Dave's Peach Polar bunny tied in the 80's did this. This is the same pattern, just with a bead and feather at the head. Can find the tying video on YT also.

I'm assuming on still water this is fished under an indicator of some type. Do you impart movement to it or just let it ride? I fish a lot of super slow water or ponds so I'm definitely interested in your technique.
@@neosovereign5954 I’m not sure if you’re asking Devin or me but I use it on different sink tips. Lately I’ve used it on a 3 inch per second line. Right after ice off I used 7” per second line and stripped it back slow. I have tried it under an indicator but balanced leeches work better for me under an indicator. Hope that helps
@@neosovereign5954 I tie it on a straight shank hook and strip it in stillwaters though you could certainly use it on a jig hook under an indicator. I wouldn’t tie it as heavy though.
I like the body technique. I tie a similar pattern but only palmer the chenille and then simply bring the squirrel over the top--this technique blends the materials nicely. Dyed mallard also looks good in place of the soft hackle and gives some barring/texture to the shoulder of the fly.

I wrap back over the stem with my thread, which protects it from teeth, plus flairs the fibers more. It works great if there is a bead or lead wrap to "jam" the flair up against. I find that mallard maintains shape better than soft hackle, which tends to collapse on the strip. I tried to borrow from musky streamers that give the illusion of bulk without actually adding more material.

I know folks who have tied streamers on 1/4 oz and 1/8 oz jig heads for use with Euro nymphing rods. As long as you can cast it, the rod can handle it.

Devin does it matter if the leather part of the tail is riding up or down? Other patterns with sinker or rabbits they’ll poke a hole through the tail and thread it on so the fur portion rides up, curious on your thoughts
I’ve tried it both ways. I haven’t found that it makes much difference. On the really thin squirrel or mink strips it’s hard to poke the hook through without breaking the strip so it’s easier to do it the way I do it this video. Otherwise you could tie in the tail “upside down” and tie the body in separately if you want to invert the tail strip.
How do you typically adjust you leader from the micro-leader set-up when fishing streamers? I feel like I'm about to break my rod and tippet when I fish a micro-leader with all the additional weight of these jig streamers.
I'm not sure what you mean by throwing them double weighted. But normally when I'm fishing these on a Euro rig I tend to use a longer 3 or 4 weight Euro rod.

@@rickconyers5873 You do need a little more power than a soft 2 weight but it's as much because of the hooksets required for larger gauge hooks as it is for the casting.
You can certainly tie it larger if you want. Because I'm often "nymphing" it on a Euro leader, I tie it smaller to keep the sink rate higher since larger versions will have more surface area which reduces sink rate. I haven't had a hard time getting large trout to eat a size 8 but feel free to try whatever size you feel confident in.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 Thank you. I fish a river that has large lake-run trout in the winter and they like to hold deep in the undercut banks and pools. These areas are often 5-6 feet deep, and sometimes deeper depending on flows. I can usually successfully fish the trout in the deep pools with standard nymphs, but getting something deep under the banks is more difficult. Since there are many small/young trout in the river in the summer/early fall, but very few, that I can find, in the winter, I've been thinking that in the winter the larger lake-run fish are eating the 3-6 inch young-of-the-year trout. So I'd like to try a larger version of this pattern, hoping I can lob it a maximum of about 20 feet or so across the river on the same Euro rod and leader that I'm already nymphing the deep holes with with, hoping the streamer will get down deep under the banks quickly.
@@acorad1 give it a go and see what happens. Tie a few smaller ones with a lot of weight as well. They should get into those undercuts a little more quickly.
Devin, curious about your thoughts on the orientation of the fur strip with the leather side facing "up" vs "down" when fishing while oriented by the jig? have you tried both? any pros/cons worth commenting on? ex: mayer's mini leech has the fur facing towards the hook. i believe cheech has a few flies with the fur oriented that way too.
Nice pattern. One suggestion would be to clarify the tail length at the beginning of the video. You can get a sense for it later in the video, looks to be about 1.5-2x shank length. Thanks for the tutorial.
Usually 5x if I'm fishing it on a Euro nymph leader. If you tie it on a straight hook and cast and retrieve it in rivers or streams, then I would fish 3x or 2x.
Why don't you use a spinning rod ,it's easy-to-use and you could add spilt shots to get to the bottom quickly! I have to say you young guys are looking are looking numbers of fish.Thats fine where's your cast ?

Pat, How does the mallard hold up to teeth? I've had issues with the quills and the feather fibers breaking off in the past after a few fish.

Usually solo but you could add a nymph above if you want.

The only adjustment I make is I fish 5x for the tippet.

I've tried both. It doesn't seem to matter much. Because I can tie the tail in and wrap in one step I just have the fur up.
