    Find out how to make the most of your gold by NOT spending it, and set yourself up for a big collection boost!
    This doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy packs, or that there isn't any value in it. It means that the most value you can get from a new set release is to do as many drafts as possible at the start of the release to give your collection a big boost. After you start to get diminishing returns from the drafts, that's when the normal packs and golden packs start to become more valuable to pick up the rares that you haven't managed to find in the draft.

    If you struggle in quick drafts, I would suggest trying a draft helper app. It's not perfect and you won't always agree with it,, but it helps to weed out bad cards and it also helps to make a deck base. You can then tweak it a little (splash colors or change some creatures you think that would be useful). It helped me alot get wins with drafts I thought I was going to do very poorly.

    I can't agree that spending gems on drafts is better value than spending gold. I think I know what You mean - 5000 gold for quick draft would be 1000 gems instead of 750.
    But in my opinion, the fact that drafting is one of few ways to turn gold into gems, makes it better value. At least for someone like me, who doesn't want to spend real money to buy those gems :)
    So my goal during each set is to save about 5500 gems and at least one draft token to be able to spend it on mastery pass, one sealed event and one premium draft when the new set comes in. Been doing it since Guilds of Ravnica and it works fine with me playing few evenings a week. Good job with the video!

      standard and historic events seem like decent ways to get gems as well, even more so if you can reliably get 4+ wins (which isn't that hard if you play decently competitive decks, for me its azorius soldiers for standard and selesnya enchantments with blue splash for historic that allow enough wins to make it good enough)
      Edit: okkey did the math, if you win 4 games you get a booster and 300 gems, which turns into around 1500 gold into 300 gems... That said, 4 wins means that you really have to win a lot to make that work. That said, if you can get some 7 win runs every now and then to get those tokens... still one needs to win a lot for that to be good strategy...

    I quick drafted 25k new capenna and 25k dominaria after watching yt videos on how you can get more than 3 rares each draft since it´s against bots and sometimes they just pass the rares and you just have to pick them, I even saw the gameplay and it was true(those videos where from strixhaven and Forgotten relams), but I personally think it´s not true anymoe in the latest sets i drafted and bots raerly pass rares or mythics(even saw some posts on Reddit about people complaining about the same thing).
    Spending 10k in boosters gets you: 10 rares , 1 golden pack with 6 rares and 11 points in the wildcard slot wich is 1.9 wildcards. Total 16 rares and 1.9 wildcards. 10k in quick drafts with 0 wins gets you: 8 rares 100 gems 2 oints in wildcard porogress. with 4 wins: 8 rares 450 gems 2 points wc progress.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right about the guaranteed value of buying packs with the golden pack bonus, it's much better now than it used to be.
      If you only get 4 rares per quick draft, with no wins, then it's definitely better to just go for the packs instead, but I haven't found it to be quite that bad.
      In my last two quick drafts, I picked 8 and 5 rares/mythics and won 650 gems and the 2 reward packs.
      That's 15.3 rares, and almost enough gems to pay for another draft in itself (or worth roughly another 6 rares if spent on packs).
      It depends very much on how many matches you are able to win, and if you are able to pay for the draft in gems, which is also effectively a 25% discount that makes a big difference too.

    This is what I've been doing as a f2p player :
    Save 65k gold for the new set. This means I have about 75k when the quick drafts come around.
    As soon as the set come out, do 1 or 2 sealed events, depending on results. You wanna make sure you use under 2k gems for this.
    Spend 5k gold in jump in! When the sets get inserted into the packs.
    When the quick drafts come, you are in a deficit of -2k gems from this strategy and you have about 70k gold.
    Proceed to do quick drafts until you hit gold. This will usually take 8 quick drafts. This will usually give you around 2500 gems.
    You are now positive in gems, about +500, and have around 30k gold provided it took you 10 days to do all these drafts.
    Wait for the next season, don't open up anything. Don't buy anything. Just farm gold with your last jump in pack. By this time you will have enough gold to do another round of 8 drafts or so to hit gold rank.
    When this is done, you should be positive in gems about +3000, and have done 1 to 2 sealed events, 5 jump ins, and have almost no gold remaining.
    Buy the mastery pass, putting the strategy at -400 gems total. The mastery pass will give you 1200 gems back so you're still positive around 800 gems.
    When the last season rolls over, do a single premier draft with the token granted by the mastery pass.
    Spend gold on packs in increments of 10k to get the golden packs with the remaining gold until you buy around 30 then save up for the new set.
    Doing this I've achieved 70% rare completion almost every set spending nothing and actually building gems slowly over time.

