoffs to go to next and play for. Its amazing that all the teams he intentionally moved to he won rings with them to finished his Career with 7 rings. Its really amazing. His timing. He just knew the next best team to go to & new when to leave. He did it back to back with the 1st 2 dominant teams Olaguwon's Rockets 2pt 94,95 when Jordan left & Shaqs's 2000/1-2002/3 series. But won for the Spurs not consecutively but almost consecutively, in the 2005 ,07 series. Horry is Truely impeccably great. As a Rockets fan, I absolutely understand his importance to those championship teams. Such a clutch player. I love seeing the film of Hakeem getting the ball to Horry with the game on the line. That shows respect and confidence; many superstars would insist on taking those shots themselves rather than give the ball up for a better shot.
Possibly the most understated player in NBA history. But to those that know, Horry's a literal legend. It's sad that the kids these days will never see him in a playoff game.
The mystery for me, why he couldn't play like that 90% of the time. He not only be in the hall but will be among the greats. Clearly one of the greatest playoffs performers.

AMEN brother! When you play on teams the best players ever you are pretty damn lucky. However, he was the perfect compliment to those players. He contributed every single game and stepped up big when needed to. He is one of those few players you could put on any team and that team would be better for it.
I have watched all of your videos and this one is by far the funniest one you've made, so now you have made me both laugh out loud and almost cry a little to the Bird and LeBron videos.

The 93 Playoffs were the first NBA postseason I ever watched. I liked Horry's game immediately. I remember in particular a possession where he got the ball at the left elbow, faced up, drove to the right past his man and leapt with the ball elevated in one hand as high as possible like he expected to dunk (kind of like 8:27, except without a defender there) only to switch it at the last possible moment in front of the rim to a soft, tight finger roll. The whole sequence was so smooth. In high school and college through the late 90's and early 2000's I always mentioned Horry anytime I was in a discussion about favorite NBA players. And when he retired I said that if I could have anyone's NBA career it would be his. All the success, tons of credit, but without the pressure of being a first or second offensive option.
It was crazy how he or Kerr won every title from 1994-2003

Hell yeah, Big Shot Rob was one of my all-time favorite players since his days with the Rockets. Great tribute to a fantastic player. His defense doesn't get talked about enough.

thanx for this, horry was my fav player growing up, had him traded to all my teams in nba live 95',96',97',98' on the super nintendo. I remember convicing my dad how good horry really was and after the 95' playoffs he was convinced.

to be completely honest - he just deserve HoF. At the end of the day personal stats are just that - personal stats. What count is winning and it is team game. Sure, some can score 40,50,60. Do some magic dunks. But if they are not winning? It does still matter, sure. But hell, it matter lot less. He was beast when it was needed. He is responsible for success of multiple HoF guys; across multiple teams.
And sheer quantity of rings that he have deserve highest respect.
TBH I feel that he should be more of role model for younger players; to show that you do not have to be super flashy and basket is team game. You have to have full drive to win when it count (oh, and actually being really great player help too ;)) and put results as main goal.

Clayton. Thanks for this Video. This is the best analysis n compilation of Horry's greatness. He's indeed the best Role Player of all time. I think that should be His Hall Of Fame Title. 7 Rings which he actually Instrumented esp. With that buddy check against the Suns when the Spurs where running out of Ideas at age 36. I think He's the Smartest player to watch on a game, relegate himself & go unnoticed till around the very end when it mattered.
Honestly I noticed Horry the 1st time when he saved the Spurs in the 2005 season's game 5. I didn't know he has been literally saving the big winning teams since Olaguwon n the LA Lakers men!!!!! Game 3 @ Philly could had easily been Iverson's game but for Horry again, and game 3 against Iverson and Carmelo's Nuggets Hurry was there again for the spurs.
I didn't know they where down 2-1 to the Kings in 02/03. & where loosing for the kings to make it 3-1 in game 4 but for Horry who was there to help the Lakers tie it 2-2. & win their last Series.
I think its safe to say that when Horry left the lakers after giving the Shaq-Kobi team their 3pt 3rd ring, that Lakers didn't win another ring till Kobe came into his Own. But before Kobe would come into his own in 2008; Horry would Help the Spurs win another 2 Rings by 36 in 07 the year they took Iverson n Carmelo's Nuggets n Steve Nash's Suns out to win his 7th Ring.
Hiorry / Heorry. Is a True Hero, the smartest and was instrumental in every team he played and watched the game & was always out of site like a ghost who only literally always open at the dieing moments of the game to put his team forward with that Clutch 3.
I think is only the Spurs that won it b4, during and after Horry came n left. Hakeem Olaguwon's Rockets and Shak Kobe's Lakers didn’t win the Play Offs without Horry. That's they didn't win the playoffs b4 Horry came or after Horry left.
So he did 2 with Hakeem, 3 with Shaq-Kobe n 2 for the Spurs.
I think he was so smart in choosing teams to move to. Like making sure he left the suns to play for the lakers.
I think he always knew the team with the greatest potential to win playoffs to go to next and play for. Its amazing that all the teams he intentionally moved to he won rings with them to finished his Career with 7 rings.
Its really amazing. His timing. He just knew the next best team to go to & new when to leave.
He did it back to back with the 1st 2 dominant teams Olaguwon's Rockets 2pt 94,95 when Jordan left & Shaqs's 2000/1-2002/3 series. But won for the Spurs not consecutively but almost consecutively, in the 2005 ,07 series.
Horry is Truely impeccably great.
If Not for this video I wouldn't know Horry was there throughout Olaguwon's 2pt n Shaq's Lakers 3pt. Only really knew & noticed him at Spurs 05 Buzzer Game 6, Clutch 3 to level the Spurs up 3-3 & force a game 7 against the defending Champs Chancy Billups, Hamilton , The Wallaces' Pistons.

As a Rockets fan, I absolutely understand his importance to those championship teams. Such a clutch player. I love seeing the film of Hakeem getting the ball to Horry with the game on the line. That shows respect and confidence; many superstars would insist on taking those shots themselves rather than give the ball up for a better shot.
