I was wondering for deaf people how do they contact the emergency services eg police or someone for help if they were by themselves or something happened to a hearing person they where with which makes them unable to call for help?
@@shanemannion7929 for a deaf person they can still call the police but when the police come to the house or where ever u live they will ask u if u need a interpreter or if u understand them

A funny moment:
My sister didn’t get her cochlears until she was 5 years old. Until then she didn’t know that when you flush the toilet it made a loud noise. So we were at a restaurant and she had to go potty so for the first time she flushed the toilet and it startled her so bad! She had no idea the toilet made noise when you flush.

little bit like the story I heard of one girl being blind wasn't aware that when she was in the car people could see into her car when travelling, something she had not thought of before as she could not ( obviously ) see into other cars. :) It's all the little things we as hearing or sighted people don't think of
When I started wearing my hearing aids again almost 5 years ago, I was terrified of vacuum cleaners. They were so loud and sudden that it scared the crap out of me. My favorite memory was when I was working and I turned around to see a coworker setting up the vacuum. I literally couldn't run fast enough before she turned it on. Nowadays though, my hearing has finally pretty much left the building. There's no sound in my right ear and my left has little hearing left. The vacuum doesn't really bother me anymore.
@@sandieM27 Molly Burke is a blind woman who has a youtube channel. She did a video of the top 10 things she didn't know people could see. She describes this, but from the other perspective - being in a car, and having the driver say, "Oh, looks like that family is all watching a movie." And she started being more mindful closing her curtains in her bedroom after that.

I wonder if actually it’s healthier the way Ryan breathes playing sports. Like, do we regulate our breathing for social reasons when actually we should breathing louder?
I find that I have to sigh a lot. I naturally hold my breath when I concentrate or listen. But because people think it's rude to sigh I let the sigh out jaggedly (not sure how else to describe it) honestly if I wasn't around people I'd sigh normally or maybe even breath more normally 🤷🏼♀️.
Wow this is a really good question! My doctor said my heart beat is very healthy, maybe it's because my blood is oxygen rich?

krismmi that’s what my chiropractor said about my daughter. Says she breathes from her belly which is good, a good habit!
Well, I can say that I hang out with elite athletes (almost became one, but, you know) and we are all heavy breathers. My partner mentions it every once in a while.
I am a professional harpist and wanted to share a story with you. I was playing a wedding reception and a little girl came up and was VERY interested in the harp. I stopped to ask if she would like to come closer and see it, she just looked at me. Her brother told me that she was completely deaf and could not understand what I was saying or doing. Using ASL, I asked the little girl to place her hands on the soundboard of the harp and then I played a grand glissando so she could "feel" the music. Her reaction was amazing and she was VERY excited. I also let her place her hands on the strings as I played. On the harp, some strings vibrate even when you do not pluck them. From then on, the wedding reception was about me and this little girl. Precious.

I teared up when you said “home should be a safe place” and it made me realize maybe there’s a ton of deaf people that live with hearing people that scold them for making sounds. And how exhausting that could be. I’m sorry to anyone who has to deal with that❤️ I hope people become more aware of how hard it can be to make sure EVERY sound is kept down...
Absolutely that made me more aware myself as my husband is deaf and I'm Hoh, yet I still scold him often because it's annoying. But this made me wake up more to be nicer as they just can't help it and home should be a place where it's safe and comfortable.
Ryan, your sign is so expressive and beautiful. I love how you use your whole face and body. It's like theater! But I also love how Ellen signs so simply. I think because Ellen learned to sign for you, and probably 99% of the time she is signing with just you, her sign language is almost like "abbreviated" because you know each other so well you understand her even when her gestures are very small. I find that quite sweet and lovely because it shows how close you are. My favorite thing in your videos is to watch your eyes when Ellen is signing because I can see you "listening" to her. You are just a terrific couple and I really enjoy your channel.
My mother was a teacher of the deaf so I had a lot of deaf people and sign language around when I was a child. I wish I remembered all the ESL I learned when I was little, it's mostly gone now, but I sure love remembering little bits of it watching you too! Thank you for your channel.
when I first began watching the clips I was thinking that there was no way that Ellen was actually signing properly as it didn't look possible that she was making sense :) Probably because I am more used to watching Auslan and don't know ASL and was new to it all :)