      @@zjaranyjoe7456If you have good results in any format, constructed or sealed, take some time off to do the events you are more confident. Construct costs 2500 for Bo1 and 5000 for Bo3, drafts cost 5000 for the quick and 10000 for the premiere. Is not a good strategy to pay events with gold UNLESS you don't have the gems to pay for them. Any event will give you 25-50 gems just for signing, with 0 victories. 4 or 5 wins, depending on the event, and with your gold entry fee you win enough gems to re-enter the event. If you have consistent wins, pay with the gems and make your gems back with interest, if not, go back to farm gold, pay the events with it and maximize your gems. With average results on draft you can even afford a mastery pass in like, one month.

    I got more rares in BRO doing premier drafts (averaged 5-6) than quick drafts (averaged 2-3). Of course cost is different...but just a bit that I never really got 5-6 rares during quick draft (due to them changing the draft algorithm a while back)

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting. With Quick Drafts you should at least get 3 rares from the packs that you open in the draft, plus there's at least another 1 from the reward pack. Do you happen to have any links that talk about the draft algorithm changing? I'd love to look into that more.

    • @StefanoPrezioso
      @StefanoPrezioso ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll always have pick one on each of the three packs, so if you're only getting 2 rares, that's because your third is a mythic, or you're intentionally deciding to skip a rare or mythic (maybe you already have a full play set, or maybe you are focusing on building the best deck you can through the draft). So if you want to rare draft, you should be able to get at least 3, even in quick draft. In my recent quick draft experience, I've definitely noticed some rares and in some cases a mythic or two floating around well after picks 1 or 2 for a pack.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gameschooldadMTG Yeah, you've absolutely convinced me that Quick Draft is the right way to go for building out a new set collection. I'm considering tracking percentages of my collection vs number of net new picks, duplicates building towards full play set, and redundant copies past a full play set for each quick draft I do. Especially using an overlay tool, it's easy to identify which cards are net new to you in your collection, which are duplicates towards play set, and which are redundant copies, which may help drive the value of the quick draft as you get closer to that tipping point of starting to open packs. The economy piece of all of this is super interesting to me. Thanks for all the great content thus far!

    Thank you Martin! I’m fairly new to MTGA and I have 8500 gold and 1000 gems at the moment. Even though I’m planning to go the f2p route, I could not pass the opportunity to buy the welcome bundle for $5. I also got really lucky and went 7-2 on my very first draft, 3-3 on my second and 1-3 last one I did. So I had enough to buy the mastery pass for brothers war and still have left over gems. I was ready to call it quits on limited as, even when winning, I did not enjoy it as much as constructed.
    I was planning to follow your advise from the other video and just stick to buying packs with gold and play constructed but maybe I will give limited another chance and save 50 to 60 k gold for phyrexia and do the 10 drafts or so. Maybe I’ll be lucky and gather enough to buy the mastery pass as I only need 2300 more gems.
    It may sound obvious, but do you recommend choosing different colors every time you draft?

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, getting 7 wins on your first draft is definitely a good start! I think quite often drafting can seem harder for newer players, but people tend to enjoy it more when they get more practice at it. I'll be documenting my Phyrexia quick draft events and maybe that will also be useful to watch. If you really don't enjoy drafting, then just get enough gems for the mastery pass if you can and stop there if you want to.
      I don't have a specific rule for choosing different colours every time I draft. If I'm trying to fill out a collection, then it would make sense to try to pick different ones to fill them each out more, but my main strategy will be to pick the rares first and build the best deck I can out of everything else, whatever colour they happen to be.

    Returning to MTGA after a bit and appreciating your videos Martin, Thank You. How does the Jump In event fit into new set card collection? I've found it very useful as I'm catching up on BRO late. I'm not familiar with the timing of it compared to the new set release and the assoc. quick draft window. • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! When you do the jump in event, one of the three initial options will always be a new one. So when the new set releases, there will likely be 10 new packets to choose from, as there was for DMU and BRO. I'd recommend entering them enough times so that you pick up at least one copy of every packet at some point.

      Getting an average of 3 wins in a quick draft isn't terrible at all actually. Buying packs instead of doing quick drafts probably isn't that much different. I'd recommend keep doing drafts to start with as much as you want to, and then just buy packs after that. Then the packs will benefit from duplicate protection when you open them.

