Solo Stove Mesa, Smoking? Burning Pellet Issues!

  • I try a couple of different methods of burning pellets, pellets are definitely harder to get the hang of than burning wood chunks. I would burn wood chunks if you have them available, here is a link to some on amazon:

I think the pellets are easy to smother the fire with, you can try re lighting the smoke if you have issues. I don't have any issues with wood chunks.

Don’t use a poker because it will disrupt the burning pellets and snuff them out. It is not like a wood fire which has an ember base that will ignite the fuel above. Also, don’t add pellets broadly to the firebox. Instead, add pellets to one quadrant at a time. If part of the fire ring has burned out, add the new pellets to the burned out section - the burning section will serve as a fire starter. If you add pellets while the stove is burning thoroughly, you will snuff out the burn so if you want to add pellets in that case, add pellets to one quadrant only. You need a tool that allows you to add the pellets directionally. Your measuring cup just carpet bombs the firebox and becomes a fire extinguisher. Instead use something like a small metal scoop that focuses the pellet drop.

Top down is what the two guys from solo stove actually demonstrate in their video. I’ve been watching solo stove video reviews and keep seeing people start pellets from underneath and I’m like that’s not how this works according to Solo. I just got mine for Christmas and I’m trying it right now for the first time. This little thing is awesome. Saw one video where a guy trimmed down a tomato planter to about 15” (upside down) and bent the prongs inward a few inches and put a dollar store pizza pan on top as a heat deflection to provide more heat to your table. So far my first batch of pellets (about 2 cups) has been burning strong for about 15 minutes. No “regerts” on this thing.

@@justbill awesome! I didn’t realize it was the same person 🤪😂 I’ve been watching quite a few videos. After about 25 minutes I added 1/2 cup more pellets and ot went for another 10 minutes roughly. Still cherry red but no flame right now. You’re going to cost Solo thousands with your deflection plate idea! I’m sure they’ll be making one and charging $30-$40 for it. I’ll be making yours. I mean it’s 24 here and this little stove did well without but I’m sure with it being in place I’d be a bit warmer. Thanks for that idea. Merry Christmas!🎄🎁

Got to keep on it. Adding here an there as it burns. Just some. It’ll slow the flame down some but if you wait to long it’ll snuff it out.
Another thing works great Incase. Having one of them can handheld chef torches. Lights by the click of a button. If it snuffs out. Use the little torch blow some flame on the pellets for 5-10 seconds tops.
Just enough to get a small sustainable burn on them. Same would be with wood chips an all that.
It’s like rushing the pellets up to a combustion temp faster. Plus when/if the torch is used. It’s blowing the gas with oxygen into it. It won’t have much of any smoke when doing that getting it back up to running itself.

I cut a disc of #5 stainless steel screen and placed it on top of the factory installed grate and ditched the pellet adapter. I now get 40 - 45 minutes of burn time. Light the top of the pellets. I basically copied what Solo did with the Mesa plus.

Something else that works grear is if you have a little air blower to stoke it with by blowing additional air into the little inlet holes on the bottom. Feeds the flame. Makes it rise and ignite the smoke like you did in the beginning. Not sure which of those two options is the better. I suppose it’s situational.

I've been using a gasifier camp stove for several years on outings. I want to make it clear it's not a solo stove, it's a camp stove. I also have not used wood pellets but I have used wood chips regularly when available.
Bottom up burn works fine for twigs and sticks in my experience. I've never had a problem doing it with them. However for wood chips I always done a top down burn, that is I always have after trying a bottom up burn failed on the first attempt with chips.
I do have a source of fine wood chips so they are not that much bigger than pellets. But even though I'm using a different stove, it seams like the principle should remain the same for the solo stove too.
Chips, and pellets will pack more closely together as they are smaller than wood chunks. That would logically restrict air flow in a bottom up burn. It would smother the fire.
I might just be rationalizing my observations, but I know top down burns work and it does seam logical to me.

I’ve had the smoke problem happen to me yesterday when I first used it. I added pellets and the thing was like a smoke bomb. No one wanted to be around it. Thanks for the tips i will try it out. Once I use up my pellets I’ll try the wood chunks.

I've experimented with an aftermarket flat plate pellet adapter. With a top-down fire, you don't need that big middle dome feature taking up space. Without a support plate, the pellets fall down below the wire grate. Burning it like that, the air flow was not as smooth as the normal rocket-nozzle look when it's "gassified" the fuel properly. I think the pellet plate maintains an airspace below the fuel bed, letting air move evenly up through it.
It worked, sort of, without the pellet plate. But it is much better with it. I greatly prefer the flat plate. It's a bit of a mystery to me why Solo doesn't provide that instead of the domed thingy that comes with the Mesa.

These stoves are intended to be light from on top...remove the pellet insert and you'll have a great fire with no smoke...

    • @justbill
      @justbill  ปีที่แล้ว

The original Solo Stove instructions and what currently on the website in written form say to light from the bottom up with the pellet insert. Their original video also showed this method.
They have since changed the video to the top down method but the written instructions still say light from the bottom. I made this video because of the confusion, I agree top down is the way to go. Whether or not to use the pellet adapter is debatable. I think both work well if starting a top down fire. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate you watching. Take care.
