How to Replace a Transmission | Toyota Camry

  • Here's how to replace an automatic transmission in most front wheel drive Toyota and Lexus vehicles!
    In this video the transmission of this 2006 Toyota Camry SE V6 was burnt up by getting stuck in the snow. More on the background of this vehicle can be found here:
    • Stuck in Snow = Blown ...
    An attempt was made to try and save the transmission with over 360,000km on it by flushing the fluid, cleaning the valve body and using Lucas stop-slip transmission fix:
    • Can Stop-Slip Save thi...
    Regardless, the transmission had to be replaced. A used U151E transmission was sourced from a 2003.5 Toyota Camry V6. The only thing that had to be swapped over was the dipstick and the neutral safety switch.
    Transmission replacement on this car involves dropping the exhaust, the subframe and steering rack, removing the CV axle (and thus suspension on both sides). Up at the top, the air intake assembly, wire harness, dipstick, cooler lines, shifter cables, starter, battery, air resonator and bell housing bolts need to be removed. The engine must be supported (in this case using an engine hoist), before the subframe can dropped down. The flywheel bolts are then disconnected from the torque converter before the transmission can be slid off the passenger side CV axle.
    While the transmission is out of the vehicle, use the opportunity to replace wear items such as the rear main seal, power steering hoses or rack, rear oxygen sensor, engine mounts, sway bar bushings and end links and control arms, which would otherwise be difficult to replace while in the vehicle.

    What an outstanding video. I really appreciate your short, snappy delivery. The first time I did a heavy job like this, I gained appreciation for a transmission jack, because it can tip independently in two planes. Only thing is, floor transmission jacks often need more room than you can find with the minimal clearance gained from standard car jacks, ha ha.

      Good tip.
      I had the crane to help do the heavy lifting.
      Ive seen some people just manhandle manual transmissions up and on there because they are light and don't have a torque converter

    It is worth it cause it will inspire many people to fix their own cars for small failures. Bro trasmission job is really hard even for auto mechanics. My mechanic twisted the whole engine to disengage transmission from the bell housing and one month later my transmission mount ripped apart in half on low speed, the engine dropped down on to the metal engine lower cover and I drove 500 meter with huge vibration. Because my mechanic told me on the phone it was no problem if car goes :DD So I wondered what the problem was since this would kill my whole family at high speed. I started watching videos and looked up books, I saw one of your videos and watched most of your repair videos. Now I can repair a car if I had enough tools. I am not overstating myself because since my childhood I worked as a laborer in industry repairing another type of machines and I have a mechanical engineering diploma now. It is really absurd that my AWD 2013 Lexus RX350 has the same mounting architecture. Same design for control arms, ball joints, bushings, sway bar bushings and links, etc...
    For some reason Toyota/Lexus decided to bury one (only one) control arm bold under engine mount. So you need to take all engine mounts, lift up your engine, raise lower engine mounts, just to be able to reach that stupid control arm bolt!
    Same goes with front lower ball joints. You have to take off front axles, just to be able to reach that stupid 19mm nut.
    Not only that, Lexus manual instructs to drain trans fluid before removing axles! WTF?
    All of that for one stupid nut located directly under front axels that smart Lexus/Toyota designers couldn't increase the clearance just a few millimeters!
    No only that, you will have to make the same party once you change engine starter and alternator. Oh yes, you will have that party for sure since Toyota starters will live ~110k miles, and alternators will live ~130k miles. Tell me otherwise and I will fix it for you for free!
    In short: Lexus/Toyota are cheap and reliable cars but they eventually bust you back with expensive parts and labor.

      Coming back on here after a year. My transmissions developed while driving a clunk while going through the gears. There is no slippage but there is an audible sound and I can feel the clunk. On my prior cars which were over 15 years old and over a hundred thousand miles, it's usually a ring gear in gear and related bushings and bearings issues.
      I think if you take the air conditioner compressor off you might be able to get the the air compressor by the radiator. I think it's only if the body comes off you would have to drain the A/C freon.

    I don't know if you'll find any solace in what I have to say next but here it is anyway;
    I was able to get a link to download the A541E transaxle workshop manual.
    The manual instructions to do everything pretty much as you've done it in this video except for the power steering rack. The manual says to completely disconnected and lay it on top of the cradle that's holding the engine.
    This surprises me cuz it still seems like it would be easier to drop the engine and transmission as one assembly. I guess it means a couple more motor mounts in a few more wiring harnesses to be disconnected.
    With my Solara, I haven't had air conditioning since I bought it 7 years ago so I don't have to worry about EVAP-ing the freon. I still think one could take the air-compressor off the engine and hang it somewhere with all the a/c lines still attached to avoid this issue.
    I was at a Totota dealership over the weekend in West suburban Chicago this past Saturday. The shop manager on duty told me that it would be about an 8-hour labor charge to drop the sub-frame assembly. Currently in febuary 2024 at the shop labor is assessed at $185 U.S.D. per hour. So close to 1,600 schmacks just to drop the subframe assebly.
    The aforementioned also told me that on a warranty claim that came into the shop a few months ago on a 2019 Toyota where the shop had to go through the transmission was about a 29-hour job.
    He then said that with my old 23-year-old Solara that the labor could go up beyond 35-hours because of all the corrosion at age. He says for a job on my car, there is no flat rate. It's basically a stopwatch when the mechanic punches in on the job until when he punches out.

      @speedkar99  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks. I was trying to avoid dealing with rusty power steering lines but I had to anyway. They aren't easy to connect when the rack is in the vehicle.

      The car was neglected, and maintenace on the transmission was never done. I purchased the car and drained the fluids and was going thru everything to get a baseline for maintenance on owning the car and the transmission fluid came out brown, and not a lot came out. I flushed it and put new fluid in and that got it shifting better but then i went to drain and fill tranny fluid again a week later and it was still a disgusting brown. Toyota said when these cars came out to never service the transmission, and I really have no idea why. If this transmission got a regular drain and fill im convinced it would have no issues today... but it was neglected at some point and service was never completed. It's a shame, because otherwise the drivetrain is very good! I feel like the motor is as strong as brand new, no seals leaking, everything is just so tidy other than the transmission that slips sometimes.