    Great videos. I've seen similar but its hard to find them again because they are usually in a stream with their deck plays. Question I have is, "what do you do in the first two weeks of the set?"
    I usually by the pre-order bundles and then I am sitting there trying not to open the 50 packs until after I've done Quick Draft. But that often means I'm four weeks into a set before I can build Standard competitive decks. I usually have enough wild cards that I can cobble together one standard deck but I find I really dislike the first few weeks of a set because I'm still struggling to get new rares and so I almost stop playing in the first two weeks of a new set. Best way to boost your collection? Challenge accepted. Let's do some math.
    Let's say we'll spend the same amount of gold you recommended: 50k.
    45k to buy a 45 booster pack including 1 rare+ card and cosmetics. 5k to buy last 5 boosters. 50k spent. In addition we'll receive 5 golden boosters - for each 10 boosters bought.
    Now let's open them. We'll receive 50 rares+ from regular boosters and 24 rares+ & 6 guaranteed mythics from golden boosters.
    By opening those 56 boosters we'll also receive 9 wildcards where least one will be mythic.
    Let's calculate: 1+50+24=75 rares+ and 8 wildcards, 6 mythics and 1 wildcard.
    Pros: 90 total rares/mythics instantly after set release, duplicate protection. No need to wait for 2 weeks to start filling your collection.
    Cons: You'll not enjoy playing lot of drafts.
    About gaining experience playing new cards: it's not the same as an experience in constructed. Draft have own meta and cards that will be good in draft may see no good plays in standard and vice versa.

    Did you not make a video last week saying that buying packs is now better than quick drafting?

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It depends on a few things, so I'll try my best to clear that up.
      Quick Drafting will get you more cards for the cost either 1) When you have a small collection and won't encounter too much duplication, and 2) When you're really good at drafting and winning those high gem rewards.
      But when you start to encounter that duplication, especially for rare/mythic cards in drafting (getting 20-40 gems instead of a new card), then the introduction of the golden packs last year now makes buying the most recent packs much more viable for completing your collection. This is mostly because of the duplicate protection that will guarantee you new cards or wildcards every time you open a pack.
      So essentially, quick drafting is better at the beginning of a set (or if you're great at drafting), and buying standard packs with the golden pack bonus is better towards the end of a set (or if you're terrible at drafting or just don't enjoy it).
      When you have a new set release coming up, it's a great idea to save up the gold to do as many quick drafts as possible during that 2-week window to get the most value as early as possible.
      I hope that all makes sense, it can be a little confusing!

What are you thoughts on this. The deck I been using has been pretty good but has it's problems. Right now I am stuck in Platinum ranks. It is a very simple black mono deck that I pray that nobody has allot of enchantments, it is all common and rare cards with I think one mythic card or legendary card. I want a bunch of silver and gold cards, to held construct more decks.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't any extra value in buying the 90 pack bundle compared to buying 1 pack at a time. The best place to spend your 26k gold depends on what you like more. If you enjoy playing limited, then quick drafts will likely get you the most variety of cards for the cost. If you don't want to play limited, then just buying most recent packs might be the best option for you to give you new cards and important wildcards to craft the specific cards that you like the look of. If you have a lot of Brothers War cards already, then it might be worth more to save up your gold to spend on Phyrexia packs instead.
      Also, regarding rank, there isn't much enconomic incentive to push past Platinum, unless you want to get higher up just for the sake of it. I often stop at Platinum and play different game types after that for some variety.

    Great advice! I was playing quests and currently am at around 77k waiting to get to 90k to buy the big bunch of packs for the new set, is that as cost effective as the quick drafts regarding wild cards too? Should I spend money for the mastery pass? I never got to 3k gems (or maybe I did and spent them on some useless thing a wild back)

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mastery pass is really valuable, so I'd recommend getting it one way or another. If you do have money to spend, then you can get the most value from the $5 and $15 offers in the store. They'll give you enough gems to buy the mastery pass. Buying packs is pretty close to quick drafts for card collection value for the average player, so if you'd rather get lots of new cards really quickly, you'll do pretty well with opening 90 packs.

    hi! stupid noob question: is the release date of new sets in arena the same as "on paper"? the next set is supposed to drop on the 23rd of april, which is only about two months after the release of the current set or 1.5 months from now.
    im asking, because earning xp for the mastery pass is highly restricted and buying a pass without the ability to finish it doesnt make any sense to me.. or am i wrong? thanks!

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      Phyrexia was released on 10th Feb on paper, but on 7th Feb on Arena. The dates follow each other, but aren't exactly the same. Machine will be released on 21st April on paper, and 18th April on Arena (I believe). That's only a window of 10 weeks to complete the Mastery Pass for Phyrexia. That does make it a little harder to get all the levels you want, but still not impossible at all. It just depends on when you started and if you've missed many days.

