    Finally, it's the story of Team17! This video covers the continued history of the company, with Amiga classics like Worms, Alien Breed and Superfrog to games such as The Escapists and Overcooked today. And the small matter of a feud with Amiga Power. Enjoy!

    This is kinda weird for me. I worked at Team17 at the end of the Amiga / early PC days. After being a gamer since the ZX81, and having experienced (as a consumer) studios like US Gold, Ocean, Gremlin, Psygnosis etc, and your excellent videos about them, I find myself on the other side for once. I can honestly say it was an inspiration working alongside the amazing creative people there. The pay was crap and resources were - shall we say - stretched, but hey ho, times were hard. It did look at one time like Ocean was going to absorb them (the Ferrari 456 in the T17 car park belonging to one of the Ocean head honchos was probably worth more than our entire building) which is why it is especially satisfying to see Team17 still around.
    As an example of the sort of creative people who worked there. I remember coming back after the short Christmas break, to be told one of the main 3D artists had left. He'd had a job offer from Digital Domain in Hollywood. The artist, John Allardice, went on to crash the USS Voyager, and got an Emmy co-nomination for it.
    Excellent work Kim!

    • @dougfranckwolf
      @dougfranckwolf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I worked with John Allardice a bit on Stealth at Digital Domain, but the guy from Team 17 who I worked with closely for years was Cris Blyth, a prince of a guy. Super talented, funny, and a good friend. Did you know him?

    • @Zadster
      @Zadster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yep, he worked in the office next door, absolutely top bloke, with Rory McLeish and... er... dammit forgotten the name of the other guy (sorry fella!) had an amazing and slightly scary Amiga setup for Lightwave etc.

    • @dougfranckwolf
      @dougfranckwolf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I worked with Rory a bit as well. Cris and I were on the Lightwave team at DD for years. And didn't Matt Fairclough work there as well? Cris was very proud of his hometown, Hoek. A day out of Hoek is a day wasted, he would tell me on a daily basis. :)

      Well, Mr Team17, Perhaps you can explain how you aquired a time-machine that anabled you to get Benedict Cumberbatch to pose for the picture at 33:43 ? EDIT, I mean the one of the right with the gun, obviously.

    • @Zadster
      @Zadster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm I remember a couple of Matts, not sure what either of their surnames were though. Cris was certainly passionate about Ho'ik, but then with T17 being in Yorkshire that's a perfectly normal thing anyway.

    Team17 were huge on the Amiga back in the day, glad they're still around. It was definitely Worms that saved them, and the decision to put it on so many platforms.
    I remember reading an interview/article in an Amiga mag just as they were leaving the Amiga scene. They seemed pretty resentful about the whole thing, which was of course understandable given the implosion of the platform. They put a lot of resources into AB3D II, but it only sold a tiny number of copies. The Amiga Power dispute probably didn't improve the mood. Then there was the rampart piracy on the Amiga, which became an ever bigger problem as the games market kept shrinking.

    Great video.
    I bought Worms on day one for the Amiga, having seen previews of it on TV. For years it was my favourite game series. I spent time in the Worms community and even based my first internet handle on it which I still use today. I thought Team 17 would only ever continue to produce Worms games, so I was pleased when they started to publish new independent work.

    If any of you fans of Team 17 games loved the music there's also a documentary based on Allister Brimble just search for it on here made by Anarchy Studios. It goes back from when he released music from 17bit days and into his first game on the Amiga as well as covering the album The Amiga Works which was successfully funded on Kickstarter. This is a great video Kim, as always well done!

    I used to play Worms: Armageddon with my dad as a kid on our PS1, and I loved it. I was like 3 when it came out, so it was probably a couple years later. I really liked the little clips they included, too. I also got World Party later, which was fun. Definitely a great series. Later on, I got both 3D Xbox games, as well. I may have to try the original someday

    Well done to Team 17 for keeping the independent name, to many good game studios have been bought out bye big companies and not to long after was closed down. Also good on them for supporting indie developers, great video Kim and I look forwarding to seeing more in the near future.

    My CS teacher taught Alister Brimble. I was well into the Amiga scene at the time and she recognised the name. Sadly, mine was the last year that was taught CS. The RM Nimbus PC's were old and creaking and I suppose it wasn't practical to refresh.

  • @SendyTheEndless

    I know it's not "good game design" but I loved how in the early Alien Breed games you could just get stuck and run out of keys or ammo, you didn't know where to go, etc. It created a feeling of danger that I feel is lacking in the smooth, rounded edges of todays games. I also LOVE the top-down pixel art in those games, especially AB2.

    Thanks for that, I enjoyed that - fair and balanced if a little heavy on the AP thing :-) Also I tried to get Jimmy Nail to voice Superfrog after a bit of a night out with Rico and Andreas in Sweden. Unfortunately he didn't want to do it but we were offered Tim Healey, but it was Jimmy Nail or nothing. I've largely fantastic memories from Team17 especially in the early years at an exciting time for lots of reasons. Seems like 10 minutes ago. Again, thanks for your work on this.

    Paul Kilburn (producer) said Alien Breed Conflict (Dreamcast) had been finished in terms of the design stages and Team 17 had brought Andreas Tadic and Rico Holmes back to build a development team around them to ensure the game was everything both Team 17 and the fans expected.
    Hasbro canned it, as they felt it was too outdated for the platform.
