Super Trolley Review - The Darkest ZX Spectrum Game of them All, with Jimmy Savile - Kim Justice

  • Today, we're reviewing Super Trolley - the darkest of all Spectrum games...and only part of that is because of Jim'll Fix It. The actual game itself is, to say the least, depressing, grey and hopeless. Still, enjoy the video!

    The 80s as depicted by US media: Neon, sunglasses, fast cars, wisecracking cops
    The 80s as depicted by UK media: A shellsuited paedo who got away with it fronts a game where you're a shelf-stacker in a supermarket.
    And may I say, how fitting the MGS Psycho Mantis theme is for this

    • @ralphenstein9105
      @ralphenstein9105 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah. With hindsight, it's laughable that anyone could have seen him as anything other than a lowlife scumbag, even just judging by his appearance. It's strange, though, when you never hear about any of the fucked up things someone does, and only see their celebrity status and all their charity work, you think you'd probably get funny looks if you cast aspersions, so you might just give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure I thought he was odd-looking when I was a kid, but he was on the telly all the time, and raised £millions for charity, so I guess I thought I shouldn't judge a paedo by his tracksuit. Savile was apparently very litigious and knew all the right people. He was able to shape his public image very carefully.

    As an American I never head of this guy, sorry, but just from looking at him...others have commented that he genuinely looks like a stereotypical owner of a windowless van (I'm sure those jokes were subtly coming out to the public BECAUSE those rumors about him persisted up to my formative years even in the states, I mean Herbert from Family Guy is a glaring example). I'm just thankful that Mr. Rogers was never revealed to be a monster like Jimmy was, there had been jokes of course but mostly just taking the piss and not based on actual rumors, Fred Rogers was genuinely a good guy to the end.

    To be fair, as a game, it's awful, but as art, I think there's something really special here. The facial expression on the protagonist. Like he's whipped and dead inside. The customers who are all mithering old bags. The fact that cleaning up piss puddles is a highlight because it's something different to fucking do. This is one of those games that if it came out in current year would probably become a meme game on Twitch like Desert Bus or Shower with your Dad Simulator.

    I think you thought I was making stuff up when I said I went to school with the kid who made this but I promise I wasn't! Andrew's mum, Mrs Collett, was our junior school secretary, and he was in the year below me. He lent me his own copy of Super Trolley once, but then I forgot to give it back before the school holidays and his mum phoned my parents to tell them! I got a proper telling off that night xD
    But yeah, I've held and played the actual copy that the "creator" was given by Jimmy on the show. Possibly the weirdest/crappest claim to fame ever, haha.
    Over the past decade, I've kept my eyes out in case he pops up on Facebook in one of the groups/pages for our junior school or area but to no avail so far. I think I might have found the right one the other week actually but don't want to message and ask... I'd look like a nutter if it's not him and just some other Andrew Collett gets a message from me asking if he was on Jimmy Savile!

      they all knew about it at the BBC, what gets me also is Esther Rantzen's apology on camera where she admits she heard rumors about Jimmy Savile and she was one of the main people behind Child Line where kids who were really abused were encouraged to call a help line controlled by the BBC and she did nothing about it. Sometimes I think that Child Line was used as an early warning system for perverts at the BBC to stop or be forewarned by kids who had been abused by them if they were attempting to report them to the police. The whole thing makes me want to puke just thinking about it.

      @@jesuszamora6949 I remember people regularly joking that he probably abused kids. If they'd thought it was real they wouldn't have made the jokes, it was that he looked and seemed like a parody of a pedophile. When kids did report it, it was dismissed as not serious, because the idea he was was a joke already. The huge respect the public had for him for his charity work and marathons, just aided to make him seem saintly, and won him lots of fans in older people and those in authority. He also was friends with Margaret Thatcher, the Royal Family, and had the Police round his place every weekend as invited guests. Witnesses have said he was also a procurer of vulnerable children who he then passed on to clients at parties. These clients may have been important people who wouldn't want their secret getting out. Certainly I can't imagine Saville given his positive reputation acting as a pimp of children to ordinary Joe's. And not for small cash. It would have to be large money, but most probably for power, and self-protection.

    I dont usually enjoy too many flashbacks in reviews, but with this one you did an excellent job. In fact the review is too good for this game, and I'd be tempted to rename the vid "Super Trolley Review - Darkest Jimmy Saville Game of All Time". It was ported to the usual 8 Bit systems and the C64 version is a lot worse. In fact showing the ZX version in this case definitely shows the game in its greatest light. I watched the Lukozer review of the C64 version recently, and thats worse. I'd rather play Mrs Mop and scrub floors than play this game.

    Just happened across this video and it brought back memories. We used to go to an open day in some prison for mental health inmates in Liverpool (ashworth?) in the early 80's. We had the sweet stall (appropriate I suppose seeing as we were just kids). The army was there each year recruiting and some of the inmates would sell things they had made like chess sets etc. Anyway I remember one year meeting Jimmy Saville there. He just walked across a field in a gold tracksuit on his way to the prison, all alone. He was a celebrity so we got our picture taken with him. I still have it somewhere