      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrNukedawhales you're right that it's definitely very close for this set because it's only 10 weeks until it resets. It is possible to get 80 levels with about 2-3 wins per day on average and completing all the daily quests. Even if you don't get right to the end, you'll still have gained the vast majority of the rewards if you get to around level 70, just missing out on a few potential new cards.

    hello,
    I wanted to know if it is better to use your gold to make quikdrafts and convert them into gems to then buy packs or is it better to keep the gold for the packs and use the gems for the drafts?
    Thanks for your videos.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      My plan is to spend all the gold you can on quick drafts, until you see diminishing returns in the cards that you pick or until the quick draft set changes, then concentrate on buying packs when you need to rely on the duplicate protection to help you complete the set faster. I'd only use gems on quick drafts and making sure you have the mastery pass unlocked, not for buying packs.

      @brunovuilmet3639 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gameschooldadMTG On your advice I took the pre-order pass. This is my only purchase in the game. I understand that you have to wait to have almost all the communs by doing quikdrafts before starting to open and buy packs. Gems are less profitable for packs than for drafts.

    So, as a brand new player (As in i am downloading the game as I type this.) should I bother to spend any gold currently or start saving up for the new set? I know you practically answer the question in this video but I'm not sure if that should apply to me as I am literally just now starting out. Perhaps I just picked a bad time to start playing? Appreciate the advice and help.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was starting out today, I don't think I would save up my gold, I would do Jump In events to start with to make it much easier to get your daily wins and unlock all the starter decks. The Jump In events will give you lots of cards for your 1,000 gold entry fee, including cards from all Standard legal sets, which is really nice. The next priority is to get enough gems for the mastery pass, so I would recommend doing some Quick Drafts at some point just for the gems, it doesn't matter which set you're drafting to start with. You'll have the $5 and $15 bundles in the store that are the best value of anything on Arena, so if you want to spend any money on the game, they would give you a huge boost too. I hope that helps :)

      Even if you don't win the drafts, you'll get 50 gems per draft and 1.2 reward packs on average from completing the event, as well as all the rares that you're able to pick up. It still works out worth the effort, but if you can win a good amount of games along the way, it gets even better.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Golden packs came out with the Brothers War, so we haven't had a new set release since they've been around, which means we don't actually know what will happen with the progress. I don't think it will reset, I'm hoping that it will just stay at the same level, but then will only progress when we buy Phyrexia packs. If you want to play it really safe, you could make sure you get to 10/10 before the release date, just in case.

      For beginners I would definitely recommend Jump In events. They only cost 1,000 gold and you only pay when you select new cards, so you could just pay 1,000 once to get a deck that you can use in the Jump In events and get your daily wins much easier than if you played standard or ranked games. Jump In is also really good for building up your collection to start with, especially for people who aren't as good at draft events.

    10 Quick draft = 5 premium drafts
    getting 2-4k gems from 50k gold is really low
    even modest skill levels can pull off 3 wins/3losses average in premium, which would be 5k gems rather than 2-4. And that's not even counting when you open a Siege Veteran and see it every opener, and walk away with ~2k gems (and 6 packs)from 1 event
    The pack payout on Quick draft is almost nothing.
    other players tend to pass off-color Rares in premium draft, so you're getting a lot more of them to get you to a complete set faster
    a complete set is such a boon to your F2P grind
    I only Quick draft if my rating is borderline, and it's the end of the month already; and I need 2-3 more wins to get to the next reward rank; ie. Platinum.
    Diamond & above are not entry level recommended.
    I would Quick draft if I managed a complete set of it.
    Gold & Platinum are good thresholds for rating to get you freebies every month

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're probably better at draft events than the average player if you're doing so well in premier drafts. The gem rewards for quick drafts are definitely lower, but the benefit is that you get to draft twice as many cards compared to doing premier drafts, because the entry fee is half as much.

      So... save that gold

    It annoyed me a bit that the math was not apparent in the video. So I did it myself. The Estimated return value of a Quick Draft is : 347.264 gems + 4.09 packs(3 of wich are the draft packs) wich totals to a price of 98.458 gems per pack. In Traditional Draft the Estimated return value is : 819.531 gems + 5.5 packs(3 of wich are draft packs) wich totals to a price of 123.72 gems per pack. So in conclusion if your aim is to get as many gems as possible to buy the mastery pass play TD. If your aim is a collection play QD.

    • @gameschooldadMTG
      @gameschooldadMTG  ปีที่แล้ว

      The math can get a bit complicated, especially since the value of quick drafts depends entirely on how many games you can win from each event. Also, the draft packs that you pick from in the event are different to the packs you win as event rewards. I agree with you that quick draft is probably the best option for building an initial collection and other drafts are better for the gem returns in general :)

Why should I spend hours and hours of my scarce spare time playing a format in which I suck or I simply hate?
