I'm a Brazilian guy...I played soccer junior leagues as a teen, up till I was 16, than I got into jiu jitsu and mma..today I am 31 and I saw a guy playing a game called MLB 24 ROAD TO THE SHOW...than I went and started seeing some real life highlights of real games. Now I just wanna learn this damn game IRL. Goddamit, I would trade my BJJ purple belt for the chance to have known this sport at an early age...

I'm from Canada and it's just innate over here but it's not like super popular among youth or anything it's just common knowledge. Never played an organized game of baseball but became a fan from 2k MLB and MLB The Show when I was a kid . We used to play kickball or California baseball as kids but that's it.

I played ball in highschool, and I loved everything about the game. I played catcher and caught every game for my highschool team except for a single inning where I was moved to right field against a team that kept hitting fly doubles into right field that would get dropped by our younger outfielders, and I caught 3 hitters in a row to save us from complete humiliation in a 10-2 game. I wanted to play pro ball. I wanted to catch in the big game. I loved the teamwork between myself and the pitcher. I loved defending home plate and tagging runners. I loved the deception and trickery of the setup and the catch. And I was pretty good at it. Only one problem. I couldn't hit a ball to save my life. As a catcher I could follow that ball and snag it right in the pocket of my glove 99% of the time, but put a bat in my hand and I couldn't see the ball, where it was going, I couldn't tell when to swing, and I struck out 80% of my at-bats. The rest were either walks or lucky ground singles to left field. My point is, yeah man, you're spot on. Hitting a round ball with a round bat is one of the hardest things to do in sports. But I will forever love the game. It has everything. Luck, skill, strategy, tactics, drama, feuds and complete unpredictability. Baseball is the greatest.

Outstanding explanation... as a brazillian i'm used to easy to understand games like soccer, basketball and handball. That’s kinda like saying, I’ve decided to transition from playing golf to racing cars……..there’s not a whole lot of carry over skills other than basic hand-eye coordination and your ability to run fast for very short periods of time

I was searching for an easy-to explain video to share with foreign friends to introduce them to the game--esp., prior to watching one on TV or (come baseball season) at a ballpark. This is the best that I've come across. Well done--and thanks!
Baseball isn’t as known in Germany as it is in the US, but this strongly reminds me of a game we used to play a lot as children. We called it “Brennball” or “Burning ball”. We had about four to six bases depending on the size of the field, and two teams. In Team A, a player had to kick or throw a ball as far away from the other team as he could, and then start running from base to base. If he manages to get back to his starting position, he scores a point for his team. But Team B also had a base in the middle of the other bases, and you could only run as long as it took them to get the ball back to their base. If you’re between two bases when the ball hits the base of Team B, you have to go back to your starting position and Team B scores a point. So the challenge was essentially to get the ball as far away as possible, to run as fast as possible, and to decide whether to play it safe and stop at a base or risk running to the next one before the other team recovers the ball.

I love the vibe at baseball stadiums (if that makes sense) and hearing it on TV, so I'm excited to learn about it so I actually know what's going on. Covering baseball rules in one video is quite a challenge since the number of rules in the book is daunting. This applies to softball as well. Although this video begins to dip into the weeds of detail at times, it is still a good overview. As a high school softball coach, it is amazing how many talented kids enter our program with weak knowledge and misconception of even the most basic rules. The same is apparently true on the baseball side. This is because parents and youth coaches have themselves learned the rules not by actually reading them, but rather by hearsay, word of mouth, and listening to uninformed sportscasters. Myths and lack of knowledge about even basic rules persist. Examples: Conflating obstruction and interference (one pertains to defense and the other to offense); Thinking that two runners on a base is an automatic out; Not knowing the difference between dead ball and delayed dead ball; Confusing baseline and base path; The difference between player interference and retired player interference; Purpose and use of the running lane; (the list goes on). Diving to specific rules in separate dedicated videos would be an excellent service to both baseball and softball. In doing so, it would be very valuable to craft rules discussions not in terms of MLB rules, but rather rules that are in place for the younger levels. After all, it is highly unlikely that major league players would be using this forum to learn rules. Kids (and parents/coaches) at the younger levels, on the other hand, would. Kids learning the game need to know the rules that pertain to them. A good example... sliding to "break up" a double play in MLB is ok. Doing the same thing at younger levels can get a player ejected. Video discussions of rules are great as long as they are accurate, seek to dispel myths, and are aimed at the audience that is actually at the stage of learning basics. Thanks for making this video!

