    I found a tip, if you want a size 6 for example, you start wrapping it in the mandril 2 sizes down for you to have the size you want because it will expand as you see. And if it to lsmall then you just stretch it, it's just to get the starting hoop for rings

    Hiya Lady Stardust, yes more questions from me. Can you polish off the gold if you overdo it when shinning with very abrasive tools? would it not be better to mark the cutoff point of a ring for fitting a tube, then move 4mm along the wire, then cut, so the extra wire instead of being in your hand is still on the length of wire and available to use? It gets to me, we cut off the piece and put it in recycling when we could still use it. Using flush-cut cutters would help with cleaning up the ends prior to soldering. Less filing to do. Steve...

      My pleasure! :)) I hope you enjoyed this video. I never done this with chunkier pieces, mainly because gold fill isn't ideal to solder and might tarnish over time. So if I do any soldering, it's usually just a little bit, like these rings

    Can you please do an update to this video, working with gold filled? I know it’s been a few years, and I’m sure you have learned more ways to perfect it. Thank you.

    I love these videos. I am currently on my own jewellery making journey and wanted to know if anyone has any advice or recommendations regarding buying gold filled supplies in the uk ✨

      Hi! So happy you liked this video ❤ It can be tough when starting out and several years ago there weren't many places that offered gold filled supplies in the UK. Now, most of the major suppliers offer gold filled metal, so check out Cooksongold, The Curious Gem, Kernowcraft and Bellore Rashbel. I used to purchase my gold filled sheet from Rashbel and wires, chain and other components from the Curious Gem :)

    After marking the wire length with the sharpie, could you use the saw to make the cuts and avoid the need to file?

    Lovely work! Thank you! I'm wondering about the open ring and the edges of the hammered area. Since the wire is gold-filled, won't the inner metal show through on the edges, and are they likely to tarnish along the edge?

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's very likely! Might require some extra cleaning from time to time

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when I pickled silver with GF, silver got plated by the copper that as inside of the GF metal. It is wise to never contaminate the pickle which you use with silver by any other metal. Hope this helps!

      Yes, there's a seat for it inside! So it sits nice and cozy in there :) Happy you enjoyed watching, thank you!

    I have to try this! I was told in school that gold filled wire couldn’t be soldered

    • @TheArtOfMetalsmithing
      @TheArtOfMetalsmithing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think what they meant was that it shouldn't be, that perhaps it's a rule not to solder it as it's not ideal. I do agree with it, it's best to do cold connections when it comes to gold fill, but at the same time, why not take advantage of other possibilities! Obviously this is not as good or as valuable as the solid gold, but that's precisely why people choose it, it's a more affordable option 😃 And it can be soldered, so no harm if someone want's to play with it :) Definitely give it a go if you want to! And good luck 🌞