Sandra Joy I speak NSL (Norwegian sign language) and there is a huge difference when interpreting vs "hanging out" signs 🙈 my hands get all sloppy, while when I'm interpreting I'm really conscious about being expressive. My interpreting signing is quite "big" and expressive, while my "stay home and just do nothing"-signs are sloppy, and instead of doing signs where I'm supposed to do them, like on my cheek or head, I just do them lower. You kind of have to get used to other people's sign language though, after a while you just understand what they say, but if you just meet someone - the "sloppy" signing can be a pain in the ass 😜
I know this an older video, but I was thinking the same. When I used to watch Switched At Birth, I used to tell my husband that the guy who played Emmett talked lazy with his hands, like if he were speaking he would be mumbling. There was no way I could ever try to pick up what he signed! Lol
This might be a weird question, but when you sleep do your dreams have people signing, people talking but with captions, or just no talking at all? Please let me know because I’m really curious

I’m deaf but I have cochlear implants so it might be different. I do hear voices and sounds since I have experienced them with my implants. However, I know for a fact that completely deaf people that haven’t heard a single sound before, don’t hear sounds when their dreaming. Similar with blind people, if they were blind from birth, they’ll only experience sound, touch, smells, and maybe even see colors while they’re dreaming. Hope that answers your question!
Also do you have an internal monologue (not everyone does- some people think in images/concepts). If so, is your internal monologue in the form of signing? Some hearing people also talk quietly to themselves when sorting out their thoughts, and I have seen my old Deaf instructor sign to herself to do this. Love you both 🤟🏾🤟🏾
I'm really curious about that kind of thing too. I've been around ASL and deaf culture most of my life and I know it's not something a deaf person even thinks about but I've thought about it. For example hearing people have that little voice n their head when they think or whatever, how does that work with the deaf?

Ryan, I never thought about how emotionally exhausting it might be to constantly be thinking about what noises you are making in public. Think of it this way though, you know if you smell something for a while and you go nose-blind to it and don’t notice a smell anymore? Hearing people are constantly hearing noises and random sounds, so I’d bet that 99% of the sounds you make in public, strangers don’t notice at all cause we tend to tune things out. And even if people do notice I bet most of the time they wouldn’t care or think anything of it. Don’t overthink it 😁
Yes! This is very true. Just like with touch, like you put on a wool sweater and it's kinda scratchy for the first few moments but then an hour later you don't feel it unless you focus on it? That's how a lot of hearing is like. Like the AC kicking on/blowing and TV on in the background and other background noises. It alllll goes to the back of our minds to where we don't "hear" it, unless we focus/become mindful of it. I think that's partly why sudden loud noises scare us so much. It disrupts that background noise. It'd be like being in a nice calm pool with your eyes closed and then WAM! someone flips your raft or splashes you.

Dime there is a pulse present there but generally your neck should not make audible heart noises haha
Edit: I watched longer and Ellen said she could hear it, so I guess it is possible, but sometimes you can hear your own blood in your ear so it could be that too
Hearing should be able to hear it. That's where the jugular is at. One of the fattest arteries in the human body.
@@NeptunianHermitess I hear my blood or my heartbeat when there are no noises around me and I put my head on the pillow. This also happens when I have headphones without music. I think the sound it's because the sound can resonate

I think it would be interesting if y’all did an interview with Ryan’s mom/dad talking about raising a deaf child and how they took to Ellen when they first met/dated. I believe that would very insightful to the differences and entertaining to hear/see their perspective on the deaf/hearing relationship. Just a thought but I love the videos very educational and inspiring!
I would LOVE to learn more about Ryan's childhood. Is his family hearing? How did he and his family adjust to having a Deaf son? Did they all learn sign language together? How did they support him through bullying? From what they've said about her so far, his mom sounds amazing 🤩!!