I am 59 years old and cannot sit a watch MLB anymore. Gimme the LLWS. I've always loved watching top level baseball but as a cricket person (Aus) never fully understood all the rules. I'm gunna watch your other ones now. One thing I didn't see covered was, does a runner, say on 2nd base, have to run when the hitter hits a ball in play?
A runner is only required to run if they are in a force situation. A force situation only happens when the batter hits the ball on the ground and the runner is either (a) on first base or (b) on second or third base and all of the bases behind him are occupied. Force outs can only be recorded against runners in a force situation. The batter is always under a force situation if he hits a fair ground ball.
Great video and clear explanations! Something that confuses me about scoring though is when a run can be scored (or not) when an out is made. I watch baseball and when an out is made, sometimes the hitting team score a run and other times they don't bother to even try, obviously there are rules that dictate this that I don´t understand. Could you post a video on this?
if there are two outs and the ball is hit in the air and caught, or a grounder is hit and thrown for a force out, a run cannot score even if the runner crosses the plate before the out is recorded.
yo i have a question, is there any limit to how much balls a pitcher can pitch at a time? does one pitcher play through the whole game or just one inning?
One thing that made baseball difficult for me to understand when I started watching it, were routine plays. One thing is the rules, i.e. what is and isn't technically legal. Then there's a layer on top of that, of "things that are supposed to happen in certain situations" or "things that are technically legal but no one does", which aren't written in the rule book, but every player understands. For example, the announcers will often just say "RBI single" or "ground ball into double play" the moment the ball leaves the bat, not because of any rule, but because they know that that's what happens in those situations. Untangling the rules from the strategies in order to get a deeper understanding of both is the key.
Rules are a lot, lot to remember when you haven't played it and feels confusing with the quantity of stuff to keep in mind but it's pretty simple to remember while playing
Hi, A few questions about the actions of a catcher. (1) after a fair hit the ball goes into the outfield. Can the catcher remove his protective mask and place it on the third base line? The runners are rounding bases as the ball is thrown back in to the catcher. (2) The ball is thrown wide and hits the catchers’ face mask (he placed on 3rd base line earlier) which stops it from travelling further behind his position at home plate. Is this a form of interference? The catcher then picks up the ball and tags the runner coming home from 3rd. (3) is the runner out? (4) should the umpire call “time” when the ball hit the catchers mask on the 3rd base line and declare the ball ded? (sorry for bad spelling lol)
18:25 As the story goes, Wee Willie Keeler used to bunt a ton of balls foul until he found a pitch he liked. MLB changed the rule in 1895 to the current one to combat this type of strategy. I can't find much truth to this story, but it does fit in the timeline of when he played (1892 - 1910). So, it's possible.
Hi, I am curious as to when high school leagues switched from 9 innings to 7 innings? When I played for my high school team, it was always 9 innings unless the game was called due to weather or mercy rule was called.

yes lots of things happen, but that was a little too specific for this video. Catcher needs to catch it - helps "frame" the ball for the umpire which helps get pitches called as strikes, and must catch or keep the ball in front of him with runners on base - they can advance all they want, so if he doesnt catch it they can run amok
@@egyptianarab5918they also block pitches in the dirt with their bodies to prevent runners advancing on wild pitches. They also throw runners out trying to steal. Catchers have to be the most aware of all current situations. Most managers are ex-catchers. They are also usually the toughest and are typically slow due to all if the squatting

thank you for the video one thing I didn't understand was the fair vs foul balls section at 2:33 and now I understood that by watching the video but I wanted to ask why if you are 0-2 as a batter you get unlimited fouls why doesn't that count as a strike after your 2nd

I played baseball from late childhood though young adult thinking I knew the rules then when I decided I wanted to try being an umpire and I truly saw how deep the rules go lol. That test was stressful

I like how you explain all this. I was reading "watching baseball smarter - zack hample", and sometimes I read the same section for 10 times to be able to understand it. all these things you mentioned in this video are pretty basic, but again it helped me to solidify what I already know, and gave me a more clear understanding about the basics of the game. even tho I know all of them. very good explanations, thanks a lot!

