so fun! My wife and I are getting excited over here have just gotten our 20 month old out to howelsen a few times this year. Somehow stumbled my way to your channel and realized you helped us pick out skis as the swap this year right after we moved to town. Thanks for the help, and for all these videos!
Great vid! I've got one kid I'm ready to set loose on the mountain and another that is just beginning her journey. One of the best tips I got was it's better they are crying because you are leaving, than crying because you are staying! Knowing when to call it can be tricky with tired toddlers.
I grew up skiing at Stevens Pass and Snoqualmie. Couple of hours of skiing then munch down fries and strawberry milkshake. Now, I take my toddler skiing in the East coast. Different snow but same fun!
What a cutie! Mine was a bit older but still pretty young. I lucked out and found a really good instructor (and learned that dad wasn't one!) at a small local hill in So. Cal. 25 years + later and she still loves it! Wish I had done the same with surfing but even I hadn't gotten back to surfing at that point. Still she loves surfing too😊.
My parents brought me with them to the ski slopes since I was just learning how to walk. Some of my earliest and best memories are spending days on the ski slope with my snowboarding dad and my skiing grandmother, as well as my skiing mom who occasionally came out with us as well. Skiing is so much more than a sport to give to your children. It is an experience of freedom, connection with the mountain and the people around them, and with the joys of learning that is rare in its power. It lasts. I grew up seeing things that rivaled the beautiful and magical worlds of the stories I read. As a writer and as a person, it instilled in me since I was a child the certainty that there was mystery and majesty in the world. I explored the dense forests of the mountain slopes with my friends or sometimes alone when I broke off from the group and found quiet and strange paths that always took me somewhere new I'd never seen before. I laid down in fresh snow at the very top of the steepest peaks of the Rockies, which were so densely covered in powder I could sink into it and be enveloped as though I were being cradled by the mountain itself in a bed of snow. I remember sometimes I'd just lay like that by myself, at the top of the mountain where I was the only skier, watching the snow and the wind shaking the tree branches around me. If I hadn't been raised into this sport, a part of what formed me would have never found its expression. I would not be the same person I am today, and for that I'm extremely grateful, and hope that more families have the opportunity and joy of raising their children into skiing. My husband will be learning to ski with me during our honeymoon, and we are both so excited to share this together. P.S. The footage of Steamboat specifically brought back some great memories! It was one of the first ski slopes I was brought to, though almost every year growing up we spent at Jackson Hole, my favorite ski mountain and the mountain of my childhood, teenagerhood, and young adult learning, and the Rockies around there was the place where my grandparents and great grandfather would ski.
Just took my 20mo out for her first. Used the edgy-wedgy and had her straddle my ski while I went reverse SP; edgy-wedgy up against my binding. We had a blast for 40 minutes and I packed it in before she got cranked. Hope we keep it up -- thanks for the sweet video.
Wonderful! Yes, parents may get bored, but we instructors love this all day!!! Now we need a video on introducing a date to skiing. You know the kind. Where the guy takes his date to the top and then says, “I’m going to be faster than you so I’ll see you later.”
Well as a date story!! My wife and I were married and our son was about 1 it was the first time we were going to leave him with some friends overnight. We had a good snow for the St. Louis area and my wife said how about we go skiing (I never have) and she has skied all over. So I said let’s go. We get there as she watched me go down the bunny hill a few times and said You got it lets go!! I SAY ARE U SURE? Her response was O YA. So trusting my wife up we go to the top a whopping 320 feet!!! But it looks sketchy to me & off we go I fall countless times at low speed working and sweating my tail off🥵 trying to get up, as she flew down the hill as I’m saying to my self I can’t believe I let her talk me into this!!!! Once I finally get to the bottom I go straight over for a group lesson!!! Boom total wast of time because as u know the group can only progress as fast as the slowest