I have a condition called pulsatile tinnitus, so I can always hear my heartbeat in one ear. It’s a sort of “whooshing” sound. It used to annoy me so much, but I’ve learned not to take anything for granted :)
OMW, is that what it is? I've had SSD since 2018 and tinnitus still new to me although my 24/7 friend :_( And sometimes ill be doing nothing, and I can hear the pounding whoosh in my ear (do you notice someone can be talking next to you and you won't hear them over it?). I never knew that its a separate part of tinnitus. I could never explain it to my doctor. Thank you so much.
Wow. I have always been able to hear my own heartbeat in my ears. I honestly thought everyone could! I’ve had tinnitus since childhood, can’t remember anything else. Don’t know what true silence is like.
Yep, tinnitus is difficult to diagnose or find a cause for. There are also so many different kinds, it’s very interesting to read about. I’m seeing a new audiologist soon, so I hope that goes well!
Atiyyah Makada Oh my gosh, I’m a dancer and the sound gets louder when my heart beats faster, so I totally understand what you mean. I usually just wear one AirPod since I can’t hear anything in the other ear because of the noise haha.

Just wanna say, I just recently discovered your channel and I love your videos and the additive behind it. You guys have inspired me to be more open and proud of being deaf. I was born hard of hearing that gradually got worse until I became deaf at a very young age. At 4 years, couldn’t even speak a word and I only knew a few animal signs. As I got older, I learned sign language and I got cochlear implants. Now, I can say that I speak and hear very well but in my teen years, I got very insecure about being deaf. Your videos have helped me to feel better about myself and to be proud of my deafness. I wish I had found your channel sooner because it would have helped a lot in middle school. So I just wanna say you for everything you do, and know that you are changing people’s lives! ❤️❤️❤️
Continue to be proud of being deaf. Deaf culture is so beautiful especially signing. All that goes into expressing one's self holds so much beauty and passion.

2 things I keep get tell off because noise I make cos I don’t hear them:
1) Knife and fork noise on plate. Sometime I forget be slowly gently on plate when hungry.
2) Open food container lid off, apparently make lot of noise like lock and lock container.
ohh yeah those things are loud! lol
I was shook when Ellen said she could hear her own heartbeat when she works out. I've never heard mine without a stethoscope. She must have crazy good hearing!

As a person with asthma I can hear my heartbeat often enough. It gets really annoying and when I'm running and doing sports it annoys me so much, it drives me crazy sometimes

Wow, I got a bit emotional at 4:15 when you two were discussing heartbeats. Of all the, "firsts," lying together, still, quiet, hearing or especially feeling your partner's heart beat, there's an intimacy to that that's like no other.
when you asked if when she woke up and couldn’t hear herself breathing if she’d be scared, I was just thinking “YES!”, it would terrify me. I live alone so I probably hear myself more, and am probably a little more conscious of it so that I can be aware of sounds that are out of place, so it becomes like a rhythm. thank you to the person who asked this, I might focus on the sensations more from now on rather than just the sound. If one day I can’t hear myself breathing but I can feel it, I’ll probably be less scared than I would’ve been

No, I think what I miss is being able to talk sometimes but I never miss having someone voice to me.

Do you mean like when you read or think? I believe the technical term is "internal monologue" and funnily enough I recently some random vids show up in my suggesteds about the subject. They didn't even touch on deafness and how that may impact it, but apparently there's a (likely small) number of hearing people who don't have an internal monologue/inner voice. This one girl that the guy was talking to about it was saying she doesn't hear it in her head when she thinks, reads etc, she said she might see images or such or just absorb the information allowing her to read more quickly.
One psychologist thinks there may be 4 different types of people when it comes to internal monologue but another thinks those who say they don't have that voice actually do but just maybe don't interpret it right or something (idk the guy was super confusing).
Personally, I hear myself when I read but I feel like I rarely "talk to myself" in my head or think in that way... example: I hear myself reading it as I write this and I hear if I sit and mentally compose before writing something, but, if i was trying to decide what to eat for lunch I wouldn't stand in front of the fridge talking it out in my head "do I want cheese in my sandwich or ham? Do I even want a sandwich or something else", etc, I might _very_ rarely say a thought aloud: "hmm cheese or ham?", but it seems some people do the former, IDK how frequent that is and how it ties in with the frequency of reading internally. I always thought that "thinking" (like that debate about lunch) was just something exaggerated for movies but it was whatever, never occurred to me that some hearing people apparently lack that voice completely though, I still can't get my head around the way that girl was trying to explain how it works for her lol.
But anyway, I suspect if hearing people are that diverse with it then deaf people are probably the same (some do have an internal monologue and others don't)? 🤷♀️