I am 59 years old and cannot sit a watch MLB anymore. Gimme the LLWS. One thing I didn't see covered was, does a runner, say on 2nd base, have to run when the hitter hits a ball in play?

Maybe, I may just not understand the lingo properly.
A runner is only required to run if they are in a force situation. A force situation only happens when the batter hits the ball on the ground and the runner is either (a) on first base or (b) on second or third base and all of the bases behind him are occupied.
Force outs can only be recorded against runners in a force situation. The batter is always under a force situation if he hits a fair ground ball.

Great video and clear explanations! Something that confuses me about scoring though is when a run can be scored (or not) when an out is made. I watch baseball and when an out is made, sometimes the hitting team score a run and other times they don't bother to even try, obviously there are rules that dictate this that I don´t understand. Could you post a video on this?
if there are two outs and the ball is hit in the air and caught, or a grounder is hit and thrown for a force out, a run cannot score even if the runner crosses the plate before the out is recorded.

One thing that made baseball difficult for me to understand when I started watching it, were routine plays. One thing is the rules, i.e. what is and isn't technically legal. Then there's a layer on top of that, of "things that are supposed to happen in certain situations" or "things that are technically legal but no one does", which aren't written in the rule book, but every player understands. For example, the announcers will often just say "RBI single" or "ground ball into double play" the moment the ball leaves the bat, not because of any rule, but because they know that that's what happens in those situations.
Untangling the rules from the strategies in order to get a deeper understanding of both is the key.
Rules are a lot, lot to remember when you haven't played it and feels confusing with the quantity of stuff to keep in mind but it's pretty simple to remember while playing

A few questions about the actions of a catcher.
(1) after a fair hit the ball goes into the outfield. Can the catcher remove his protective mask and place it on the third base line?
The runners are rounding bases as the ball is thrown back in to the catcher.
(2) The ball is thrown wide and hits the catchers’ face mask (he placed on 3rd base line earlier) which stops it from travelling further behind his position at home plate. Is this a form of interference?
The catcher then picks up the ball and tags the runner coming home from 3rd.
(3) is the runner out?
(4) should the umpire call “time” when the ball hit the catchers mask on the 3rd base line and declare the ball ded? (sorry for bad spelling lol)

18:25 As the story goes, Wee Willie Keeler used to bunt a ton of balls foul until he found a pitch he liked. MLB changed the rule in 1895 to the current one to combat this type of strategy. I can't find much truth to this story, but it does fit in the timeline of when he played (1892 - 1910). So, it's possible.

runners can tag up on any fly ball - fair or foul. I didnt go into tagging up in this video, but the answer is yes.
Hi, I am curious as to when high school leagues switched from 9 innings to 7 innings? When I played for my high school team, it was always 9 innings unless the game was called due to weather or mercy rule was called.

Hi! Great video. I was wondering what the point of the catcher is. Does anything happen if the catcher doesn’t catch a pitch? And do they do anything other than just catch it and throw it back to the pitcher?
yes lots of things happen, but that was a little too specific for this video. Catcher needs to catch it - helps "frame" the ball for the umpire which helps get pitches called as strikes, and must catch or keep the ball in front of him with runners on base - they can advance all they want, so if he doesnt catch it they can run amok

@@egyptianarab5918they also block pitches in the dirt with their bodies to prevent runners advancing on wild pitches. They also throw runners out trying to steal. Catchers have to be the most aware of all current situations. Most managers are ex-catchers. They are also usually the toughest and are typically slow due to all if the squatting

Search for "world series" and see what comes up - but just be careful to not call baseball games "matches" - we never use that term. MLB.com also has an archive of free games to watch.