learner!!! So then it was straight to a private lesson because the competitiveness between my wife and I!! That’s when it all changed!!!!!! What a great instructor and he told me it was the best snow they had had in 10yrs!! I was able to ski all over the course, he couldn’t believe it was my first time trying to ski!! We had so much fun what a blessing!! If I would have had that same experience when I was 20 I would have moved to a ski town!!!! I rate it as the most fun sport I have ever done!!! We had our son out as soon as he was old enough. Since my wife has some back and knee issues she can no longer Snow Skiing. But my son and I still go on little man adventures Snow Skiing together as he is getting ready to turn 12. It’s bittersweet not having my wife skiing with us always takes away a little bit of the sparkle!! Thanks for all u do!!
What a joyful video. Wish I'd seen it before teaching my kids to ski, which was something that involved quite a lot of shouting lol. Luckily, in spite of my incompetence, they still love it.
Wow Deb, you made me nostalgic..so unique sharing this with us. Indeed, it starts at that age..with diapers still on🤭, but we did not stop..our memories are gold. That is a good idea to socialize with all of us. You are unique, indeed. Time for a glass of wine..too much nostalgic mood... sighhh ..but happy now, and then 🤗
I'm working on getting my three kids into skiing. My youngest is almost 3. But the PAIN of it..Snow plowing with them fires up my quads and knees more than skiing bumps!! It will be worth it though. I firmly believe ski tripping is the best way for a family to vacation. There isn't even a close second place imo
At a very young age children can adapt rapidly to external forces when they are in a prepared environment. Dynamic skiing can be introduced and effective movement patterns installed. A 4yr old told me about her skiing experience with her dad when she was 2 describing techniques used by world cup ski racers... her dad said she never skied before and had no idea where her experience came from..
Marco Vaschetto I know I am not Deb. But my parents introduced me to skiing at the age of two. And I still love it every day. Btw. I was born end of March...
The same age as my daughter when she began. Begin in doors. Have him walk i doors with ski boots on and put the skis on.. Then go to the lodge for coco. Play in the snow with his boots on. Slide him around by pushing him. Play play.
Deb Armstrong Thanks Deb. Very helpful. We will follow your suggestions. Lastly, what kind of gears should we get? Do you have a reco? Thank you again. You remind me of my ski instructor a lot!
Do I have a reco? Not sure what that is. That nordica boot that I used with my kid was really good. It has a soft cuff. That nordica ski was also very good.
@@marcovaschetto5055 Used equipment can be a good option because they grow out of it so quickly. Rein in your expectations. Some kids get it earlier than others. We are a ski instructor family yet some of the kids didn't take to it until they were four or five and that was with formal lessons.
What do you think of the Hookease tool to help teach beginner skiers? I taught my older child with a harness, but am considering this tool for my younger son - who is now a 1 year-old. Here is a video showing the Hookease th-cam.com/video/u4NwvLQI1Ao/w-d-xo.html
Love it!! Focusing on teaching children the Love of skiing FIRST is such a profound insight. Thank you! 🙏❤️

This was great advice i can't wait to start teaching my daughters how to ski

Great video Deb. This is Arnie Rusten from your old TAS skiing and coaching days! Hope all is well with the family.

How about a vid on how to introduce your spouse to your child skiing?

your videos are great as always. greetings from greece

Yes. Skiing is a fabulious family sport
Nice video Deb
My daughter now is asking me when we are going skiing. She can't ski yet, but she likes hot chocolate when it's cold.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos!! What do you like to see a child be able to do before you introduce poles?
Not poke another person. All the best.
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong I guess I need to take my 15 year old's poles away :) Thanks again for all your videos!!
Thanks

Deb, just curious - how did you learn how to ski? Curious about how you were first exposed to the sport.
it was a family activity. My folks were weekend ski instructors to support the family habit. Grew up skiing in Washington state at Alpental
Hi Deb! This video is amazing. My son is turning two soon. Can I start this winter already? Too early? Lmk your thoughts. Thank you!