I’m hearing. A few years ago I was surfing in Nicaragua and had a bad wipe out on a wave and almost drowned. A week before that, I scuba dove while I had a cold. Back in the states, my hearing went away for like a week. I woke up one morning and couldn’t hear. I banged on my bedroom walls and couldn’t hear anything. I’m back to hearing, but that experience taught me a lot so I started ASL classes, but then COVID hit and they stopped. I know only a few signs, but you guys are inspiring me again and I’m learning by watching you, so thank you! You are both captivating too!

We do that all the time in deaf circles. 🤣🤣🤣 Or on phone calls. 🤣 Be half ass looking at the screen chiming in with a nod or "wow" or "crazy" or "really?!" 🤣🤣🤣 Especially when were all doing other stuff with our hands, minimally signing. 😝 These two just got great communication skills lol there's a version of that in signing relationships as well. 🤣 Or talking over each other, or yelling.
@@megdalenagonzalez-mounce1776 in deaf circles yes, but their relationship is unique one is hearing and one isn't. So both pay more attention to each other to be sure they catch everything they're saying to each other. Thus the intimacy is enhanced.

Hi you two! I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all of your videos, the information you share, common questions answered, and allowing all of us into your life.
I recently bought a house with my husband, and we have wonderful neighbors who happen to be deaf. ( My husband and I are hearing) I took sign language in grade school, and all but remembered the abc's. I remember enjoying sign language a lot when I was little. ( I'm 35 now.)
I felt this yearning and urgency, and wanted to be able to communicate with them, and understand them...get to know them, and let them get to know me.
I've been teaching myself for the past month, writing down 20-30 words/phrases every day. My husband helps test me each week with my notepad. I struggle mostly with understanding fingerspelling, because its so fast!! Im working on it. :) And I'm catching on.
And here I am...I stumbled upon Sign Duo! And you both have helped me appreciate/understand/respect deaf culture. And it helps watching you both sign and interact.
It gives me perspective.
I've recently been reading about ASL grammar.. time-topic-comment-referent.
That is confusing for my mind, while trying to sign. However, I notice on your videos, you sign in the order in which a person would speak it. I hope this isn't a silly question, but do you sign in that way for videos, or is that how best you communicate,, or does one use ASL grammar as a "shorthand" way to get the message across efficiently?

this video was unexpectedly sweet :) The explanation Ellen gave about home being a safe place melted my heart. Noise is definitely a little thing, but it’s a much bigger deal if you have to constantly be aware of it while not being able to tell. I’m always in awe of the extent to how considerate (to each other and to strangers) Ellen and Ryan are.

I have a question, have you ever wondered what hearing was like or if you ever had any moments where you have said, "I never knew you could hear that." I know someone who is blind and she will say things like, "Oh I didn't know you could see into other peoples cars" or "I never thought that you could see detail on the moon." and I was wondering if you have had any of those moments in your life.

First day I got hearing aids I went to the bathroom in the Costco where I had gotten them. Quiickly realized that I had made it well into my thirties not realizing other folks can hear you pee! I guess I sort of knew if it was super quiet, small room at home and listened hard I made some sort of noise when I peed but had no clue that folks in other stalls could hear you and you can hear them!!! Spent the rest of that afternoon crowd sourcing on social media if my hearing aids were special or just average hearing folks can just hear everyone peeing away in Costco! Also, hair and clothing make noise! Who knew?!?! Not me.

So Ryan said he can’t hear a lot of things, so what can you hear? Like can you hear certain things and some things you can’t?
If he's severely deaf, he wouldn't be able to hear anything. He could feel vibrations such as an engine or loud thunder. Vibrations is basically the waves that sound passes through. The energy from the sound waves can cause vibrations in things you feel like a fan or a person stomping. Vibrations are basically the physical form of sound but its not sensed by hearing, it's felt with touch. I hope this helps you understand!

