JD Davis and His Breakout 2019 Season | Stat Stories
JD Davis struggled to get playing time with the Houston Astros in 2018 and when he did get a chance, he strugglied pretty mightily. But after he was traded to the New York Mets prior to 2019, Davis broke out at the plate to become one of the Mets key hitters. So what changed for him?
In this edition of Stat Stories, I take a look at Davis' years in the minor leagues and his status as a prospect. While he performed well, scouts weren't sure if his hitting approach would translate to big league success. And after his first two years in Houston with the Astros, scouts seemed to be right.
JD Davis put up some big numbers with the Mets however. He cut back on strikeouts, pulled the ball less, and did much better against breaking pitches. Combine this with how hard he was hitting the ball, and Davis had a legitimate breakout 2019 season.
There are a few causes for concern though. Can Davis hit pitches up in the zone? And to go along with that, will he be able to increase his launch angle to full utilize his immense raw power?

The Terrific but Brief Career of Brandon Webb | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 20K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Brandon Webb was one of the top starting pitchers in Major League Baseball in the mid 2000s. But after leaving his start early on Opening Day 2009, we never got to see him take a major league mound again. We look back on his 6 years in MLB and see just how good he was in his terrific but brief career. In this video, I recap Brandon Webb's 6 full seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, going from...
How the Arizona Diamondbacks Rebuilt but Stayed Competitive | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 21K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The Arizona Diamondbacks lost Patrick Corbin and AJ Pollock in free agency and traded Paul Goldschmidt and Zack Greinke within the last two years. Despite this, they have remained competitive and have a top farm system. So how did this happen? In this video, I look at how the Diamondbacks attempted to be competitive in 2016 by making some aggressive moves, including trading Dansby Swanson and E...
Do the Texas Rangers Have a Breakout Hitter in Willie Calhoun? (feat. Eephus) | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 13K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Willie Calhoun was acquired by the Texas Rangers in 2017 in exchange for Yu Darvish. As one of the top prospects in the organization, expectations were high for him. It took a few seasons, but in 2019, Calhoun finally showed a glimpse of his massive potential. And there's reason to believe he could be even better in 2020. In this video, I look at Calhoun's 2019 season and how his power numbers ...
A Look at How JD Martinez Broke Out for the Detroit Tigers | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 15K4 ปีที่แล้ว
JD Martinez was released by the Houston Astros prior to the 2014 season. In other words, he was cut from a team that had lost 111 games the previous season. He would join the Detroit Tigers and became a surprise star for a division winning team. So what changed for him? In this video I look at Martinez and his relationship with Craig Wallenbrock and Robert Van Scoyoc. These were two hitting ins...
A Look at the St Louis Cardinals and Their Player Development | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 39K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The St Louis Cardinals have a knack for turning unheralded prospects into Major League contributors. Some call it the Cardinal Way. Others call it Devil Magic. In this video, I look at the players who went under the radar in the draft such as Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, and Matt Adams. These players, along with a handful of others, not only were drafted after the first two rounds, but never at...
A Look Back at the 2012-2014 Oakland Athletics | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 28K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The Oakland Athletics were pretty mediocre for a number of years. They had some promising young pitchers in 2011, and Billy Beane decided to trade those guys away for a number of prospects. It looked like the A's were finally going to rebuild from the ground up. But that's not what happened at all. In this video I look at how the A's somehow won a division title against two heavy weight teams i...

Breaking Down the Miami Marlins Rebuild and Top Prospects | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 37K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The Miami Marlins had a promising core of players around 2015, with an outfield consisting of Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and Marcell Ozuna. But when the team still couldn't make the postseason (and combined with financial trouble and low attendance), new ownership decided to blow up the roster. So let's see how the Marlins are doing a few years later. In this video, I start by looking...
Was Gio Urshela's 2019 Breakout for Real? | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 19K4 ปีที่แล้ว
For years, Gio Urshela was what you would call a 4A player. He did pretty well at triple A in the minors, but wasn't quite good enough to stick around in the majors. But then 2019 happened, and now Urshela is a starter for one of the best teams in baseball. So how did it happen? In this video, I look at just how well Urshela played in 2019, comparing him to fellow Yankees infielders Gleyber Tor...
Breaking Down the Seattle Mariners Rebuild and Top Prospects | Stat Stories
มุมมอง 58K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The 2018 Seattle Mariners were one of the oldest teams in baseball, with very few players being 25 years old or younger. Two years later, the 2020 edition of the team looks to be filled with young talent with more prospects on the way. So how did this quick rebuild happen? In this video, I look at who exactly was on the 2018 and 2020 rosters for the Mariners and compare their ages. I then look ...

Why do Projections Love the 2020 New York Mets? | Stat Stories

Love them or hate them, projections are a big part of baseball, especially right before the season gets under way. For 2020, the projections seem to really like the New York Mets. in a time of boeing and bombardier, it makes no sense not unifying it all under one league with no divisions or conferences, have each team play all of the other team home and away, and the one that wins the most wins the league, then at the end, the league winning team plays against the all-star team made up of the best members of all of the other teams.

Since 2022 only the two best division winners per league advance. The 3rd division winner plays together with league team's 4,5 & 6 in the wild card series. There are 12 teams in the postseason now, 6 for every league, the 2 best division winners advance, the rest plays in the wild card series.

The fact that there are so many teams feeding the mlb shows that baseball could have been a cultural cornerstone the same as soccer in many parts of the world. Would have been amazing to have a relegation system with teams strictly representing their city/town/community rather than franchised system where teams jump around cities.

This video is really good at explaining the system but for anyone seeing this, it's slightly out of date. In 2022, MLB added another wild card team to each league. The only real differences is that now the lowest-seeded division winner partakes in the Wild Card round against this new 6 seed. This round is now also a best-of-3 series. Other than that it's the same.

Cool to see the hype for players who would form the core of a rising Marlins team. Even though Bleday didn’t work out and Sanchez hasn’t played since 2020 bc of weird injuries, Sanchez and Cabrera are solid starters and Chisholm is a star and easily the face of the team

      rank

    • @fullmetaljakey
      @fullmetaljakey ปีที่แล้ว

A seed is basically just a ranking system to determine who goes where in the playoff bracket. The 1st and 2nd seed teams skip the wildcard round and go right to the divisional series. The 3rd 4th 5th and 6th seeds go to the teams that will play in the wildcard round. 1st seed goes to the division winner with the best record in their respective league. This year it was the orioles in the AL and the braves in NL. The 2nd and 3rd seeds go to the remaining division winners in order of win/loss record. For this year in the AL that was Houston with the 2nd seed which also means they get a bye (meaning they skip the wildcard round) and the twins got the 3rd seed. It’s a little confusing because a team like the rays have a better record than both Houston and the twins but since they didn’t win their division they end up getting the 4th seed.