You two are awesome. It's been a tough isolation for us over here, and I've just been binging your videos. It makes me feel close to you (weird, I know) that I can understand the signs you're making, but also, talking about stuff like farts and poo.... I have two little boys here at home, and that's literally my every day. It brightened the evening a bit to see you two giggle over it.
These videos are so insightful and really give you another outlook on life. Like after watching your vids it shows me not to take anything for granted like those little noises that we sometimes overlook, like when you talked about the squeaking chair like it made me realise it isn’t only someone’s voice you can’t hear but also even the little noises like breathing too loud, etc. like I used to overlook those things and never took them into consideration as noises that the deaf were unable to hear so i really appreciate these vids giving me a better understanding and a new outlook on disabilities. You truly are such a positive person and I appreciate this as ur vids give me an opportunity to be grateful for what I have and not take what I’m given for granted. Thank you so much for these vids honestly! ❤️

So my brother’s friend is also deaf and he has implants so he can hear and when he isn’t wearing them he can read people’s lips. Is that a way for you to communicate to others?
Reading lips is a good skill to learn but it’s not always effective. Most of it is just guessing seriously. For example, p, b, ms are very similar so if someone said, I have a mug, it might look like I have a pog or I have a bog. But those last two options don’t make sense so it would be mug. So it takes skill, guessing, and logic to lipread. Hope this was helpful!

DeafDragonArtist well his lip reading is really accurate and he understands what we’re saying.
Reading lips may help me only understand about 30% of the whole sentence. But I would not be able to understand if u speak to me slowly, word by word. In fact, I only need two or three keywords to guess and make up the full sentence.
@@isaiahnytes5405 that I what I'm saying. It takes a lot of practice to be able to recognize the shapes that mouths make when they form words. For a beginner, it would be hard for them to tell the difference between letters that make the same shape. More experienced and skilled lipreaders will have more ease reading lips. I'm a fairly good lipreader because I use it when I'm not using my cochlears. But with enough practice and experience, you can lip-read effecively. I was just saying that's letters often look similar so it does include logic and guessing along with skill and that it can be difficult for beginners.
Ryan - your signing is amazingly easy for me to follow. Usually I struggle a LOT more. The way the hands are positioned near the face. And yes, I realize it's because y'all are in a vehicle, but that makes it easier for me to connect all the visual cues that I'm getting.
Between watching your mouth, the signs and the close captioning, I am having to rely less and less on reading what you're saying. Until you get excited, then I just read because I can't keep up.
Watching you is about the easiest way to pick up signing that I've found.

I know your intentions are well, but as someone who can't have kids and have gotten people saying these things to me before, you never know someone else's situation. Maybe they can't, or maybe they don't want them. Maybe they aren't ready or maybe for personal, work, or insurance reasons getting married isn't what is best right now. Just be conscious when you make these kinds of statements.

LOVE your videos...thank you SO much for being willing to teach and share! I have asthma and am going deaf...if I don't have my hearing aids in, I can't hear my wheezing! I never post comments on YT, but I just had to say THANK YOU for helping motivate me to learn sign language during this pandemic.
I started learning in January. Trying to learn with these masks and without any events to meet people who sign has been TOUGH. You two have to helped me continue to learn and stay excited about it this entire year. I can finally watch your videos without CC at all, and today I had the confidence to sign with a deaf child at work. You two have made a big impact on me, and I truly appreciate it.

Wait so you mean that if Ryan’s in a life-threatening situation (God forbid he does), he can’t hear himself or like the problem that’s happening with him?
I'd say there are relatively few life-or-death situations that rely only on hearing your own body noises to notice. Most come with other sensations, like feeling.
Thank you for this channel Sign Duo/Trio! I have Spasmodic Dysphonia which inhibits my speech daily. I am learning ASL to be able to communicate without the struggle of speaking. Your channel is truly a blessing! Please know that I also am self conscious in public because speech is difficult and people don’t understand what I am saying. Thank you for allowing your channel to help with vocabulary and communication! You both are amazing people!
Dude it's so wild cause he's so good at mouthing words that I feel like I can hear what he's saying. It's like someone talking and I have headphones on. Cause if you had your volume all the way down you'd think he was talking! And I think that's sooooooo helpful for if a deaf person and a hearing person who has no sign knowledge, are communicating!!!
